Introduction (How will you engage and motivate the students?)
- Introduce the topic of the impact of language on culture – the sociological answer of
15 MIN “How Do We Communicate?”
- Students will get into groups of 3 or 4 and write, on chart paper, as many slang words
they know with their meanings
- After 5 to 10 minutes, students, who volunteer, will share their words and meanings
Lesson Steps (Describe the sequence of the lesson.)
- After students present some of their words, transition into the discussion about how
sociologists have studied how societies or culture influenced by language – example,
Inuit First Nations have a variety of terms for snow and androcentric language
- Describe how language defines a cultural group and how it can be considered the
“soul” of a culture – with examples
- Communicate how technology effects language
40 MIN - Explain two new languages that have emerged in the last century that are dialects of
English with examples and videos – Spanglish and Ebonics
- Describe how media uses communication to socialize society – to promotes
stereotypes, sexism, racism, heterosexism etc.
o Watch and listen to 4 or 5 current ads and discuss the issues with them
o Critical thinking activity
 Groups of three or four
 Each group is given chart paper, a marker and two advertisements
 They have to write what the advertisements are selling, and what are
the issues surrounding them
Conclusion (How will you wrap-up the lesson?)
- Each group will present their advertisements and critically describe what the issues
20 MIN surrounding each one – questions will be asked throughout presentations to clarify or
refine critique
- The last 5 or 10 minutes will be time to discuss media further or answer questions
concerning the impact of language on culture
