THE PLOWSHARES
May 2018
Luke 4:18-19

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed

me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to
proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to
the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year
of the Lord’s favor.”

Anointed to Bring Good News

God has planted in my heart a vision for ministry that emphasizes outreach to our
surrounding hurting communities. As we see and recognize our many blessings as a church and as
people who have an abundance of gifts, love, faith, and resources, we must also recognize that we
have a responsibility with these blessings from God. In Luke 12:48 Jesus says, “From everyone to
whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been
entrusted, even more will be demanded.” We are called to use our blessings for the sake of the
Gospel, called to be ambassadors of Christ's love, and disciples who go and make other disciples.
However, we must first recognize the many ways in which we are blessed and the gifts that the Holy
Spirit has given each of us.

In the coming months the leadership of the church will be developing a way for you to assess
your God-given gifts so that you might better use your gifts for God’s glory. From personal
experience, I know that I didn’t realize the many gifts God had given me until other people
recognized those gifts in me. I want you to know that you are gifted by God and have a part to play
in God’s perfect plan. You may not know your God-given gifts but you are truly gifted. You have
power and wisdom from God to do his will and accomplish his work.

Our well-worn pews, jolly laughter, hearty feasting, and joyous singing may be sources of
comfort for us, but we may become so comfortable that it becomes challenging for us to step out in
faith and be like Jesus. However, we are called to go into the most uncomfortable of places, to be
where the pain and suffering of others is the reality. Christ went into the places of pain, loneliness,
oppression, famine, violence, and with him he brought the healing love of God. He welcomed
people from those places to experience the love of God and to be a part of a community of faith.
May we go and do likewise.

With the love of Christ,

Pastor Eric
