Report of Amarnath Donepudi’s Social Service, 2016-17

1 Introduction:

This document is a synopsis of the work I have done as a YFS volunteer at Zilla Parishad High
School, Kothaguda and Tuitions that run at my home in the academic year of 2016-17.

2 About Me:

I am Amarnath Donepudi, working in IT as software professional. I always had a strong urge to

do something for the society that has given me all I have. Though I had the conviction to do
something, I did not have a means. When I got associated with Youth For Seva (YFS), Hydera-
bad, I got the right platform through which I could contribute my bit.

YFS is a non-profit organization, doing great work for society, education, and environment. I
registered with YFS as a volunteer in 2011. The YFS team connected me to a couple of under-
privileged schools in the area. There was a dire need of academic and motivational coaching in
these schools. I began my activities with taking classes for environmental issues and personality
development for students of class 7th at Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS), Kothaguda and those
of class 4th at IzzatNagar Primary School. I started with going only on Saturdays. I gradually in-
creased my visits to the schools and began working dedicatedly for the improvement of the
students.

Since that time, I have been teaching the children of ZPHS. There have been visible results,
which motivate me to keep doing what I am doing. The children lovingly call me Bhaiya, and
shower lots of love. This emotional bond further gives me the energy and enthusiasm to work
harder.

I had many ups and downs & faced great challenges at every step in all these years. I had to
convince the school authorities & students’ parents for a lot of things like allowing me to take
classes and tuitions. Even in my personal life and professional life, I had to struggle a lot to
manage my responsibilities along with my social service. The only thing that kept me moving is
the urge inside me to serve my mother land with Patience, Dedication and a feeling of being
responsible.

With great satisfaction and pleasure, I wish to share that I have completed 6 years of social
service.

3 Supporters:

I will always be grateful to Youth For Seva, Hyderabad, Wells Fargo Indian Solutions and my
Friends (Naveen, Mike, Krishna, Indumathi) for their continued support. Without their constant
guidance and cooperation, none of it could have been possible.

4 Contribution (List of Seva Work):

4.1 School Activities

The school program has been designed from the field experience of interacting with students
and understanding their problems and behavior. This program is also based on inputs from cur-
riculum designed my T.S government and is completely in alignment with the CCE model. The
activities that I have been conducting in the school are centered around the following factors of
a student’s life:

✓ Personality development: Behavior, Self-confidence, Society oriented

✓ Education
✓ Mental-Strength
✓ Discipline
✓ Team building
✓ Indoor/Outdoor games
✓ Career-Guidance
✓ Facing life via Group Shows
✓ Students Home Visits (Out of school program)

Every Saturday, post-lunch I conduct activities from any of the categories mentioned above.
Students are intimated 1 week in advance for next week’s activities so that they can prepare
themselves.

Main points of this program are:

• All the students are divided into groups comprising 7-10 students.
• The primary goal of this program being encouraging participation of students, the fore-
most rule of every activity is that each group members has to participate in every task or
else they lose points.
• Each task has points and based on group’s performance, points are awarded.
• After every 7 activities, one group is declared winner which holds the trophy. Winning
team gets prizes that they want, provided the prize items are useful to them in educa-
tion or personal life.
• The legacy of the trophy goes on with different kinds of activities and task varying from
month to month keeping the class active, fun, interesting.
• Encouraging and counselling students to take part in all tasks.
• Special attention to students who are weak in performance.
• Involving teachers, well-wishers as judges and advisers.

education, discipline, behavior, personality development areas as mentioned inline. Apart from
it I got good feedback from teachers and parents.

Some key results as shared by students/parents/teachers:

• All the students of the class are confident about speaking in front of an audience. They
say, “Anna I never thought that I can talk in front of everyone, but now I can.”
• Whole hearted participation of students in all activities
• Increased confidence level of students
• Increased interest in education, not just of students, but also of their parents.
• Increase in attendance
• Increased inquisitiveness
• Courage to win over fears like stage fright, etc.
• More disciplined

4.2 Tuitions

Most of the students in the government schools come from lower class back-
grounds. The environment at their homes is generally not very conducive for studies. Also, the
guardians of such children are usually not capable enough to guide their children for their stud-
ies. Such parents usually have a myopic view towards education. The only motivation for
most of them to send their children to school was the Mid-day meal, till the children are too
young for employment.

As I realized this problem, I understood that it is not only the students who need to be taught,
but also their parents need to be awakened. I planned to establish a rapport with the parents
first, so that I could explain to them the value of education.

To reach their homes, I started an initiative called “Gift a Tree on Birthday”, where in I noted
down the birthdays of all the children, and visited their homes on their birthdays and gifted a
tree as a birthday present. This was our entry point to student’s homes. After that, I started
talking to the parents about the value of education.

After continuing it for 1 year I felt that I need to take care of their education also via tuitions
after school hours. But again the parents were worried about their daughters’ safety. Hence I
decided to teach them and the question made me think why I can’t teach them after my office
hours, so the tuitions started in Sep-2012 for Kothaguda kids who are in 8th class at that time. I

was able to convince most of the families for tuitions from 6:15 to 8:30 PM every day. After tui-
tion I use to drop few girls at their home.

This program has helped us in creating awareness about education, reduce drop outs and ca-
reer-guidance to students.

I have been taking tuitions every day for government school and government college students
only for the last 4yrs. All our 1st batch students have been observed for higher education by PSS
Trust. Currently we are serving school students which is our 2nd batch.

4.2.1 Tuition Highlights

The major highlights of tuition are:

• Teaching all the subjects for school/college students

• Teaching basics in Telugu, Hindi, English and Math’s for school students for first year
and then starting with subjects from 9th class onwards
• Communication skills for both college and school students
• Career guidance for all students
• One-on-one attention given to all students

4.3 Home Visits- what was done, why was it done, impact

One very critical and major element of my programs is home visits which helps me to keep in
touch with students’ parents and educate them about the importance of academic education
of their children. I visit to every tuition student’s home once in a month.

4.3.1 Impact:

The impact of home visits which we were able to achieve are:

• Educating parents & students on imp of education

• Stopping school dropouts
• Stopping early girl child marriages
• Building rapo with parents

4.4 Career Counselling

Apart from School, Tuitions and Home-Visits I am also doing Career guidance and One-on-
One to students in school. These students are from school level with the age range of 12 – 15.
The main motive to do this is because of the student’s background where parents are ill-
iterate, daily wage labors with no awareness on education and finance management.

5 Future Plans

I will continue our programs in school with personality development as main motive. Tuitions
I will continue with school and planning to prepare our 2nd batch school students of 9th
standard (currently 6 regular) for public exams in next 2 years. All other programs like home
visits, career-guidance & one-on-one will continue.

I also want to make our program stronger with less students & high quality and stressing
more on Character building rather than only education. I am planning to train our students to
crack free seats in engineering and prepare for Government jobs like IES (Indian Engineering
Services), DRDO, ISRO & Bank POs.

I also plan to collaborate with couple of NGOs where our service will have impact.
