Key Teaching Points

Bowling
Basic KTP’s

- “Step, Reach, Roll, Release”

Basic Grip

- ‘Bunny Rabbit’ fingers

- First two fingers on top of seam

- Thumb underneath

“Pull the String” (Basic learning technique)

- stand side on to target

- Pretend hands are tied together by string

- Stretch the string with front arms reaching for


the sky

- Bowling arm next to back knee

- Pull the string down with front arm to release


the bowling hand over to release the ball

- Follow through with bowling hand across the


body

(STAND SIDE ON, STRETCH THE STRING, PULL THE STRING, FOLLOW THROUGH)

Run Up

- accelerate gradually

- Keep arms in close to body

- all body movement in direction of


target

- Head steady, eyes fixed on target

Gather

- all body movements directed at target

- Bowling hand, ball and arms kept


under shoulder level until airborne

- Arms move continuously with a


forward motion

Back Foot Impact

- posture = hips and shoulders in line

- Balanced

- Keep head high and eyes steady

- Arms folded in close to body

Delivery Stride

- pull the front arm strongly down the target line and keep elbow close to the body

- Arms and shoulders rotate as vertically as possible towards the batter

- Front foot points towards the batter

- Front elbow locked and bowling arm horizontal at front foot impact

Release

- high ball release

Followthrough

- followthrough initially directed at target

- Bowling arm comes across body

Types of Bowling
Swing Bowling

Outswing

- seam upright

- Wrist behind the ball

- Point seam towards 1st/2nd slip

- Release ball off index and 2nd finger

- Shiny side of ball faces leg side

- Follow through across body

Inswing

- seam upright

- Wrist behind ball

- Point seam towards fine leg

- Release ball off middle finger

- Shiny side of ball faces off side

- Followthrough down side of body

Seam Bowling

Off Cutter

- first finger is placed down seam with middle finger spread wider on the leather

- At point of delivery, the wrist is brought down towards backward square leg

Leg Cutter

- middle finger down the seam with first finger spread wider on leather

- at point of delivery, wrist and fingers are brought down the off side of the ball

Spin Bowling

Offspin (finger spin)

- Grip = (cock wrist toward body with palm facing the


batsman)

- Firm grip

- Drive over braced front leg (short delivery stride)

- High front arm and bowling arm

- Exaggerate followthrough

Legspin (Wrist spin)

- Grip: (cock wrist toward body with palm facing the


straight behind the bowler)

- LEG BREAK, WRONG’UN, TOPSPINNER

- Weight transfer

- Side on

- High release point

- Spin up not down

- back of hand faces bowler for leg break

- back of hand faces off side for topspinner

- back of hand faces batter for wrong’un
