I. Arps' formula approximates this relationship by:
Rw2=Rw1 (T1+6.77)
(T2+6.77)
Where, Rw1 is the solution resistivity at formation temperature T1. Rw2 is the resistivity at
temperature T2.
For finding out equivalent NACL at Rw2 at T2concentrationthe following chart can be used.
Q. 1. Given :Solution Resistivity=0.3 Ohm-m t1=75 F
Find :
i) Solution resistivity at 200 F.
ii) Equivalent NaCl concentration ................. ppm
iii) Equivalent NaCl concentration ................. rains/al
II. Direct measurements of filtrate & mudcake samples are preferred, whenthese are not
available, the mud filtrate resistivity (Rmf) mud cake resistivity (Rmc) with the following
method:
Rmf = Km (Rm)1.07
Rmc= 0.69(Rmf)(Rm/Rmf)2.65
Coefficient of mud (Km) given as a function given as a function of mud weight from the table
Mud Weight
lbm/gal Kg/m3 Km
10 1200 0.847
11 1320 0.708
12 1440 0.584
13 1560 0.488
14 1680 0.412
15 1920 0.380
16 2160 0.350
This chart is used to approximate ppm concentration of NaCl solution for which the total solids
concentration of the solution is known. Once the equivalent concentration of the solution is
known, the resistivity of the solution for a given temp can be estimated.
Conversion factor (Multiplier) to NaCl equivalent solutions when salinity is given in ppm.
Procedure: Multiply reported ions by above multiplier and the sum the results for a total NaCl
equivalent solution in ppm.
