0 DESIGN CRITERIA
Code of Practice is a document that provides recommendations for the design and construction of
structure. It contains detailed requirements regarding loads, stresses, strengths, design formulae
and methods on achieving the required performance of completed structures.
On this project, we have used design procedures Eurocode (EC, published by European
Committee for Standardization.
EN 1990: Eurocode – Basis of structural design
EN 1991: Eurocode – Actions on structures
However, MS EN 1990 establishes the principles and requirements for safety, serviceability and
durability of structures.
6.1 Design working life
The design working life is term used for which structure or part of it is to be used for its intended
purpose with anticipated maintenance without major repair being necessary. The design working
life as presented in The Malaysian National Annex to Eurocode for this project are shown in
Table 1.

6.2 Exposure condition
Exposure conditions are chemical and physical conditions in which the structure is exposed. In
accordance to MS EN 1991-1-1, Table 2 have shown the classification of exposure conditions.
Class designation Description of the Informative examples where
environment exposure classes may occur
XC1 Dry or permanently wet Concrete inside building with
low air humidity.

submerged in water.

6.3 Actions
1. Characteristic permanent action, Gk
The self-weight of structure, weight of finishes, ceilings and services at which the
variation in magnitude with time is negligible. The permanent actions on this project are
given in Table 3.
