Lesson Plan

Lesson : d-Block Elements (II)

Aim :

To study the formation and nomenclature of complex ions of the transition elements.

Learning Outcomes :

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to :

• define the terms complex ion and ligand

• classify ligands as monodentate or polydentate

• explain the formation of complex ions by ligand exchange

• name complex ions.

Assumed prior knowledge :

Students should already be familiar with :

1. the concept of coordinate bonds

2. the electronic configuration of the first row d-block elements.

Underlying Principles

1. Making the invisible, visible.

2. Enabling students to know what to look for.

Differentiation

Questions in the student notes are designed to enable all students to complete the activity.
The pop-up answers are provided for the students to view when they have considered their
responses. Worksheet questions include questions that require recall, understanding and
application of the new concepts learned.

with the students.

Activity 1 : Formation of complex ions

Students get to view how a complex ion is

formed when a transition metal ion gets
bonded to other molecules or ions by
coordinate bonds. They also get to see a
few examples of monodentate and
polydentate ligands, and study the
concept of coordination number of the
central ion in transition metal complexes.

Activity 2 : Nomenclature

Students learn how to name complex

ions.

3 Evaluation • Students to answer questions in the • Worksheet

4 Extension activity • Students to read up reference materials • References

on their own.
