Research has proven that in an emergency people will react without confusion
or panic if they receive a clear, intelligible message. Bells and sounders only give
a warning ~ they do not indicate the nature of the emergency. Phased
evacuation using clear, easily understood pre-recorded messages ensures that
even untrained personnel are evacuated speedily and efficiently.

Let VIGIL2

n a VIGIL2 system all critical signal paths from the Fire Officer’s microphone, through
the amplifiers to the end of the loudspeaker lines, are monitored. Battery backup comes
as standard. The power supply and internal battery charger are also fully monitored.

and use it This ensures that the system is always available when it is needed most, during an
emergency.
Already in use in some of the most important and prestigious buildings throughout the

evacuate people quickly and easily. A Voice Alarm system could be installed in all offices,
factories, warehouses, shops, sports stadia, cinemas, theatres, schools and public buildings.
and peace VIGIL2 will integrate with any fire alarm system and will ensure that alert and evacuate
messages are broadcast clearly and intelligibly. Operating automatically means that the system

important. System Design and Rack Build

The designing of a system is a very important part of the service that we provide. Our
willingness and ability to make special products has contributed to our success. Very few
systems are exactly the same, which means there is a need for all design parameters to be
taken into consideration.
Our system design engineers will, whenever possible, configure the system using standard
products. However, we recognise and cater for those projects that require something different
and special. This, for example, could be a custom-built microphone or control panel. Once we
have agreed on the design, we will build the system and can, if required, arrange for
commissioning once the installation has been completed.
This is all part of our commitment to providing a complete service, from the planning stage
through to completion of the project.
With all VIGIL2 Voice Alarm Systems it is critical that during the design stages both fire rated
cable and loudspeakers are incorporated, thus ensuring the whole system will comply to
relevant standards.

Batteries
We recommend and supply high-quality lead acid batteries. They are sealed, valve regulated
and maintenance free. As standard our batteries are available rated at 15, 40, 60, 75, 90 and
125 Ampere hours. Larger standby systems can be provided and will be designed and
calculated by our engineers. It is important that all Voice Alarm batteries comply with BS5839
or EN60849. The batteries activate when the mains has failed under emergency conditions.

6
BVCOM ‘Compact’ ~ Routeing Matrix
The BVCOM ‘COMPACT’ is a self-contained four zone fully monitored, fully featured Voice
Alarm routeing matrix. The job of the BVCOM is to provide a set of standard inputs, facilities
and options at the front end of any VIGIL2 Voice Alarm system. Like all the VIGIL2 range,
BVCOM is designed to meet the current standards for Voice Alarm systems in public places,
BS5839 part 8 and EN60849.
The BVCOM has seven standard inputs for two Fire Microphones with priority,
one 32 second Evacuation message, one 32 second Alert message, two paging microphones
and one line source for background music. Any of these inputs can be routed through
any of the four outputs.
The BVCOM also boasts a monitored fire alarm system interface, loudspeaker line monitoring
via BEL1 end of line units and audio monitoring of all inputs through an internal speaker or
headphones. Other features include music input with bass, treble and volume controls on the
front panel, level limiter and DC controlled zonal remote volume control facility with the
MS2V. As with all VIGIL products, the BVCOM has a lamp test switch for all fault indicators.
Demand has grown for Voice Alarm (VA) systems over the last few years and VA is required
in an increasingly wide range of different types of locations. One area of demand is for
locations with a number of smaller buildings spread across one large site.VIGIL Compact is
perfect for these decentralised sites.
By simply fitting an optional BVCOM485 card to each Compact routeing matrix and including
a BVR Voice Alarm Microphone, decentralisation is possible. Up to sixteen VIGIL Compacts
can communicate via the BVR microphone. It is also possible to link a number of BVRD2M
(VIGIL2 EVAS) systems, Compact Racks and VIGIL Eclipses together.
The BVCOM has various options including a socket for the OPTEQ loudspeaker frequency
equaliser and a chime option on all microphone inputs with the OPT33
chime module.
Due to the physical size of the BVCOM (1U) rack systems will decrease in height, meaning
the already market-leading VIGIL Voice Alarm systems will cost even less.

BVR16/32/48M ~ Microphone Controller
The BVR Voice Alarm microphone is specifically designed for the Voice Alarm market and
interfaces with either the BVRD2M or VIGIL Compact to offer full system control. The BVR
microphone performs as a Paging Microphone, Fire Microphone or an Emergency All
Call microphone.
The BVR Microphone Controller allows routine paging broadcasts to be made to any or all
zones. In an emergency the system operator can simply take control of the situation and the
unit can assume an emergency control mode. The unit then has a higher priority and live
broadcasts will override any commands from the Fire Alarm Panel.
It is also possible to trigger up to seven digitally stored messages to any or all zones. In this
manner it is possible to simultaneously alert some areas, evacuate others and also make live
announcements to the remaining areas.
The microphone will also mimic the status of the local Fire Alarm Panels, so the operator can
immediately access the current state of the emergency and take control. Further areas can
then be assured by live broadcasts, alerted or, if necessary, evacuated by the messages.
The microphone also provides details of various system faults, which include System, Message,
Microphone, Processor and Data Link Faults.
Additionally the unit can select any of four Background Music sources and route them to any
or all zones.
As with all VIGIL2 products the microphone controller is fully BS5839 part 8 and EN60849
compliant and is fully monitored by utilising parity checking and hand shaking techniques.

The major features of the microphone controller are as follows:

L 16, 32 or 48 zone selection as standard.
L Six message selection buttons.
L Fault indicators.
L ‘Speak Now’ indicators.
L Zone Status indicators.
L All Call paging.
L Background Music selection per zone.
L Speech Level indicator.
L Monitoring of microphone speech and signal paths.
L Flush mount bezel available.

BVRAMB ~ Ambient Noise Sensor

The BVRAMB is an ambient noise-sensing device, which works in conjunction with the VIGIL
EVAS BVRD2M to automatically adjust the power of the Voice Alarm amplifiers depending on
the ambient noise. The system is ideal for any location where audibility could be a problem
due to variable noise level, such as leisure centres, railway stations, busy restaurants or
factories etc. When the area is at its quietest the volume of the announcements or music will
reduce. When the areas are at their busiest and noisiest, the amplifiers increase in power to
ensure that all announcements etc will be audible above the background noise.
The BVRAMB Ambient Noise Sensing Microphone is combined with a BVRDC1 (interface
module) which connects to our VIGIL EVAS BVRD2M. The BVRAMB uses a dynamic
microphone capsule, the output of which is amplified then converted to produce a variable
current output. This output is used by the BVRDC1 to produce a voltage that is proportional
to the level of ambient noise. The amplifier, which is used to convert the signal, has band pass
filtering that ensures the system only responds to noise that affects the level of ambient noise.

Eclipse2
The VIGIL Eclipse2 is a cost-effective wall-mountable voice alarm, or public address, system
which has the ability to handle up to seven single or four dual circuit zones. The unit
incorporates the standard VIGIL2 amplifiers and switch mode power supply and houses one
standard Baldwin Boxall amplifier mainframe.
The stand-alone system provides a highly-efficient solution to the voice alarm market and its
simple design enables straight-forward installation and commissioning. As with all Baldwin
Boxall voice alarm products, it simply connects to leading fire alarm panels via the internal fire
alarm interface.VIGIL Eclipse2 is supplied as standard with two BEL1 end of line monitoring
devices allowing system monitoring (more BEL1 units may be required depending on the size
of the proposed system). Any faults are stored within a fault log which can be viewed either
via the front panel or simply downloaded via the USB2 port.
At the heart of the system is a DSP controlled routeing matrix which offers the same
features as the VIGIL EVAS BVRD2M, please refer to page 8 and 9 for full details.

The main features are:

L Parametric EQ on all eight inputs and seven outputs
L Six CD quality flash-stored messages
L One ‘all call’ failsafe emergency message
L Ambient noise sensing
L Auto amplifier changeover
L USB2 port allowing system configuration, message revision via laptop
L Fault and history logging
L Realtime clock

Fully BS5839 part 8 and EN60849 compliant, the VIGIL Eclipse2 is smaller than its
predecessor measuring only 480mm (W) x 200mm (D) x 680mm (H). The whole system is
powered by a 230V AC 50-60Hz power supply and comes with battery backup to allow the
system to fully function should the mains power supply fail.
The unit is ideal for a decentralised network as it is possible to link 128 units and also can
form part of a larger VIGIL EVAS voice alarm system.
This innovative voice alarm/public address system can work in almost any situation, whether
in an office, shopping centre, airport, factory, school, leisure complex, etc, making it the ideal
solution for any small, medium or even large project.
L Please refer to the VIGIL ECLIPSE2 brochure for further information.

15
BEL10 ~ End of Line
The DIN rail mounted BEL10 is the equivalent of ten BEL1 end of line units. Loudspeaker
lines terminate at the BEL10 which will then monitor the critical signal path for open, short
circuit and earth line faults (as required by BS5839 part 8). Should a fault be detected on
any of the ten loudspeaker circuits, the fault is indicated on the main Voice Alarm rack.
Typically, the BEL10 will be used to ease the upgrading of an existing Voice Alarm system
where the loudspeaker lines are wired in a loop back to the rack.
Please be aware during the design stage of a VA system that each BEL1 unit uses
approximately three Watts of power from the associated amplifier.

BEL1 ~ End of Line

The BEL1 End of Line monitoring device is an active unit, which connects to every speaker
circuit within a Voice Alarm system. It is permissible to have up to four BEL1s on one speaker
run, as set out in the figure below. When doing this please ensure that internal DIL switches
are set correctly.
The main function of this unit is to monitor the critical signal path of speaker lines for open,
short circuit and earth faults. Any faults will be detected and fault warnings will be shown
within the main Voice Alarm rack routeing mixers.
Please be aware during the design stage of a VA system that each unit uses approximately
three Watts of power from the amplifier. The BEL1 is supplied in a standard metal IP65 clad
box and is designed for mounting within a building and must not be mounted externally.

The BEL2 is an active, speaker isolation unit, which isolates up to 15 Watts of load within one
spurred cable run in case of short or open circuit. This device triggers faults in the
same way as our BEL1.
Please be aware during the design stage of a VA system that each unit uses approximately
one Watt of power from the amplifier. The BEL2 is supplied in a standard metal clad box and

BEL3 ~ Active Speaker Reassurance Device
The BEL3 is an active reassurance device designed to indicate the correct operation of each
individual loudspeaker in a medium to large voice alarm (VA) system.
The unit locates within each loudspeaker and shows full operation via an LED indicator. This
system is designed to cut VA system maintenance times, as the engineer simply walks around
the site, checking that the LED is illuminated. If a fault exists, the LED will not illuminate and a
fault indicator will sound at the main equipment rack.
This system therefore removes the need to inject audible signals through the VA system for
testing purposes. Making it ideal for any public building where testing is usually a problem,
such as 24-hour supermarkets, areas with high background/ambient noise and areas where
noise generation will be a hindrance.
The physical size (L70 x W30 D40mm) of the BEL3 enables it to be mounted in almost any
loudspeaker, whether it be ceiling, horn or cabinet type. The product already has support
from the main speaker manufacturers, including Bose, DNH, Next Two and Penton who have
fitted BEL3 units into their equipment.

BEL4 ~ Active Speaker Isolation Unit

The BEL4 allows simple monitoring of individual speakers and enables a low impedance
speaker to be fitted to 100V line Voice Alarm systems.
The BEL4 can be either supplied as a single PCB (product code - BEL4) or with the PCB
housed within a metal clad box (product code – BEL4B).
The unit is dust and water resistant (BEL4B), and contains a BEL3 reassurance device. The
100 Volt line connections to the unit are by ceramic terminal block. If fire rated cable is used,
the unit is BS5839 Part 8 compliant. The BEL4 also contains a 100 Volt transformer meaning
the speaker will not require transformers – a vital cost saving when installing speakers.
The units will work in conjunction with a variety of 4 or 8 Ohm speakers with transformer
tappings at 6, 3, 1.5 and 0.75 Watt. An LED is housed within the unit and this acts in the same
way as the BEL3 LED. Wiring will also be a quick and easy process. Just connect the
loudspeaker lines to the unit then fit the speakers using the ceramic terminal block.

17
BVLAM ~ Impedance Montitor
The BVLAM is a 1U high rack mountable unit which provides eight loudspeaker zone
selection from one amplifier. On receipt of a signal from an input (i.e. zone selecting
microphone) the BVLAM triggers the amplifier to output to the selected zone. Switching
from one zone to another is enabled via a relay switch.
The BVLAM also incorporates constant impedance monitoring on each of the eight
loudspeaker circuits when not selected. LEDs are used to indicate a drop or increase in
impedance – set at either 20% or 40% by use of the mode DIL. LEDs on the BVLAM will
also show an access fault for any of the eight zones from the microphone. Additionally, LED
indicators are provided to show ‘system healthy’ and ‘supply healthy’.
Two BVLAM units can be mounted across one rack ‘shelf ’

BVTERM2 ~ Tenant’s Interface

The BVTERM2 is an interface which allows simple connection from the landlord’s VA/PA
system (i.e. main shopping mall) to the tenant’s VA/PA system (i.e. internal store). This means
that an evac message, etc, that is being broadcast throughout the landlord’s system can be
relayed to a tenant’s VA system which will override the tenant’s broadcast.
The landlord’s interleaved A and B loudspeaker circuits are simply wired into the BVTERM2
using fire rated cable, and then an audio input is wired from the BVTERM2 to the tenant’s VA
rack as the highest priority. Access is via a cable pair wired from the landlord’s system into
the access terminals of the BVTERM2, this access then triggers the audio output so that the
landlord’s evac/alert message etc, is then played through the tenant’s system.
If the landlord’s system provides a surveillance tone, this is also detected by the tenant’s VA
system and local faults will be announced at the tenant’s system.

Annunciator Panel Interface

We can supply bespoke annunciator interfaces for Voice Alarm, Call Point and Fire Telephone
Systems, which enable staff to simply view the building status throughout an emergency on a
floor by floor basis. On each floor display there are typically four LEDs showing the condition
of the evacuation and alert messages plus a fault and voice select status. It is also possible to
activate the evacuate or alert message manually to each floor or, by using the fist
microphone, make live announcements.

BS5839 ~ Part 8 Explained...
VIGIL2 has been designed and is built to meet the relevant British standards. One of these is
BS5839 ~ ‘Fire detection and alarm systems for buildings’.This has been revised to include
Part 8:The code of practice for the design, installation and servicing of voice alarm systems.
There are some disciplines hidden within BS5839 Part 8, which we would like to point
out to you.These include:
1. At least two loudspeaker circuits are required in the building. If the building contains an
open area greater than 4,000m2 OR if the building is designed to accommodate more
than 500 members of the public, dual circuits should be used. This achieves suitable
coverage should one of the circuits become short or open circuit.
2. Cabling for dual circuits must not be contained in one single sheath.
3. Where a processor-controlled system is used the following points must be followed...
Baldwin Boxall is driven by
L Any system configuration data should have restricted access.
objectives that include: L Do not use rotary discs (i.e. computer hard disc) or any other media moving parts.
L Any processor must be monitored e.g. ‘watchdog’.
Absolute Reliability. L Should the processor fail and re-gain normal operation there should be a processor reset
indication on the equipment and a fault announced.
L At least one emergency microphone must have the provision to manually access an All
Continuous development Call, should the processor fail.
4. The monitoring of the system should include the following...
of products.
L Normal power.
L Standby power.
A willingness to listen to L Battery chargers.
the needs of end users. L Fuses & protective devices.
L Critical signal paths. See definition ~ number 8.
L Emergency messages.

environment for our L Standby amplifiers.

workforce. L Select wires on a multi-zone emergency microphone.

L All links between a de-centralised system.
L Detection of missing modules or amplifiers within the critical signal path.
L Automatic level controllers must be monitored and should fail safe to a
pre-determined level, not mute.
5. The system should latch the input condition from the fire panel ensuring that if a
link is broken the alarm broadcast continues. Reset is achieved by a separate signal
from the fire panel.
6. After reset the system should be capable of producing a general evacuate broadcast
within 30 seconds.
7. Any fault should be indicated or announced within 100 seconds.
8. A reserve amplifier should be used to provide backup to maintain the required speech
intelligibility in the event of amplifier failure.
9. Definition of critical signal paths ~ all components and interconnections between
every fire alarm broadcast initiation point and the input terminals on, or within each
loudspeaker enclosure.
The VIGIL2 range of products is designed and manufactured to meet BS5839 Part 8 when
utilised within a system.
