Lesson Plan Guide

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:


● The book we will be reading will be showing technology advantages over time is our classroom story of
the week. Students will read and we will discuss and then complete test for understanding and
knowledge
● The goal of this lesson is for students to explore how Tennessee was before and how it is now because
of the technology advancing so much. Students will use visual representation to test their comprehension
of the story. Students will comprehend details from the video as well as the story and arrange images.
Civic efficiency requires understanding rights and responsibilities, ethical behavior, and the role of
citizens within their community, nation, and world as described in the TN state social studies standard
4.0

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Given video of America/Tennessee government when it was first discovered and the improvements till now,
students will discuss in groups and arrange pictures according to differences on the computer with 80% accuracy.
● Given book on advantages Tennessee has made as well as technology improvements, the students will make a
table showing technology’s progress over time with 80% accuracy.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
● State/District and/or Common Core standards: TN Social Studies - 4.4.02 Describe the Constitution of
the United States and the Tennessee State Constitution in principle and practice.

● 2.23 Compare the branches of Tennessee’s government to the national government.

MATERIALS:
● 1. Pencil

● Technology: internet access, software, hardware, websites
● Technology will integrated into this lesson by first allowing students watch a video, then sending them to
the computer to complete a virtual activity to further their understanding and memory of the changes Tennessee
has made. Students will also make a table showing a few items that have been advanced due to technology by
showing an image before and after. A student sample can be found below.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
● Students will demonstrate a clear understanding that the Tennessee government has advanced and the
differences in the state government and the national government. They will learn how the technology we
have today was not around when Tennessee was founded and how much it has advanced and changed.
● Academic language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
● This lesson is a continuation TN social studies standard 4.0
● This lesson connects to other lessons by familiarizing the students with the changes in technology over
time right in their home state. They will learn more about technological advantages over time, this is
assignment breaks down advantages made in a way they can understand.
● We will use government in other lessons to make sure the students know the branches and the difference
in state and national government. We will use technology in other lessons by teaching them more about
the technology today and the progress it has made.
● The lessons can be differentiated for enriched students by allowing them to do extra work and research
on Tennessee’s government to present to the class. The students who have disabilities will still be able to
learn by given easier assessment and I will explain the books to them on an easier level to the side if
necessary.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:


● Introduction: I will begin the lesson by engaging the students in a discussion on what was the
technology we had when Tennessee was first discovered. I will display pictures of Tennessee when it
was first founded on the large screen overhead. I will also give background information on Tennessee
and the technology and answer any questions at this point.
● Procedures:

● Closure (10 mins): After all activities have been collected allow students to discuss further comments
or questions they may have. For a discussion question I will ask students to share what they thought was
the biggest difference in government and how the biggest technology advancement helped achieve the
government’s improvements. Let students express their own thoughts on the activity. To close let
students know that it is very important to be able to differentiate the privileges of state and federal
government and how technology has helped us be able to make the changes necessary to advance our
civilization, but not to worry if they did not master this we will continue to go over this in the future.

● I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those
ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this
particular lesson.
