Birds of Punta Sal

Aves de Punta Sal
Birds of Punta Sal / Aves de Punta Sal

Introduction / Introducción
In terms of bird diversity and conservation, the resort is located within the Tumbesian Endemic Bird
Area (EBA). This eco-region, which covers coastal north-west Peru and western Ecuador, is
considered one of the most important globally for its high levels of endemic species (species
restricted geographically in their distribution). It is also a global priority in terms of the high levels of
deforestation and degradation of the last native forests, which has lead to many species being
classified as threatened. In this sense documenting the distribution of birds within the region is
important to better understand the overall issues of conservation facing the area.

Species recorded / Especies registradas

A total of 53 species of 29 families were recorded during the study. Of these 16 are considered
as endemic species of the Tumbesian Endemic Bird Area. No threatened species were recorded.

Immature individuals of Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis), West Peruvian Dove (Zenaida
meloda), Pacific Parrotlet (Forpus coelestis), Southern Beardless-tyrannulet (Camptostoma
obsoletum), Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus), Superciliated Wren (Thryothorus
superciliaris), Tropical Gnatcatcher (Polioptila plumbea), Long-tailed Mockingbird (Mimus
longicaudatus), Cinereous Finch (Piezorhina cinerea), Streaked Saltator (Saltator striatipectus),
and Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) were recorded.

Shiny Cowbird Molothrus bonariensis is a parasitic nester, using the nests of other species to lay eggs
and rear the young. An immature individual of this species was seen begging for food from an adult
Superciliated Wren Thryothorus superciliaris, suggesting that the wren had been victim of the
cowbirds nesting strategy.

In a small rocky quebrada between the hotel and southern gate a roost of the Chestnut-collared
Swallow Petrochelidon rufocollaris was located; this is presumably used for nesting. Some 20 holes
or nests were counted.

Dove (Zenaida meloda), Pacific Parrotlet (Forpus coelestis), Southern Beardless-tyrannulet
(Camptostoma obsoletum), Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus), Superciliated Wren
(Thryothorus superciliaris), Tropical Gnatcatcher (Polioptila plumbea), Long-tailed Mockingbird
(Mimus longicaudatus), Cinereous Finch (Piezorhina cinerea), Streaked Saltator (Saltator
striatipectus) y Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis).

aproximadamente, 20 hoyos o nidos.
