INTRODUCTION
Personal development is a term that addresses the self-improvement, personality and potentials
available to apply it in life as well as the workplace. An individual can develop and improve their
personal through a variety of learning styles.

On the other hand, professional development is a term that describes the development of the
experience, knowledge, skills and abilities that the employee should have, showing stability, meet
the requirements of the job and it is the factors that help an individual to work more efficiently
than others.

This assignment describes my management skills and show how much I rate for each management
skill, I also use SWOT analysis to find out my strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
From then on, I created a personal development plan, figure out six objectives and review it in
order to know how to improve it or can I achieve these objectives or not.

2
I. SELF – MANAGED LEARNING
This task is prepared by Power Point and it is included at the Index

II. RESPONSIBILITY AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Being a student in business administration, becoming a talent manager is one of the goals that I'm
always aiming for. To accomplish that, equipping myself with the necessary management skills of
a manager is extremely important. Therefore, I always try to hone and improve those skills every
day to get a solid foundation before stepping out the life of a university student.

1. Management skills

a. Time Management skill

For time management skill, I am very confident that I can do the best and in a scientific way. In
each semester, my schedule is very dense with four different subjects. This will be very difficult
if I do not know how to arrange the time properly. Whenever I receive assignments from teachers,
I always identify goals and list the tasks that need to be done for each assignment. Then, I arranged
the task in order of priority, based on the days to deadline that teacher had given earlier, which one
is near the deadline, I will do first then to the other. Also, during assignment, I always practice for
myself the discipline and the habit of saving time, set my own rules and follow these rules:

 Always write down SMART objective before doing assignments every day (Determine the
task, the start time, the end time and the total time to complete the task)
 Focus all the strength and wisdom to work.
 Always keep the learning space neat and clean.

In my experiment, some of my classmates still have to chase the time because they do not know
how to utilize, organize work and arrange time for the best fit. Every second that passed never
regained, so before doing anything, I always have a specific plan to manage time in a most
scientific way, to avoid wasting time in vain.

b. Negotiation

At this age, I had never been exposed to the part-time jobs outside, so my negotiation skill is
applied only in situations with the family, with friends, relatives so I see that negotiation skill is

3
quite simple to me in my current situation. I always try to look for negotiations where there are
mutual benefits however, it is not also possible to avoid unsuccessful negotiations. For example:
My dad is taking an English course and I found that there are many tasks that he really need help.
So, I offered that: “I will help you to do these tasks, in return, I will not cook for a week, do you
agree?”. In this situation, if my father does not agree, he will not be able to do without the guidance
from me and I will have to cook for a week. And, I succeeded. Another case that is an unsuccessful
negotiation, I paid a pair of children's shoes for 350,000 VND but the seller still keeps the price is
500.000 VND. I did not accept to pay more and the seller did not accept the price that I have
suggested also. Therefore, the purchase was not happened, I cannot buy shoes for my brother, and
the seller did not have 350,000 VND from me. These are two examples of my negotiations, but I
almost put the negotiation to the end that I and that person are beneficial.

I do not know how negotiation skill will be applied to future work, and how is it different from
negotiating with family, relatives and friends, maybe I will lose or maybe both of us will lose.
Therefore, now I'm setting up my own methods and criteria to prepare for a negotiation with a
business partner. I think I need to have a plan before negotiating with the partner including the
preparation, proceeding and finishing steps. Before performing a negotiation with someone, I set
up a close relationship with them first as relationship with my family in order to understand
something about the partners self, what they have and what they need. I also set a principle that “If
I want to receive, just give”. I thought that the key of negotiation is both parties receive valuable
things by the concession of myself and my partner or on the other hand, I give them what they
need, I will get something of value for myself, or for my company. Thus, we will feel successful
when leaving the negotiating table. These are some principles and methods that I have set out. In
the near future, I will try to perfect this list to equip myself with a knowledge of negotiation skill
before I start a future job.

c. Leadership

During the time at the university, I have been tasked to become a leader of my group in many time.
I thought this is opportunity that help me to improve my leadership skill. After being a leader many
times, I noticed that my leadership style is Democratic. I always learn to trust and have an
understanding of team members. I often create a comfortable atmosphere for my group members,
always encouraging people to express their opinions. In my team, ideas are exchanged freely and

4
openly discussed. Each member has more opportunity to participate in process of decision making.
To make the most right and most appropriate decision, I always make sure that the opinion is voted
by everyone in my group. In future I want to learn different leadership styles so that I need more
time to experience them because it helps me to be more flexible to choose the right leadership style
that suits each situation

d. Delegation

Example: The lecturer gave us the task of creating a video and presentation on six thinking hats.
Before responsible for assigning tasks to the team members, I always reconsider that who are my
team members and what are their strengths, weakness. Then, with the big task that the teacher was
assigned to my team before, I made a list of small tasks and divided them to suit each advantage
of each team member. In this case, my strategy is:

 The members who good at knowledge, will be the creator of the content of six thinking
hats.
 The members who are technically proficient will responsible for making the video.
 The one who good at Microsoft Office will responsible for making the slide.
 Those who are gifted in the transmission of information will be responsible for presentation
 Individuals who lack these skills will be supporters of other members so that our team are
able to fulfill this task.

That's the way I delegate, assign tasks to each team member. With an understanding of the
strengths and weaknesses of each member, it not only helps me assign the right task to the right
member as well as it also helps our team to accomplish the task ahead of schedule.

e. Problem Solving

In study, when discussing, although my team members and I are very open to finding the best
ideas, but when I asked the team members to present, give me the tasks that I assigned to them
before, I found a lot of problems and it really does not satisfy me. At this point, I was the person
who found the solution to solve the problem without having to discuss it with the team members.
I solve it by my own, fix all content that it completely does not fit my own criteria in some aspects
from aesthetics, to content, as well as the seamlessness of each task and so on.

5
For family life, it is different, I rarely have to solve the problem alone. Whenever I have problems
with anything such as choosing the next direction when I finish my four years of university or
problems with my classmates or even problems with love and so on, I cannot solve it by my own.
I always feel awkward, struggling in many thoughts until I find my parents, relatives. They give
me various tips, give me many solutions to help me solve those problems. That makes me feel
more confident and relieve because my problems are also partially solved.

f. Communication

I am a person who often had difficulty in speaking than writing. I write very well and can convey
a lot of information through a paragraph. But conversely, I cannot say the same as what I can write.
I realized that my communication skills were limited because I lacked social knowledge as well as
I was an introvert person who did not communicate much in front of the crowd, or with people
that I'm not really close to or strangers. Basically, I cannot find a topic to talk to them and I was
very shy and lack of confidence when talking. But that is not really my true personality, with close
friends, I am very open, very funny, laugh a lot and say a lot. I can live with my true self when I'm
with my close friends.

Also, my relationship with SUD 15 classmates is not so close, so I am a person who does not
communicate much in this class. Basically, because my selection criteria are very high, “a good
friend is the one who will not talk about myself without my appearance at that time”. I understand
people through my eyes and my ears, see how they express and hear what they say. When that
person is completely inappropriate, I just keep the relationship at a social level, not too close or
even I would not care what the person says, so everyone in the class commented me as a very quiet
person.

In the presentation, it is difficult for me to self – presentation without having memorized earlier. I
always practice in front of the mirror every evening, but when the presentation really happening,
I almost lose my temper and become unnatural. I also tried to combine body language but that did
not make me better. Sometimes I really feel disappointed in myself because I think, if I want to
become a manager, communication skill is the most important skill. If I do not have this skill, it is
a big trouble for me in conveying the information to my staff as well as my partner.

6
g. Motivation

I only occasionally motivate my team members, not too much nor too little. Whenever my team
members give good ideas, I always listen to them and say "Good job" as an encouragement to their
spirit, helping them to see that they are a part of the team. Moreover, for example, we participate
in a big presentation with the appreciation of the guest judge, after the end, I do not forget to give
them a clap or praise them that “You have done very well”. I do so because I want to respect and
praise their contributions as well as it will make them in particular and our group in general become
more cohesive. I really want to motivate and be motivated, but because of the current
circumstances, I can only improve this skill a little so that I need to practice more on this skill in
order to prepare for my future.

h. Team Building

Me and my classmates were involved in Team Building activities which is organized by teachers
of Sunderland University such as Decathlon, Amazing Race or team building activities of Mr.
Ignacio. Through these activities, although I'm not the best main player because I am not good at
physical well – being but I was very active in my activities as well as contributing ideas to make
strategies, help my team can win the game. Furthermore, working in a team, I learned that all
members should remove the self, should be responsible as well as we need to have spirit of
solidarity, that is the key to success.

7

as lack of communication, lack of funds or some member disagree with other’s idea and lead
to conflicts. Therefore, to solve in time to achieve the best results, the application of problem-
solving tools is very necessary including six - thinking hats, fish bone diagram ... These tools
help us can evaluate agents from various aspects so that we can make decisions better.

1. Problems and solve the problems

During the time that SUD 15 there is a problem that is me, Jen and some other members do not
agree with Pony's opinion. Firstly, Pony told that 23 members of SUD 15 will be divided into
3 teams include selling cookies team, bingo team, responsibility for raising funds and activities
team which is responsibility for held games, activities for children at the sponsored center.
Virtually, the idea initially was opposed by me and Jen, because the number of members of the
SUD 15 pretty little so no need to split into 3 teams, but make people to work together. When
the discussion become tense, I took the initiative to use 5 Whys so that help Pony could express
her opinion more objectively and clearly, since, alleviate the tension and at the same time, help
solve the problem quickly. Below is question that I asked Pony and her answer:

 Why do you want to divide into three teams?

 Because it will easy to manage.
 We still have a small members number but why?
 If we split up into teams, things will become simpler and less messy.
 Why?
 First, we do not have enough time, if we split into teams, the members of each team
will have a specific job, will perform it more quickly and timely.
 How many team do you want?
 3 teams. We will have selling cookies team, bingo team and activity team

28
After asking her and hearing her answers, me, Jen and everyone can understand the situation
and decide to divide 23 members of SUD 15 into 3 teams.

I am a leader of Bingo team and my team have me, Bruce, Dorothy, Luna, Son and Kobe. At
the beginning, I assigned the task to each person in accordance with their abilities, Son and
Kobe will be responsible for hosting Bingo, and me, Bruce, Dorothy and Luna are responsible
for ticket preparation and ticketing. The amount that we expected is 2 million, but we only
collected amount less than the amount expected a lot, so the problem we face is lack of financial
resources.

White hat No enough financial resources

Red hat  Pressure

 Members feel very sad and disappointed

Black hat  Hard to find sponsors

Yellow hat  It is a condonation for every student of SUD becoming closer.

 Improve friendships/relationship
 Have money for charity activity

Green hat  Leader will try to motivate the members

 Finding sponsors
 Ask for help from family and other sources
 Persuading people to buy more tickets
 Create a program "Buy 2 get 1"

Blue hat  Leader must give people a sense of responsibility in their work
 Clear checklist
 Create teamwork spirits
 Everyone can have a change to improve event coordinator skills
 Create a good atmosphere when doing teamwork
 Leader should take measures to punish those members who do
not cooperate, affect to team and activity.

The money that we got from selling cookies and bingo is 3.4 million and it still do not reach
the target of us so that we cannot implement as planned.

ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT
30
Recognizing that we did not reach the target amount, people in SUD 15 had a talk to find a solution.
It is known that John family is a well–off family, after contact, we're pleased to support from
family of John with the amount of 1 million. John's family helped SUD 15 get the money that we
expected, help we can give to the orphans gifts and the warmest feelings. With the money we got
which 4.4 million, Jen divided SUD 15 into two groups, one will be responsible for buying
confectionery, one will be responsible for collecting the warm clothes and packing. Although we
had problem about financing, but with effort, we were able to solve the problem in order to not
miss an appointment with the kids.

2. Communication in a variety of styles and appropriate manner at various level

In order to be able to carry out charity work, communication is extremely important.
Communication has two types, non-verbal and verbal. Depending on the purpose of use, choose
the appropriate communication method. The internal communication includes the communication
between people inside an organization and external communication include the communication
between people inside and outside the organization. In this case, internal communication is the
communicate with people in SUD 15 and in CIE through methods such as email, message, memos.
In contrast, external communication is the communicate with John’s family for assistance in
financing through the use of e-mail, business letter.

For my Bingo Team, I use message, personal letter and memorandum.

RE: “Asking for sponsorship”

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you concerning your support as a sponsor for our charity called “Warming the
Heart”. Every year, we do this charitable work as an essential part for our subject in order to help
homeless people, orphans, and handicapped children.

I know that DMT Company has as its mission a desire to give back to the local community, and
we greatly appreciate your support in years past. For this activity, we hope to raise fund at 5
million, and we need your help to reach our goal. Your contribution of 1 million would allow us
to buy more warm clothes for the kids. This will be a meaningful support for them to get through
the cold of coming winter.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I sincerely hope you will agree to sponsor this charity.
I am looking forward to receiving good response from you regarding this matter. If you interested
in, please contact me at 888nguyennguyen@gmail.com.

CONCLUSION
This assignment is closed with many emotions. A very honest assignment, go deep into the heart
of myself. First of all, I was exposed, told about my personalities, my own skills, what I have
experienced in the deepest way that all other assignment could not have been. In addition, from
that experience, I can know the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats around me, so that
I can set goals for myself in the near – far future in order to improve and develop my personal.
Furthermore, the most interesting part of this assignment is organizing charity activity. Through
this activity, I can understand clearly how SUD 15 do teamwork. SUD 15 together, contribute all
of effort in order to bring a very good thing to the life of orphans, homeless, disable kids. Those
kids had suffered a lot of hurt, they are lonely, they do not have parents so they really need love,
need to be took care from us, from community. Thanks Mr. Ignacio and CIE has created a condition
for us to approach these kids, to help them feel love and be love. Moreover, SUD 15 also helped
them feel that in their life, there are still have many persons that they can see as their parents and
make them believe in this life, they will not be lonely because SUD 15, CIE and community always
ready to help them, to share with them anytime and anywhere.
