Editor’s Note

This guide will show you a small amount of plays I collected from Zalgiris
Playoff series versus Olympiacos. I am an amateur coach myself and
Sarunas Jasikevicius is surely one of the coaches you look forward to
watch and learn. The spacing, the timing, and the substitutions on the right
time; but mostly how he managed to take the 100% out of every player he
had. Seems like every play he drew on board magically came to life on the
court.

Excuse me for any grammar or vocabulary mistakes.

I want to dedicate this guide to coach Kostas Kalogeropoulos who really

helped me approach scouting more professional.

My name is Konstantinos Panas and I am an amateur coach and writer. I like to scout
players and teams for my personal training and fun. Hope you like this guide and

1 - 4 Low stack Formation
3 DHO with 1.
4 flashes to the high post faking a side pick-
n-roll and suddenly clear out the middle for
1 & 5 to run the middle pick-n-roll. The flat
angle ball screen is to give a clear left path
for the ball handler.

1- 4 Low stack (2)

3 faking a ball screen for 2 and curls
down the left corner.
5 sets a pindown screen for 1 who
receives the ball and run the pick-n-roll
with 5.
Post Up Motion
1-4 low stack formation
4 flashes to the high post and receives the ball from 1.
3 sets a cross screen for 5 who receives the ball from 4.
4 sets a flare screen for 1.
5 DHO to 1.
This play gives options for a)post up for 5 b)freeing up 1 for a clear shot c) side pick-n-roll thru
DHO.

1 -4 High stack
Basic UCLA movement that Zalgiris used to
post up versus Spanoulis. Usually ended up
with a side pick-n-roll with 5.
1-4 High Stack Iverson
2 wide cuts to the other corner freeing up
player’s 3 movement.
3 Iverson cuts through 4 and 5.
5 sets a hard screen for 3 who curls around and
cuts to the basket.
1 passes to 4 who passes to 3.
Mostly played for Arturas Milaknis.

3 “Down”
4 Iverson cuts to the opossite side.
5 and 3 clears out the strong side.
1 runs a side pick-n-roll with 4.
Mostly played through Paulius Jankunas for a
corner cut.
Diamond set
3 runs the pick-n-roll with 4 who flares out to the opposite wing.
3 DHO to 1 and goes to the wing.
2 starts the zipper cut and gets staggered screens from 3 and 5.
Basic play for Arturas Milaknis.

Lithuanian Pick-n-Roll Pin Down

1 runs the pick-n-roll with 4 who pops out and recieves the pass. 1 cuts down the
corner.
4 DHO to 3 and cuts near the elbow.
5 flashes to the top of the key and recieves the pass from 3 who cuts down the corner.
5 DHO with 1.
4 sets a pindown screen for 2 who recieves a pass for an open shot.
Mostly run for Arturas Milaknis.
2 sets a shuffle screen for 4 who gets to the low post and recieves the pass from 1.
1 cuts down the opposite corner.
2 set a down screen for 5 who flashes to the high post and recives the pass from 4.
3 zipper cuts to the opposite corner.
5 DHO with1 to run the spain pick-n-roll

3 Iverson cuts thru 4 and 5 and receives the pass from 1

who UCLA cuts thru the low post.

1 moves to the side and 2 curls around player 5 who

pins down for player 3 for an open shot. This type of
movement with a guard curling around a big man’s
screen in the top of the key was a success due to the
type of defense Olympiacos was playing at this moment.
X2 wasn’t able to fight over the screen so X3 had to
 help forcing X5 to go along two players. The
screener(player 5) and the shooter(player 3).
Hammer Play
3 stays on top of the key so he can give a clear path
to player 1. Player 5 sets a flat ball screen opposite
the right side so he can give player 1 the spacing he
needed. Player 4 sets the hammer screen for player
2 who gets an open shot. Mantzaris was overplaying
Milaknis who is player 2 on the board. But player X4
who was Printezis was helping on Pangos(player 1)
drive and so player 4 could easily set the screen for Milaknis to free him up.

SLOB Stagger
4 & 5 set staggered screens for 2 who gets open for
a shot. If 2 doesn’t get open 4,1 & 3 will clear out the
court for 2 & 5 to run a side pick-n-roll.

Diamond Set Choice screens

2 exits either on one wing or another and 3 cuts on
the opposite corner. If 2 doesn’t get open he can run
the side pick-n-roll with the opposite big man.
Milaknis used to boomerang pass and quickly zipper
cut on the opposite wing who might got staggered
screens set.
 1-4 Low stack Spain
1 & 5 run the high pick-n-roll and 3 screens for player’s
5 defender.

BLOB
All three players on the line cut to the opposite side and 3 goes to the ball side’s corner.
2 sets a power screen for 4 who cuts near the basket and then gets screener from 5 for
an open shot.

Diamond set Choice

Again on Diamond formation and choice screens for
player 2. This time player 3 cuts on the same side. The
opposite big man set a flare screen for 1 who receives
the ball for either an open shot or a side pick-n-roll.
Zalgiris ran this play with Spain side pick-n-roll.
Diamond Set backdoor
Again thru diamond set and choice screens for player 2. A play especially for Aaron
White. Player 2 got off player’s 5 side and received a pass from player 1. Boomerang
pass from 2 back to 1. 2 set a back screen for player 4 who goes backdoor and receives
and alley hoop pass.

1 dribbles to the side and 5 flashes to the high post. 1 and 4 set choice screens for 3
who can either go to the middle or the baseline. He receives a hand off pass from player
5 for either an open shot or a dribble drive action.
5 flashes and receives a pass from 2 who cuts down the left corner.
5 DHO with 3.
4 & 5 set staggered screens for 1 for an open shot. If he doesn’t get open 5 dives near
the paint and 4 cuts near the corner.

Iverson Post Up
3 Iverson cuts thru 4 & 5 and receives the
pass from 1.
2 sets a power screen for 4 and exits to the
left wing.
3 passes to 4 on the low block.
Iverson Elevator
Same movement as before only this time 2 doesn’t set a screen but gets an elevator
screen from 4 & 5.

Quick Hitter
2 cuts deep clearing the side.
1 & 4 run the high pick-n-roll.
4 slips & 5 sets a very high back screen.
4 receives the alley hoop pass.
Common spain pick-n-roll motion only this
time 5 set the screen so he can get his man
outside the paint.
Zalgiris hit with this play on 16 seconds with
Aaron White.
1 moves to the side after the ball screen from 5.
5 sets a down screen for 2 to free him up.
Played for Arturas Milaknis.

2 “down”
1 runs the pick-n-roll with 4.
4 cuts deep on the opposite corner.
1 DHO with 2 and goes near the paint.
3 zipper cuts and get staggered screens from 1 & 5.
 Diamond hi-low
Diamond formation.
2 & 3 double exit.
4 flashes to the high post and receives the pass
from1.
5 goes strong in the middle and receives the pass
from 4.

Side Zipper
5 sets a side zipper screen for 4 who receives the pass from 1.
5 sets the back screen for 1 who cuts down the left corner.
4 DHO with 2 and pops out.
2 & 5 runs the pick-n-roll.
Ram
3 exits and receives the pass from 1 who cuts down the right corner.
2 sets a ram screen for 5 who runs the side pick-n-roll with 3.
Mostly played for Edgaras Ulanovas to free his left side and give him space to dribble
drive.
