You’re in a café when a friend comes in with someone you don’t know. The person sits down next to you, and you start
talking.
These first moments are very important. We see a lot of things when we meet new people - their face and hair, their
clothes and how they walk. And when we start talking, we notice eye contact, facial expressions, body language and
how they speak. From these first impressions, we imagine the person’s personality.
The surprising thing is that we make our decision very quickly. In about 40 milliseconds we interpret the expression on
a person’s face. Some psychologists think that we decide in just two seconds.
But be careful! Our first impressions aren’t always right, and a negative opinion is difficult to change later. For that
reason, it’s important not to form an opinion about a person before you know them really well.
