MARKIING OUT
Timber: 200mm (Length)
80mm (High)
50mm (Wide)

Step 1: Mark Face side and

Face edge and put your
name on the piece.
Step 2: On the face
side, mark 60mm down
from the top, on the left
hand side of the piece.

Step 3: On the 60mm

point, mark in ten as
shown in the diagram.
60

10
Step 4: Using a tri square bring
the line from the 60mm point
across the front of the piece.

Step 5: From here measure in

10mm, mark a point and draw
your diagonal line once again.

Step 6: Mark on X’s for waste.

Step 7: Now on the right hand
75 side mark in 70mm.
Then come down 30mm
and mark in 60mm.
30
60
Step 9: With your point in from the right at
75mm draw a line across the face edge.

Step 8: Now bring your line at 30mm across and

measure in 60 and draw another line.
Step 10: Now mark
your X’s for waste
and you should be
left with the same as
the diagram.
Step 11: From the right hand
side again measure in 30mm,
mark a point then measure in
20mm from the point.
Now measure up
20mm from both points, as
shown in the diagram.

Step 12: Now bring your lines across
using the tri-square

Step 13: Measure up again 20mm and

draw your lines with the tri-square.

Step 14: Set your marking gauge to

20mm and scribe a line between the
xx two lines you just brought up.
x x
(remember to always put a dot on
either line with the marking gauge as
not to go past the line.)

This should form our trench

Finally this is
what our piece
of timber
x should look
x x like after
x x marking out
the main parts.
CUTTING
Step 1: We put our piece vertically
into the vice and cut down the 10mm
line, making sure to keep waste
side.

Step 2: We then put our piece

horizontally in the vice, but tilting it
slightly to get the diagonal line
straight as shown clearly in the
diagram.
Step 3: We now repeat the
process for the second part
of our cutting out
procedure. We first cut
straight down 60mm, not
going below the line and
keeping waste side once
again.

Step 4: Like in step 2 we tilt

our piece in the vice until
the diagonal line becomes
vertical. Then begin cutting,
keeping waste side.
We now flip our piece upside-down
to begin cutting the underside.

Step 5: Begin by cutting vertically

down both lines at 20mm, making
sure to keep waste side and not
going below the line.

In order to take out our trench we

will need to use a chisel.
To prevent breakout in a trench
Step 6: Begin chiselling at an angle up wards until
• Always chisel at an angle upwards
you reach the marking gauge line. Then repeat
• Only chisel half way then chisel in
process from the other side.
from the other side
Step 7: Now begin pairing the timber away until
you have a neat flat surface.
This is what your main
piece should look like after
all cutting is completed
BACK WHEELS

These next few parts will be given to you.

FRONT WHEELS
EXHAUST
We will be using 10mm dowels,
As there are so many holes to which means a 10mm drill be will be
drill, to speed up the process we required
will be using cordless drills.
Step 1: Measure 25mm on the
drill bit and put tape on it. This
will show you when you need
to stop drilling.

Step 2: Draw 2 diagonal lines

on both ends, from corner to
corner. This will give us the
centre point where we will be
drilling.
Step 3: Put the piece vertically
into the vice and begin drilling
until you reach the tape.

Make sure you are drilling

vertically down with the
cordless drill.

You should have a hole like in the

diagram.
Step 4: Put new tape on the
drill bit of measurement 20mm
this time.

Step 5: Repeat step 2 by

drawing diagonal lines to find
the centre. Once again put
your piece vertically in the vice
and drill until you reach the
tape.
Step 6: On face edge measure
50mm in from the left and
from the 50mm point,
measure in 15mm and mark a
point.

15 Step 7: Put tape on the drill

bit measuring 10mm and
50 begin drill the hole vertically,
until you reach the tape once
again.
Step 8: Measure down 20mm and
then from that point measure in
20 15mm, this will give us our centre
point of the circle.
15
Repeat the is process in from the
opposite side.

Step 9: Put tape on the drill bit

measuring 10mm

Step 10: Put the piece into the vice

and begin drilling vertically.
Your pieces should now
look like these.
Note that the wheels come
premade. They will have the
fillet and holed drilled.
We can now begin the gluing up
process.

Step 1: Piece 20mm X 20mm

should be placed into the trench,
leaving 20mm showing either side.

20 Step 2: The second piece should be

placed in 30mm from the front
showing again 20mm either side.

20 Clamp together, glue and leave

30 over night to set
Step 3: We can
now glue in all the
dowels, clamp them
and allow to set
once again
Step 4: Finally the last thing we
have to do is to fit the wheels. We
do not need to glue on the
wheels as we want them to spin.

We have now completed the

process of our tractor, I hope
you have enjoyed making our
project and your end product
should look like the diagram to
the left.
