Mandarin, HSK Mandarin 1 - 4, Chinese Martial Arts and Chinese Cultural


courses open at University of Johannesburg Confucius Institute (UJCI)
The University of Johannesburg Confucius Institute (UJCI) is currently taking applications and registration for
students interested in studying Basic Mandarin, Intermediate Mandarin, Business Mandarin, HSK Mandarin 1-
4, Chinese Martial Arts and Chinese Cultural course for the first semester of 2018.

Applications and Registration period has been extend until the 16th February 2018. For enquiries, please contact

We are proud to announce that the Basic Mandarin and Intermediate Mandarin Courses
(including Business Mandarin, Tourism Mandarin) have been approved as credited courses
and are offered at the University of Johannesburg for the first semester of 2018:
1. Basic Mandarin:

This course is designed for students with little or no Chinese language background. It aims to introduce
students the fundamentals of Mandarin language.

2. Intermediate Mandarin:

This course is designed for students who have finished the basic or have some prior knowledge of Chinese
language and culture. The aim of this course is to introduce students the further fundamentals of Mandarin
by engaging in the following aspects of the language: grammar learning, exercises of Chinese characters,
and oral discourse in daily life situations.

3. Business Mandarin:
This course is designed for students with some prior knowledge of Chinese language and culture. The aim
of this course is to provide students with the basic and relevant words, fundamental grammar and
commonly used sentence patterns of business Mandarin in many business situations.

The following courses are not credited courses however a certificate will be issued
1. HSK Mandarin I:

This course is specially designed for fresh starters who have the interests of passing HSK certificates (The
Chinese Proficiency Tests, or Chinese Standard Exams organized by Hanban, the headquarters of global
Confucius Institutes). Students will learn Pinyin (the Chinese phonetic system), simple characters, as well
as basic grammar in this phase of preparation. This course will prepare the students to pass the first level
of the Chinese Proficiency Tests, HSK-1.

2. HSK Mandarin II:

This course is designed for students who have some prior knowledge of Chinese language or have already
passed HSK-1. It will cover an introduction to the HSK exam structure, HSK-2 vocabulary lists, a range of
topics covered in HSK-2, as well as grammar of the language.

3. HSK Mandarin Ⅲ:
This course is designed for students who have some prior knowledge of Chinese language or have already
passed HSK-2. It will cover an introduction to the HSK exam structure, HSK-3 vocabulary lists, a range of
topics covered in HSK-3, as well as grammar of the language.

4. HSK Mandarin IV:
This course is designed for students who have some prior knowledge of Chinese language or have already
passed HSK-3. It will cover an introduction to the HSK exam structure, HSK-4 vocabulary lists, a range of
topics covered in HSK-4, as well as grammar of the language.
5. Featured Course:
 Chinese Martial Arts: We are glad to introduce a specially designed featured course of Chinese Martial
Arts. Our professional master will lead martial arts lovers to explore the real sense of Chinese kongfu.

6. Cultural Courses:
 Tai Ji (the traditional Chinese martial art of Tai Chi)

REGISTRATION PROCESS:
For UJ credited courses i.e. Basic Mandarin, Intermediate Mandarin, and Business Mandarin please follow
the steps below on how to register:

STEP 1 – Initial Application Process (University of Johannesburg Confucius Institute /UJCI)

 Apply by submitting their ID, Student Number or Matric Certificate, Mandarin Course interested in
studying to UJCI at smangelez@uj.ac.za
 If students meet requirements, UJCI issues them an acceptance letter.
Step 2 – Non-UJ students apply to get a student number (Enrolment Centre, Auckland Park Kingsway
Campus/APK)

 Take the acceptance letter to Enrolment Centre. Fill in/complete a manual application form to receive a
student number.

Step 3 – Payment of Registration Fee (Finance at APK)

 Pay registration fee and receive proof of payment.


 If there is a blockage due to owing previous fees or other reasons, the application to register will be
declined.
Step 4 – Registration (Faculty of Humanities at APK)

 Take proof of payment to the Faculty Officer (Ms. Amanda Mbozana) at office number: 234, C-Ring, APK
to get registered online and receive proof of registration.
Step 5 – Time Table (UJCI Website and Offices)

 Contact the Confucius Institute if not able to access a timetable on the website.
Step 6 – Issuing of student card (Enrolment Centre)

 Non-UJ student submit proof of enrolment (received after Step 4) to the Enrolment Centre to receive a
student card.

For non-credited UJCI courses please follow these steps for registration:
 Apply by filling in the information required on the UJCI website http://confucius-institute.joburg/ OR by
emailing your details (copy of ID and or Student Number), clearly indicating your preferred course to
Smangele Zwane on smangelez@uj.ac.za.

 Upon approval, pay registration to the following account:

COURSE DURATION:

The Basic Mandarin, Intermediate Mandarin and Business Mandarin were planned to commence on the 12th
February 2018 but due to the process involved in manual registration that we are following this year, many
students have not completed registration. We will therefore be extending registration deadline to Friday the
16th of February. This means classes for Basic, Intermediate and Business Mandarin will begin on the week of
the 19th February 2018 until 28 May 2018. These are 12 weeks long courses with two class sessions per week.
Students are required to attend all of the 24 sessions of the whole semester. (We also provide Saturday
morning class (9:00am—12:00) for students and staffs to learn Basic and Intermediate Mandarin courses.

The HSK Mandarin I, HSK Mandarin II, HSK Mandarin III, HSK Mandarin IV will start from 12 February 2018 and
end 7 May 2018. These are 10 weeks long courses with two class sessions per week.

Chinese Martial Arts and Tai Ji will start from 5 February 2018 and end 7 May 2018, but it is three classes a
session per week. Students are required to attend all of the 20 sessions of the whole semester.

TUITION AND REGISTRATION FEE:
For UJ credited modules (Basic Mandarin and Intermediate Mandarin and Business Mandarin) and the non-
credited modules (HSK Mandarin I, HSK Mandarin II, HSK Mandarin III and HSK Mandarin IV) the tuition is
free.
The registration fee for UJ students for all courses is R100.

For non-UJ students, registration is R300 for all courses.

Size: In order to achieve the best teaching outcome, the maximum size of each class is 100, and the minimum
size is 5.
