Type of lesson: Flipped Classroom

Lesson Plan Title: Volume of Prisms and Cylinders

Discipline/Topic: Mathematics

The topics that will be covered in this lesson are calculating the volume of prisms and cylinders.

Target Population:

Grade Level - 10th

Population Characteristics - The population of students in this classroom are enrolled

based on their state assessment scores, the NYS Algebra CC Regents. All students scored
between a 65 and 85. Many of the student have had a negative experience with
mathematics and lack motivation. Approximately 40% of the students complete the written
practice problems for homework each night.

Curriculum Links: This lesson is part of the Extending to Three Dimensions Unit in the New York
State Geometry Curriculum. Prior to this lesson, students would have explored calculating the area
of triangles, rectangles, and circles. Following this lesson, students will calculate the volume of
irregular three dimensional shapes.

3c. Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and
methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or
conclusions.

5c. Students break problems into component parts, extract key information, and develop
descriptive models to understand complex systems or facilitate problem-solving.

Objectives - Students will be able to identify and describe the characteristics of prisms and
cylinders. Students will be able to calculate the volume of prisms and cylinders.

Materials and Timing - 45 minutes

Students will need Chromebooks or Smart Devices, notebooks, pencils, and calculators.

Scope and Sequence -

Online - Prior to the live classroom, students will complete the online portion at home.
Students will watch the six minute video (https://youtu.be/IcbH_NtH1SI). This video will introduce
prisms and guide students through an example to calculate the volume of a triangular prism.
Students will have to complete a set of guided notes while watching the video and independently
solve one volume problem.

Live Classroom - When students enter the classroom they will complete a “quick five”
assessment. The Google Classroom form will assess students on vocabulary from the online video
and two volume application problems. Based on the students scores, they will be placed into groups
to review the concepts and deepen understanding. Students who score 1 or 2 will meet with myself
to complete a corrective assignment. The questions on this worksheet will model the application
problems in the previous night’s video and the quick five assessment. The students who scored a 3
will independently complete a practice worksheet. Students who scored a 4 or 5 will create an
interactive Padlet that includes three resources for calculating volume, a problem set with three
questions, and a link to the solutions.
Supplemental Materials -

1. Quick Five Assessment - Google Form

2. Corrective Assignment

3. Practice Worksheet

4. Padlet Assignment - Chromebooks

Evaluation of the lesson -

To judge whether or not the lesson was successful, students will visit one of their classmates’ Padlet
websites. Students who completed the corrective assignment will have the ability to utilize the
resources attached to the Padlet page and complete the three practice problems. Students who
created the Padlet pages will then use their previously created answer keys to assess their
classmates’ solutions and make any corrections. I will use these assessments to find any procedural
or fluency mistakes. This will act as an anchor for the following topic on the volume of irregular three
dimensional shapes.
