How to turn your portraits into pop art using

Photoshop CS3!
These instructions will show you how to create pop art using Adobe
Photoshop CS3. You will be able to transform ordinary photos into pieces of
art.

These instructions are for those who are familiar with a PC.

Part I: Uploading an Image in Photoshop CS3


1. Open Adobe
Photoshop.

2. Click File , select


Open.

A window
should appear with
options to
locate your file.

3. Locate picture to
upload, select
picture file, click
Open.

Part II: Preparing Foundation Layers


1. Click Layers tab on
palette.

If palette is
not visible, go to
Window and
select Layers to
access
palette.

2. Highlight layer
called Background.
3. Click Layer, select
Duplicate Layer.

A window
should appear with
the option to
name the new layer.
4. Rename the new
layer “Dots” and
click OK.

A new layer
named “Dots”
should
appear in the layers
palette.

5. Click Layer,
highlight New, select
Layer.

A window
should appear with
the option to
name the new layer.

6. Name new layer


“Blue” and click OK.

A new layer
named “Blue
should
appear in the layers
palette. This
layer will become
your
background color.
Any color can be
used in this layer.
For
demonstration
purposes, we
will be using the
color blue.
7. Highlight “Blue”
layer on layer
palette.

8. Select Paint Bucket


Tool located on the
Tools palette.

If palette is
not visible, go to
Window and
select Tools.

9. Click on Set
Foreground Color
option located on
Tools palette.
10. The Color Picker
window should
appear. Select color
and click OK.

11. Move the Paint


Bucket tool over the
picture and click to
fill with color.

12. Drag “Blue” layer


between the two
existing layers. Your
palette should now
look like the image
to the right.

13. Highlight “Dots”


layer. Select Pen
Tool located on the
Tools palette. Make
sure the pen tool is
set to create a Work
Path by clicking on
the option in the
toolbox located in
the top left corner of
the screen. Also,
select the Add to
Path Area option
located at top of the
screen.
14. Use the Pen Tool to
create a path around
the object you wish
to isolate. Click and
drag to create a line.
For best results,
make small, frequent
lines. If you wish to
delete your work
path and start over,
right-click on path
and select Delete
Path.

15. Right-click on the


Pen Tool on the
Tools palette to
reveal further tools.

16. Close your Work


Path. Your last
anchor point must
meet up to your first
anchor point. Click
on first Anchor
Point.
17. Right-click on your
Work Path and
select Make
Selection. Click OK.

PART 3: Creating Outline Layer


1. Rename “Background”
layer “Dots”
This is to
differentiate between
different types of
layers and avoid
confusion

2. Click Image, highlight


Adjustments and select
Desaturate

3. Click Image, highlight


Adjustments and select
Threshold
4. Adjust Threshold
according to selected
image
This is to
emphasize the different
facial
characteristics of the
portrait

5. Click Filter, highlight


Blur, select Gaussian
Blur
A pop-up
window should appear
with the option
to adjust pixilation

6. In the Radius box type


1.2
7. Right-Click “Dots” layer
in the Layers Palette and
select Duplicate Layer
8. Select New and press OK
This should open
up a new
document

9. Click Image, highlight


Mode, and select
Grayscale

10.Click Discard
11.Click Image, highlight
Mode, and select
Bitmap
A flatten layers
pop window will
appear

12.Click OK

13.Select Halftone Screen,


click OK
A Halftone
Screen pop up screen
should appear

14.In the Frequency box


type 12
15.In the Angle box type 45

16.In the Shape box select


Round

17.Click OK

Part 4: Adding Color Using Layers


A. Making a layer for a single color

1. Highlight “Dots” layer

2. Click on Layer, Select


Duplicate Layer
Rename this layer
“White”

3. Working on “White”
layer, Click Image, select
Adjustments

4. Select
Brightness/Contrast
Set the brightness to
100, and
Adjust contrast until
image is white.

*Layers palette should look like this.


5. On layers palette change
blend mode from Normal
to Multiply
“Dots” layer
should be selected

6. Click on Create New Fill


or Adjustment Layer
icon at the bottom of the
layer palette.

7. Select Solid color

8. Select the color red from


the color picker
dialogue box that
appears.
We have chosen
the color red for
her lips. You will
be able to change
the color easily
later if desired

9. Right click on new layer


to rename the layer

10. Rename the layer “Lips”


11. Drag “lips” layer below
“dots” layer on palette.

12. Create a clipping path


between the “Lips” and
“White” layer
Refer to Part 4,
section B for
instructions on
creating a clipping
path.

13. Change foreground color


to black in “Lips” layer.

14. Click on Paint Bucket


tool
15. Fill “Lips” layer black
Later remember
that for each new
color layer you
will fill it black.

16. Change foreground color


back to white

17. Click on Paint Brush


tool

18. Paint where you want


the pink color to appear
For more accuracy
zoom into image
by clicking View
and selecting
Zoom In.

B. Making layers for all


colors in picture

1. Repeat Part 4, step A and


create a new fill layer for
each color.
Note that clipping
layers are used in
all new fill layers.
