Corporate Responsibility Policy

At Big Heart Pet Brands we nurture the bond between pets and the people who love them—
making every day special.

Our corporate responsibility policy outlines how we advance our commitment to the well-being
of pets and people and to the protection of the environment in which they live. Supported by a
robust corporate governance structure and the company’s senior management, our attention to
this policy enables us to deliver on our purpose.

We recognize that our performance must be considered in the broader context of the world in
which we operate. In order to accomplish our objectives, we need the support and participation
of investors, consumers, customers, suppliers, regulators, employees, and community
members. We engage with these stakeholders to ensure that we are addressing issues that are
most important to them and to our Company. We also form strong, strategic working
partnerships that align with our values, advance our business goals, and contribute to the
advancement of the society in which humans and their pets live, work, and play.

We also understand the importance of company leadership at the executive and board level to
guide our efforts in ways that balance the consideration of pets, people, and planet. We
recognize that our performance in these areas is intrinsically tied to long-term financial success.
As such, we seek to explicitly link corporate responsibility with core strategic objectives.

Pets. We believe in loving pets, and therefore we are passionate about providing safe, healthy,
and high-quality pet food and treats. We design our portfolio of loved brands to offer the widest
variety of food and snacks for dogs and cats to satisfy the needs and wants of all pet parents.
 Pet food safety and quality. Big Heart Pet Brands top priority is the safety and quality of
our products. Our goal is to produce the finest pet food products available on the market
today. All of our products are made under a system of strict food safety and quality
controls combined with ongoing inspection and monitoring. All of our programs are
designed to exceed the Global Food Safety Initiative standards. Our products are made
with nutritious, quality ingredients that meet the applicable standards and specifications of
the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Association of American Feed Control
Officials (AAFCO) and the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Each of our products is
processed and packaged following strict food safety and quality control procedures that
comply with the Good Manufacturing Practices established by the FDA. These procedures
ensure that the resulting food will be pure, wholesome and safe for pets.
We have a rigorous supplier approval process in place and only purchase ingredients from
reputable suppliers who agree to meet all of our requirements. Our supplier management
program includes an extensive evaluation of all manufacturing locations prior to approval.
Once approved, a comprehensive testing program is in place to assess the safety and
quality of the ingredients upon receipt. This includes a combination of laboratory analysis
and physical inspection of the ingredients.

To verify the on-going effectiveness of our programs, we utilize a three-tier auditing
approach. This employs the vast experience of internal scientists as well as the expertise
of third party auditors to evaluate our programs.
 Nutrition. Pets have complex nutritional needs. We develop our pet food and pet treats to
meet those needs, considering individual breeds, sizes, and age. We constantly strive to
provide healthy foods based on the most current scientific knowledge. Each product is
developed under the direct supervision of pet nutritionists, veterinarians, and food
scientists to ensure that it meets the essential needs of pets. Our pet food and pet treats
reward the mind, body and spirit of pets and the people who love them.
 Innovation. We have built our product portfolio to give pets and their pet parents access
to a wide variety of tasty, healthy food and treats. Our brands are well known and trusted
in the marketplace, and we invest in research and development to continually improve our
product offerings.

People. We are a people-driven organization committed to the well-being of our employees,

pets and their families, and the communities in which we live and work.
 Employee safety, health, and wellness. Everyone has a right to be safe at work.
Keeping our employees safe is a top priority, and we adhere to applicable laws pertaining
to employee health and safety. We aim to be proactive with our safety program by
studying trends in the workplace while also providing training to empower employees to
help ensure their safety and that of others. Additionally, we will work to create an
environment that encourages and supports employees in managing and improving their
health and wellness through preventative care and work-life balance.
 Employee development and retention. At Big Heart Pet Brands, employee growth and
development is critical to our success. We believe that employee development is the
foundation for empowering employees to succeed and building a high performance
culture.
We leverage annual Talent Reviews to guide development priorities for our salaried
employees. Managers and employees discuss career aspirations and talent assessment
feedback to guide concrete development actions to help employees develop and improve
business performance.
 Diversity and inclusion. We believe that we are more creative and innovative within our
teams and for our customers when we actively solicit and include diverse perspectives and
different ways of thinking. Our Diversity and Inclusion commitment statement reflects how
we value a diverse and inclusive work environment connecting how we work with our
purpose: “At Big Heart Pet, we ‘Show our Heart’ by seeking Diversity in all respects,
inspiring individual contribution and working Inclusively in teams to win together.
Through Inclusion, we listen and do what matters to realize our Purpose – nurturing
the bond between pets and the people who love them.”
 Community giving and volunteerism. Showing our hearts to people and the pets that
love them is the focus of our “Heart to Paw” Giving Program. In addition to an employee-
led grant program, we support employee giving through our corporate matching program,
in which we provide an increased match for pet organizations. We match donations to

We establish, communicate, and monitor criteria and codes of conduct for our suppliers to

labor standards.

Planet. We strive to minimize the impact of our operations by reducing energy intensity,
materials and water consumption, and waste generation in our operations. We work to ensure
the lasting productivity of our supply chain, because a healthy natural environment is essential
to sourcing the ingredients and materials we need.
We have a well-established environmental program that guides our stewardship efforts. Our
environmental management system, which is aligned with ISO 14001 principles, sets out
rigorous guidelines and processes to ensure that our facilities meet the highest standards of
environmental performance, every day. We view full compliance with all applicable regulations
as a minimum goal, and we strive to exceed industry standards across our operations.
 Climate and energy. We believe that greenhouse gas emissions have a significant impact
on the environment. As such, we are committed to reducing energy intensity and
associated carbon emissions in our manufacturing processes, transportation and logistics
operations, office buildings, and in our supply chain. We aim to reduce our total emissions
every year from a set baseline, both with regard to absolute reductions and reductions
measured against operational productivity.
 Water. Water is a precious resource, and minimizing the amount of water used in our
manufacturing and office facilities is a high priority. We will periodically establish our
baseline water use and set goals for optimizing water consumption. We support the
achievement of water reduction goals through ongoing implementation of water
conservation, reuse, and recycling technologies.

zero-waste-to-landfill company. We will use the rethink–reduce–reuse–recycle waste
hierarchy to help us identify opportunities to eliminate waste.
 Packaging. We seek to minimize the life-cycle impacts of our products and packaging by
taking environmental design considerations into account, including using recycled and
recyclable material, eliminating excess packaging, optimizing packing space, and working
with suppliers to develop innovative packaging solutions. We also seek to engage pet
parents in raising awareness of recycling options for used packaging.
 Responsible sourcing. We believe that, to minimize supply-chain related impacts to the
environment, our products must be ethically sourced. We require our suppliers to act in an
environmentally responsible manner and comply with all applicable regulations. Where
appropriate, we secure environmental sourcing certifications and communicate our
adherence to certification standards to our stakeholders.
