What Factors Affect the Amount of Sleep You Get
Introduction
Our group decided to do research on what factors affect the amount of sleep you get. We
asked a wide-range of questions such as, how many hours of sleep do you get per night? On
average, how many ounces of caffeine do you consume daily? How many times do you work out
a week? When do you work out typically? Are you prescribed any medication(s) that affect(s)
your sleeping habits? How stressed are you from a scale from 1-5? In order to collect the data,
we utilized Google Doc Forms by creating a shared document file. Our groups research
Discussion
As you can we gathered our collected responses from our peers and have created a chart
which displays how many hours of sleep each individual receives. Based on the results, you can
see clearly 8 hours of sleep is the majority. But, 6 through 8 hours of sleep is the most common
as well. It was interesting how the 5 hour and 9 hours respondents almost have the same amount

Since caffeine is commonly known to energize our minds, our group first focused on
finding out who is and is not a regular caffeine drinker. The chart proves 79 individuals regularly
do drink caffeine. While the other 56 respondents answered that they are not a regular caffeine
consumer.
This graph displays the two comparisons of the average hours of sleep and the amount of
caffeine consumed daily by the respondent. As you can see, those who have indulged about 0
ounces to 20 ounces of caffeine daily, got the most amount of sleep which was just a little over 7
hours. Yet, it is interesting to see how the charts shows those who consumed up to 40 ounces of
caffeine received better sleep, rather than those who consumed about 30 ounces.

What Factors Affect the Amount of Sleep You Get
In this chart, we compared the average hours of sleep based off of what time the individual
usually works out at. We clearly found out that the time of the day does have an affect on our
sleeping pattern. For example, in the chart it shows that those who did work out late at night had
the lowest average of 6 hours. On the other hand, those who work out in the morning showed
results of an almost 7 hour average. Finally, those who never worked out averaged out with the

In this graph, it is displaying a comparison based off of the amount of times an individual
works out weekly. As we looked through how many times the respondents worked out a week,
those who work out 0 times a week, had an average around 7 1/2 hours and those who worked
out 9+ times a week, averaged at exactly 6 hours. Meanwhile for those who worked out 3-4
times weekly received an average a little under 7, this is the second most hours of sleep.
Our next factor was medication intake. Some individuals take medicine to help them sleep
while others take medicine that negatively affects their sleep. Respondents who do not take
medication to help them sleep averaged at around 7 hours. Respondents who do take medication
with sleep side effects, averaged out at 6 ½ hours. Respondents who take medication to help
them sleep, actually averaged at the lowest with was barely over 6 hours. This is very interesting

Finally, our last chart only clarifies more how stress has a huge impact on the average hours
of sleep we get each night. The stress level with the highest average hour of sleep was a 2, which
was the second lowest level is stress. Its average hours of sleep was 7.6 hours. The stress level
with the lowest average of sleep was a 5, which was “extremely stressed, the average was about
6.7 hours.

Analysis
When looking at our data within the charts displayed, we did not come to a clear
conclusion of which factor had the biggest impact on affecting the individual’s hours of sleep.
However, we have concluded that when the following factors become combined will imply a
larger effect on how much sleep they receive. According to the data, the highest average for each
of the factors seven hours which was not the most common amount of sleep; in fact, it was the
next most common. Overall, we found that eight hours of sleep was the most common. If our
group would do this again, we feel it would be important to ask if they do or do not work. Or ask
what are their work schedule hours like? Work plays a huge role in some of our lives. On the
other hand, on our stated questions we could have made them for specific. For instance, asking
the respondent if they are a regular caffeine drinker may be too broad. Instead, we could have
asked how many times a week do they drink caffeine as well as usually how many ounces each
week? In the creativity spectrum, our group feels it would have been more diverse if we had
chosen a different kind of graph. All in all, we hope our research has interested you.
