ACTIVITY/LESSON PLAN OUTLINE

Student: Abby Cronin School/Center:

ECED 407 Age Level: Kindergarten

Professor Obenshain Activity: There was an Old Lady Who

Swallowed a Fly by Lucille Colandro:
Reading Activity

Date: 4/12/2018 Time Allotted for Entire Activity: 60 minutes

Activity/Lesson Overview

Developmental Goals (Long-term goals to be attained over an extended period of time; please cite
source):
(MD College and Career-Ready Standards)
RL1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
(SC, K)
RL2 With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details. (SC, K)

Objectives (Specific observable and measurable objectives for this particular activity):

Reading Objectives:
Students will be able to actively listen to Lucille Colandro’s There Was An Old Lady Who
Swallowed a Fly. Students will be able to participate in before, during, and after reading
discussions. After reading, students will watch and listen to the nursery song, “There Was an Old
Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” by The Learning Station, through Youtube to recap the order in which
she ate the items. Students will be able to sequence the order of what the old lady ate in the book on
the ActivInspire board by dragging and dropping what she ate in her belly.

Assessment of Learning (Strategies for determining whether the objectives are met, including the
criteria for success.)

Students must participate in group discussion and the sequencing activity. I must be confident that
the students understand the activity through individual observation of each child if they drop the
items in the correct order.

Group Size and Learning Environment:

There are __ students in the room. The class size will be dependent on who is absent or
pulled-out of the class room during the lesson.

I will be using the rocking chair to read the book and the children will sit on the square that
has their name on it that faces the chair. After the book, I will play the Youtube video and
perform the sequencing activity on the ActivInspire board.

Activity/Lesson Implementation
OPENING Time Allotted: 5 min

Assessment of Prior Knowledge (Foundation skills/knowledge that children need to have/ know
before the activity begins. If the children lack these skills/knowledge, identify the strategies that will be
used to provide them):

I will then show them There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves! As a before
reading discussion, I will ask them their predictions.

Questions to ask:

Ask predictions based on the cover of the book and what they’ve read before.
What do you think the old lady would’ve eaten next?

Motivation:

I will get their attention by quieting them down and saying, “if you can hear me touch your
nose… head… knees…” The motivation of the activity will be obvious because I will have
the ActivInspire board as a fun interactive tool they will be excited to use.

ACTIVITY Time Allotted: 15 min

Procedures (Detailed, step-by-step explanation of the activity. Add or delete rows Delete if Extension
time is used if
as appropriate. Check appropriate column to the right if the procedure is to be short time

extended to use the time allotted):
1. Get attention by quieting them down on carpet
2. Before reading discussion/Predictions
Ask if the students know a book similar to this one
Ask predictions.
3. Read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly/Ask Bloom’s
questions during book
4. (After Reading) Play music video of “There was an Old Lady Who
Swallowed a Fly” and have children stand-up and dance while paying
attention to sequencing
5. Students will participate in sequencing activity on ActivInspire board
by dragging and dropping items into the old lady’s belly.
6. Conclusion of lesson
CLOSURE Time Allotted: 5 min

Closure (Closure or summary of the activity for the children) :

After activity on ActivInspire board, ask students to review the sequencing of events. Ask
what they think the old lady would eat next and what their favorite part in the book was.
Then transition to next activity.

Transition (How the children will transition to the next activity):

After I read the book, I will ask them to sequence the order of events. Then we will sing a
song that will lead them to the next activity. Give them a chance to get their energy out by
playing a music video on white board and allow them to dance.

Additional Considerations

Advance Preparation:

Materials (Attach copies of songs, poems, etc. used during the activity and include quantity and specific
information related to materials such as title/author of books):

ActivInspire Board and ActivInspire Activity

Modification for Diverse Learners: (Modifications to meet the diverse learning needs of all children
in this class. Plan should include adaptations beyond what is done on a daily basis for a group or
particular child):

I could give a modified pen to use on the ActivInspire board if they cannot reach the board.

I could give a student a hand-out if they are physically disabled.

I could also offer the same book in a different language for a one-on-one to read to a bilingual child.

I could read slower depending on a student’s level of processing.

I could also offer different seating than the carpet for the students who need it.

Modifications for Cultural Diversity: (Modifications to make the activity relevant and meaningful for
children of diverse cultures and/or to expose children to diverse cultures):

I could ask the students to think outside the items the old lady swallowed. From knowledge of the
background already, I could ask what each student’s grandma (or significant family member) likes
to eat.

I could also offer the same book in a different language for a one-on-one to read to a bilingual child.

Supplementary Activities (For children who finish early):

I could ask the children who finish early to try writing the words of the items the old lady
ate.

Possible Enrichment Activities (List additional activities which support or enhance this activity.
Note that implementation of these activities is entirely optional) :

I could print a ditto that allows the children to think creatively about the book. For
example, I could create a picture of an old lady with an empty stomach. After reading the
book, I would ask them, “what else would the old lady eat?” Once we have a little
discussion, I will ask them to draw their ideas in the old lady’s stomach as if she swallowed
it.

I could allow them to do an individual sequencing activity where they can cut and paste the
items the old lady ate in her mouth.

I could do an activity that focused on the phonics of the first letter of each item the old lady
ate. For example, if we were to focus on “fly”, I would ask them what they think “fly” starts
with and then direct them to write the letter “f” on a dry erase board to practice their
letters. I would repeat with every major noun in the book.
