Natives vs.
Thomas Jefferson, the former US
president, believed that America’s future
depended on expanding westward. During the
westward expansion, many Native Americans
were forcibly removed from their homeland. On
May 28, 1830, a law called the “Indian Removal
Act” was signed. This allowed the president to
give unsettled land, west of the Mississippi, in
exchange for Indian land within state borders.
Some of the tribes went peacefully, but many
resisted. Between 1838 and 1839 the Cherokee
tribe was forcibly re-moved from there home
land which killed 4,000 Cherokees. This forced
relocation became known as the “Trail of Tears.”

Andrew Jackson vs. John Quincy Adams
Until 1824 there was only one political party in the
United States, the parties name was the Jefferson
Republicans. When it was time for a new
presidential election in 1828 the party split into two.
The final candidates in the 1828 election were John
Quincy Adams, supported by the National
Republicans and Andrew Jackson, supported by
the Democratic Republicans. Also known as
Democrats. The democrats favored states’ rights
and mistrusted a strong central government, while
Nation Republicans wanted a strong central
government. Andrew Jackson and John Quincy
Adams were two very different people. John
Quincy Adams was the highly-educated son of the
second president of the United States and he
traveled all over as a diplomat. On the other hand,
Andrew Jackson was an orphan and born into
poverty. He served as a major general in the War of
1812. Lastly Historians consider the 1828 election as
one of the more negative elections in US history
because of all the slander and personal attacks
about one another.

Republic of Texas

1836 Texans unanimously declare their independence.
The Battle of the Alamo was fought between
February 23 – March 6
1836-The Specie Circular was issued to restrain
excessive land speculation and curtail the enormous
growth of paper money in circulation
19th Century Wars
There were very many important wars in the United States
during the 1800’s that impacted our modern nation today
such as the civil war, Mexican American war, and the war
of 1812. The war of 1812 first came about when the United
Kingdom was engaged in a war against France and the
armies of Napoleon. The UK placed trade restrictions on
the US, the UK navy also captured U.S. trade vessels
and forced the sailors to join the Royal Navy. The United
States and the United Kingdom fought each other until
they both signed a peace treaty called the “Treaty of
Ghent” on December 24th, 1814. Thirty-one years later,
the Mexican-American, war also known as the battle of
Alamo, erupted between the US and Mexico from 1846 to
1848. The war was mainly about the territory of Texas.
These major wars were about the United States fighting
other nations but the American Civil War between 1861 and
1865 was a war fought between the southern and northern
states of the US. The south wanted to become their own
country while the north wanted to stay as one united
country. The American Civil war was the deadliest war in
US history with 600,000 soldiers dying. To conclude,
these wars were very important in American history
because of how they shaped our nation today.
