GAME COMMISSION ANNOUNCES FALL PHEASANT
STOCKING PLANS
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Game Commission has
slated 108,000 ring-necked pheasants for release on public
lands throughout the Commonwealth for the upcoming small
game hunting seasons, including 16,800 birds for the junior
only season (Oct. 9-16).
“Based on agency’s budget cuts first implemented in the
2004-05 fiscal year and carried forward since, we reduced our
pheasant propagation program by 50 percent,” said Carl G.
Roe, Game Commission executive director. “Reducing the
pheasant propagation program has saved the agency more
than one million dollars. Without a hunting license fee
increase, we expect to continue producing at the 100,000-bird
level.
“Despite the overall reductions, this year our game farm
staff had an excellent production season. They have worked
hard with limited resources to achieve the goal to have more
than 100,000-birds available for stocking this fall’s junior and
regular pheasant seasons.”
The region staff will begin the stocking season Oct. 8,
when the agency will release 15,000 birds (8,640 males and
6,490 females) for the junior pheasant hunt scheduled for Oct
9-16. A listing of stocking locations for the youth hunt can be
found on pages 25-27 of the 2010-11 Pennsylvania Digest of
Hunting and Trapping Regulations, which is provided to each
license buyer.
Another 1,800 pheasants have been allocated for those
clubs sponsoring mentored pheasant hunts for juniors on Oct.
9. (For more information on those clubs participating, please
see News Release #088-10.)
Opening day of the general pheasant hunting season is
Oct. 23, and closes on Nov. 27. Pre-season stocking of
pheasants in each region will begin Oct. 20, followed by the
first and second in-season stockings on Oct. 28 or 29, and Nov.
4 or 5. A third in-season stocking will be conducted, on Nov. 10,
in areas surrounding the Somerset, Central Susquehanna and
Hegins-Gratz Valley Wild Pheasant Recovery Areas. Only male
pheasants are legal game in Wildlife Management Units
(WMUs) 2A, 2B, 2C, 4C, 4E, 5A and 5B. Male and female
pheasants are legal game in all other WMUs.
This year, the late season is scheduled for Dec. 13-23 and
Dec. 27-Feb. 5, for Wildlife Management Units 1A, 1B, 2D, 2E,
2F, 2G, 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D, 4A, 4B, 4D, 5C and 5D. A late season
stocking will take place on Dec. 17, and male and female
pheasants are legal game in these WMUs. All other WMUs are
closed during these dates.
“We are holding these birds to be released as close as
possible to the holiday season so youth can take advantage of
going afield during their school break and some businesses
close down for the holidays as well,” Roe said.

OLEAN GENERAL HOSPITAL AND FOUNDATION
CELEBRATE COMPLETION OF OB AND NURSERY
RENOVATION PROJECT FUNDED BY THE COMMUNITY
OLEAN, NY-Olean General Hospital hosted a special
ceremony to celebrate the completion of a major renovation
and expansion project of its Obstetrical (OB) Unit and
Nursery. The project was funded entirely by gifts from the
community.
According to Timothy J. Finan, President and CEO of Olean
General Hospital and parent company Upper Allegheny
Health System, significant renovation projects like this are
examples of the community's "gifts at work" in the hospital.
$800,000 in gifts from the community were received by the
Foundation.
Karen Fohl, President of the Olean General Hospital
Foundation said "The significance of this project is not just
that we were able to make this such a special place for babies
to be born, and to improve the patient experience, but that it
drew together so much generosity in the community."
During the ceremony, donors who made contributions of
$10,000 or more were recognized with plaques located next to
patient rooms. Additionally, everyone who made a donation,
regardless of the amount, was recognized with a special public
'thank you' for helping make the department renovations
possible.
Olean General's OB department has consistently achieved
99% patient satisfaction scores for quality of clinical care, but
the physical space had not been renovated since 1991. During
that time, nearly 15,000 babies had been born on the unit.
In April 2010, Olean General Hospital began a significant
expansion and renovation of the department to accommodate
an increase in the number of babies being delivered, and to
make both mothers and newborns more comfortable. The
renovations were also designed to allow physicians and nurses
the ability to perform their clinical duties with greater
efficiency. The project was completed by Duggan & Duggan
General Contractors in Allegany, New York along with the
hospital's Facilities team.
The completed project tripled the size of the nursery by
adding 600 additional square-feet and expanded the area to
accommodate 14 newborn bassinets. Additionally, the nurses
station was updated and unit corridors were renovated with
new lighting and flooring. All patient rooms were similarly
renovated and provided new furniture.
"Family-centered care is an essential part of the birthing
experience at Olean General Hospital," said Mary Beyth, RN,
manager of the OB department. "So all 14 postpartum rooms
now feature new patient beds, furniture, oak-trimmed
bassinets and sleep chairs to accommodate both mothers and
babies, as well as visiting family members and supporters."
Stromberg Artwork Featured at CCMH
Joan Stromberg of Port Allegany has a variety of artwork on display
at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital's Irwin Medical Arts Center as part
of the hospital's Community Art Showcase.
Stromberg has been painting all her life and prefers painting barns,
landscapes and flowers using watercolors and oils. "I like looking out
the window and painting what I see." Her work has been displayed at the
John White Studio in Coudersport, the annual art show in Port Allegany
and the Meadville Fine Arts Show. She has won several blue ribbons and
best of show awards. "Painting is my way of preserving an important
part of our heritage."
The Community Art Showcase features artists for about six to eight
weeks. The project has featured Jessie Vaughn of Ulysses, Karen Wolf of
Sweden Township, Pat Bosworth of Port Allegany, Alyson Leach, Leslie
Kelley, and Suzan Richar of Galeton, Curt Weinhold, Naomi Keller,
Heather Chilson, Lindsey Francis, and Maxine Shear of Coudersport,
Mercedes Schwartz of Smethport, and Oswayo Valley students Jody
Osburn, Elizabeth Coyle, Megan Mesler and Jenna Maxson, according
to chairperson Betty Wei.
"It's a way for area residents to enjoy the talent and creativity of local
artists and the hospital family is thrilled to make this opportunity
possible," she said.

Starting Your Own Business
Some people who are unemployed and haven’t found a job have
taken another path and started their own businesses. If this is your

Becoming Your Own Boss” (Alpha/Penguin Group, $18.95) leads
readers through all the steps to successful entrepreneurial ventures.
Author Danielle Babb has both a Ph.D. (in Organization and
Management) and an MBA (in Information Technology).
One of the first things to learn is whether self-employment is really
for you. Are you motivated enough? Babb doesn’t hold back with the
truths, one of which is that running your own business is hard work. A
lot of that work comes at the beginning when you:
• Write a business plan. Who will your customers be? How will you
get through that first year when many new businesses fail? How will you
