“Pre independence era in IIM K”

*give example of color patches in Nazi era
The law is being followed word to word but the reality is far from being rosy!

Timing is fine, worked in big consulting companies in metro cities for 5 years, still treated like
interns
Not sure about the future
Family life shift
Pay is less – no pf given –
They are treated as interns – after end of a contract they have an interview

CC: labour
Pay is less – 12000 per month, 600 rs increment – 2000 next increment – 2 increments in 7
years, lives as a bachelor, Calls at night for any IT issues, 6 days a week

CC: Head
No difference in contract and permanent, only pay difference in positions, 189 days contract
No bonus to anyone, its called “contract staff”; 6 days working for contract
Staff keeps changing so it is difficult to keep up and do not always get a good person

Hashim group:
Tag to wear – blue color – if you want to know who is on contract just see if they are wearing
tags
No dignity, respect – They are called “Nothings”. Asked “Who they are?”
Very less pay – least in all IIMs – no bonus given this year – earn only 15000/month –
permanent employees earn 30k plus benefits adding up to 70k but for contract people max
limit is 30k – even after 13 years of service , the pay is only 15k - no EPF - apart from base
pay, 2k rent and 300 telephone charges nothing else is given
7th pay commission – increase in salary and 5 days 8 hours working – but nothing was
provided to the TAs- in fact they still have 6 days 9-5.30 - even when they have no work on
saturday
People were willing to join IIM after sir told us the perks – no1 knows the other side of the
story
Time slots of lunch. “If it was up to them, they would even dictate our bathroom times”
Cannot use the facilities like gyms, ground etc.
Cannot move around the campus – guards ask them for the tags
Guards have more freedom than them – they formed a union and went to the ministry to
demand for higher wages – 20k per month
What is the use of studies – they are treated like interns
IN a management institute, we should learn practical financial management from the
permanent employees
Profs are supporting them – they asked why do they wear tags?
Good repo with prof and IIMK tag – Use for PHD
Central govt institutions find loopholes in the law and do not adhere to the law
They can easily fire them since people are willing to work for less money just for the IIM tag
Bonus: Till last year, permanent employees are given 35000 bonus whereas contract staff
were given 10000. But this year, they were not given any bonus at all while the permanent
employees are given 45000.

2 case studies:
1) A mail was sent which started with “Dear contract staff”. One of the TA replied back
saying it should be “staff on contract”. His contract was not renewed again
2) According to working laws, maternity leave should be provided 2 times to all
employees. Permanent employees are given the privilege 3 to 4 times whereas staff on
contract are asked to resign if they get pregnant

Storyline:
What looks flashy on the outside, need not be the same inside. A tough reality of one of the
most prestigious institutes of India. The university includes a mix of both permanent and
contract staff but the working conditions are poles apart.

Employees -> permanent staff; contract interns

For the health and welfare of contract labourers certain provisions have been made
mandatory by the Contract Labour Act such as safe drinking water, canteen facilities, first aid
facilities etc.
All the above minimum requirements has been strategically covered to minimise “cost”.
“We are not treated like human beings, but rather like machines”

Social security covers in terms of provident fund benefits and medical facilities need to be
also given to the contract employees. Neither are given here to TAs.
