REYROLLE
24-1) Causes of Over Excitation (Over-fluxing)

Voltage Control malfunction - Generator running overexcited

- VT fuse failure
- Tap-changer runaway
- missing VT fuses or running overexcited

Lightly Loaded OHL’s - Teed Connections

Capacitor Bank Malfunction - excess MVAR support

Transformer AVC Malfunction - tap changer runaway

Remnant Flux in core - d.c. heat run test, fast fault clearance

All above can cause sustained over voltage to be applied to the transformer.
Under frequency also causes over fluxing of core, but generally load shedding is used to recover frequency.

REYROLLE
49) Transformer Thermal Overload

FACTORS AFFECTING TRANSFORMER TEMPERATURE

1. Load Current:- I2R Heating of Windings and Core Losses - source side usually hottest
2. Level of Excitation:- High volts increase leakage flux & eddy currents
3. Ambient Temperature:- Steel tank (very low thermal resistance) and thermally the oil can be
considered to be in direct contact with air.
4. Type of Cooling:- natural, forced air, forced oil/directed and operational state.
5. Physical Design and Size:- Modern designs have shorter thermal time constants and are
more dependent on forced and directed cooling.

EFFECTS OF OVER-HEATING

1. Insulation Degradation:- Dielectric strength compromised)

2. Reduced short circuit withstand
3. Gas Bubble Production:- Possible Partial Discharge and oil breakdown
4. Reduced Transformer Life Expectancy

Commissioning Advice

• ReyDisp software can be used to assist with

the commissioning of Duobias M.

• To check vector group setting and

connections using primary current injection,
a 3-phase S/C can be applied to the
transformer primary and 3-phase LVAC
applied to the secondary side.

• As this method results in very low primary

currents, the metering on the relay LCD
cannot be used. ReyDisp is used to trigger
waveform storage. The ADC on the relay is
sensitive enough to measure down to 5mA
accurately.

• The waveform can be checked to make sure

relay currents are correctly in anti-phase,
and the waveform stored as a test record.

• A similar method can be used to check

correct connection of REF elements.
