Questionnaire Review:

Q1. Do the button in my finished product work?

Do the buttons in my finished product work?

90%

Yes No

Comments:

• “When you click outside the box it goes to a different page.”

• “Rollover buttons work completely.”
• “Good use of rollovers.”
• “Yes, is works very well.”

Reflection:

One person said that the buttons didn’t always work if you clicked on them, this is because the
buttons where a diamond shape but in Photoshop they were in a square. This meant that,
although the background was transparent, that part was still considered to be part of the
buttons. To improve, I could have created the buttons on their side and then rotated them in
Director to look right. This could solve the problem.

Q2. Does the music work?

Comments:

• “Chilled”
• “Calming”
• “Yes, it sounds good”
• “Well fitting music”
• “Unique tune”
• “Works throughout”

Reflection:

The choice of music seems to have been successful.

Q3. Do the videos work?

Do the videos work?

Yes No

Comments:

• “Not on this machine – no Quick Time”

• “N/A – No Quick Time”
• “Yes, with working buttons”
• “Could be a little larger”
• “Good videos”
• “Yeah, the play and pause works”

Reflection:

I need to make sure that I show people the CD-ROM on a computer that has Quick Time so that
they can watch the videos. Also, I could re-arrange the layout of the pages to give the videos
more space so that they can be larger. For example, I could have the two images at the bottom
and two images at the top and then the video to one side in the middle with the text on the
other side.

Q4. Do the rollovers work?

Do the rollovers work?

Yes No

Comments:

• “Yes, however not many image rollovers”

• “Could use more rollovers on the information section”
• “I liked the presentation”
• “Yes, they look good”

Reflection:

On the information pages, I should have included rollovers on the four images. This would
mean that I could include more rollovers and more images showing the places which may
increase peoples interest in the places.

Q5. Do you think that the pages are consistent?

Comments:

• “The layout was very well planned”

• “Yeah, they look good”
• “Themed”
• “Interesting, engaging, lots to see”

Reflection:

The consistency of the pages seems to have been kept throughout the CD-ROM.

Q6. Do you think that the finished product looks professional?

Yes No

Comments:

• “I would say semi-professional”

• “Professional looking design”
• “Better than most ads”
• “As good as anything on TV advertisement”

Reflection:

To make the CD-ROM look more professional I could have included more rollovers, or more
image transitions, or more animations.

Q7. Does the close button work?

Does the close button work?

100%

Yes No

Comments:

• “However, it’s on the opening page”

• “Looks like more of a back button than a close button”
• “Close button looks good”
• “Close button fully working”
• “Yes, but it isn’t on every page”
• “Fine”

Reflection:

I could have put the words ‘close’ on the close button so that it didn’t look like a back button. I
also could have put in a home button that would take the user back to that page to close the
CD-ROM. I could have also put the close button on the contents page instead of the splash
page. Or I could have put a close button on every page.

Q8. Any other comments that you would like to make about the finished product?

Comments:

• “Interesting and entertaining. A lot to see and explore”

• “Good fun”
• “It looks very good, just need a consistent close button throughout”
• “I like the button design’s”
• “It looks very good; however, I would have chosen a more stylish font.”
• “None at the moment”
• “Good product that works well”
• “Everything looks great”

Reflection:

Over all, the feedback is fairly positive, however I could have put a close button on every page
and I could have used amore interesting font on the information pages.

Compared with Original Intentions:

Compared to my original intentions, my CD-ROM is fairly accurate. The splash

page is exactly as I had planned on my storyboards. The buttons are slightly
different, they do not have any text on them, but instead they have icons of
doors with arrows pointing in and out.

Compared to my original intentions, the contents page is very different.

On the story boards the buttons titles are 'Things to do', 'Places to go'
and 'Things to see'. On the CD-ROM, the titles go 'Places to go', 'Things
to see', and 'Things to do'. The 'Things to see' button has a picture of
the globe on it and not a flower. The 'Places to go button' has a picture
of Portmeirion on it and not a picture of the
globe. The contents page has the back
button on the lower left-hand side if the screen instead of being in
the lower right-hand side of the screen. Instead of having four
images lining the bottom of the stage, I instead put a Gif of a
compass in the lower right-hand corner of the screen.

Compared to my original intentions, the sub contents page is

almost exactly the same as the story boards,
however the back button is not in the lower
right-hand side of the screen. The back button is on the lower left-hand
side of the screen instead. Also, the back button only has an arrow on it
and it does not have any text on it.

Compared to my original intentions, the information pages are very

similar to my story boards. The text box is slightly smaller and the back
button is on the lower left-hand side of the screen. The video is directly on the right-hand side
of the screen and the play and pause buttons are next to the left-hand side of the video.

• Fitness for Purpose:

Overall, the fitness for purpose is good. It has a light

background that does not drown out the features on the
page.

Although the background is blue, the CD-ROM is not gender

specific so that both males and females can use it. The blue
background is supposed to represent the sky and there is a
flying theme throughout the CD-ROM. This helps to advertise
the travel company.

The CD-ROM contains a lot of multimedia features such as rollovers, animations, videos,
buttons, sound, and text. However, I could have put a close button on every page or a
home button to make it easier for the user to close it down. Although I included
rollovers on all the navigation buttons, I could have also included rollovers on the four
images on the information pages. This would have made these pages more
interesting, it would have made them more interactive, it would have allowed me to
include more rollovers, and it would have allowed me to include more images of the places
to create more interest around them.

All the text can be read, which means that there is not useless text that may be miss read or
unreadable. When I did my questionnaires, someone wrote that I should have used more
stylish font. I could have changes the font in the text boxes to something that was more
interesting to look at and still readable.

• Technical Qualities:

The technical qualities in the CD-ROM include text, buttons, images, sound,
Videos, Gifs, and animations.

By including text, I could include information about the places and activities
which would them allow a user to find out more information if they were
interested or curious. Also, by including text I could also include scrolling text
boxes. This then meant that the user could interact with the CD-ROM more.

By including buttons, I could create more than one page and this then meant that I could
include more content. This means that the user can interact with the CD-ROM. Also, I could
include rollovers on the buttons which makes them more interesting and more interactive.

By including sound, I could make the CD-ROM more interesting. I could also create a general
tone for the CD-ROM. I used the sound track from the film ‘Up’ to create a light weight and
happy tone. Also, the film ‘Up’ is about flying and exploring, if a user was to recognise the
music then they would apply these connotations of the film to the CD-ROM.

By including videos, I could make the CD-ROM

more interactive and less static because there
would be more movement. I also included
buttons that can be used to control the videos,
this then adds to the instructiveness of the CD-
ROM. The videos allow me to advertise the
places and the activities more. This is because
videos can give tours or demonstrations.

• Aesthetic Qualities:

Over all the aesthetic qualities are fairly calming and neutral. The background is pale blue to
represent the sky. This has positive connotations since it looks like a blue sky. Blue is also a
very positive colour. There are also clouds that contain the titles and the instructions

The colour of the font did not fit in with the rest of the
aesthetics of the CD-ROM. The black was slightly too
harsh for the softer colours that had been used on the
CD-ROM. However, the black text made sure that people
could read it and it made sure that it stood out against all
the other features.

A lot of the features are very angular. I could have made

more of the buttons with curves to fit in with the theme
of flying and clouds.

Some of the images that I used for the activity pages could have had more people smiling in
them and looking like they are having fun. This would have made these pages more
engaging since users would want to do that activity.

Production Skills:
• Ideas Generation:

When I started to plan the CD-ROM, I created a mood

board which contained possible fonts and images that
could be used. It also contained some of the colour
schemes that I could use as well.

As part of the ideas generation I also created a list of

thirty places and activities that could be included. I
then picked twelve of these and found information
about two of them to give an example of how I would
present the information in the CD-ROM.

I then created a mind map of ideas. The mind map

included ideas of what I may have included in the CD-
ROM. Some of these ideas were not included and other
ideas where developed on.

I then created a navigational structure that showed the

pages that I was going to include and how these pages
would link together.

I then created story boards for the splash page, the

contents page, the sub contents page, and one of the
information pages. I also created a story board for the logo. This meant that I could plan the
layout of the pages and the features that I am going to need. The storyboards also made sure
that I knew what assets I needed to create and what assets that I was going to get off the
internet.

I then collected the assets and created some of the assets on Photoshop.

I then created the CD-ROM on Director.

• Product Specification:

I created the product as closely to the product specification as possible. For example, I tried to
make sure that no features in the CD-ROM where gender specific. If I had included features that
where gender specific then this may have caused users to question whether or not the CD-ROM
was actually aimed at a specific gender.

I also needed to make sure that my CD-ROM was appropriate for the target audience. My target
audience was people aged between the ages 16 to 30. I needed to make sure that the CD-ROM
contained features that would interest people of these ages. For
example, the activities that I picked would interest younger
people rather than older people since some (such as bungee
jumping) may be physically demanding. However, I also made
sure that the places and activities that I had picked would
interest everyone (e.g. people who were thrill seekers would
enjoy bungee jumping and people who are into more gentle
things would enjoy horseback riding).

In my product specification, I needed to make sure that the CD-ROM had the correct stage size,
which is 640 x 480. This was one of the first things that I set when I started to create the CD-
ROM. This was because then I would be putting in all the assets and positioning them on a
Stage that was in the correct size.

• Workflow:

My workflow throughout was fairly consistent. I made sure that each time I went to create my
CD-ROM, that I would complete parts of it in chunks so that it would be made quite quickly and
so that my workflow would be kept quite high.

At the start of each day, I set aims that could be

achievable so that I had something to work towards.
Also, I could measure how much I had achieved that day
by seeing whether or not I had achieved the aims that I
had set.

I kept my workflow up by completing one task at a time.

For example, I would create one information page at a
time instead of creating all of them at once. This made
sure that I knew what I needed to do and what I had
done. Also, it meant that I did not have to keep changing what I was doing which may have
taken time to get into. For example, if I was to go from setting out the layout of the pages, to
then making the buttons work, to then adding the rollovers (before I had completed any of
them), then I may have lost track of what I was doing and the constant changing of tasks may
have confused me.

• Time Management:

To make sure that my time management was good, I made three milestones that I completed at
certain points when creating the CD-ROM. By making
milestones, had to evaluate what i had done, what I was going
to do, and whether or not i was going to complete it in time (if I
was not going to complete it in time then I had to evaluate how
I was going to make sure that i was going to complete it to the
deadline). This meant that i was working to complete the tasks
that I had set before I needed to complete the next milestone.

In the software skills diary, I had to create aims at the start of

every day. These aims had to be achievable though. This then
meant that I had planned out what I was going to try and
achieve that day. This also meant that I was working to achieve
the aims set. By putting down as many aims that where
possible to achieve that day, it meant that my time
management was good because I was not wasting any time. The aims that I set were also like
personal targets. This meant that I had chosen what I wanted to do that day.

• Technical Competence:

During this assignment, my technical competence has improved on both Photoshop and
Director.

I used Photoshop when creating the assets such as the buttons and the logo. I had
to use tools such as the Brush Tools and the Lasso Tools. I also learnt how to
change the blending options to create lines around thing and to create shadows
on the buttons so that they looked more three-dimensional. By learning to use the
Photoshop tools properly, I could create more professional looking buttons that
would increase the quality of the CD-ROM. Also, I learnt how to improve the
quality of a cartoon image so that it looked better.

In Director, my technical competence improved because I learnt how to use the grid
properly and how to script the CD-ROM so that it would pause at the right frames. I
also learnt how to make buttons work, how to create simple animations, how to add
rollovers, how to add a fade in, and how to add scrolling text boxes. This meant that
I could create a professional looking multimedia project that had a lot of
interactivity.

• Teamwork:

My teamwork skills have also improved because I have learnt how to communicate ideas with
other people better. I had to create a questionnaire that I then gave out to ten people in my
class. I had to have the confidence to ask them to
complete the questionnaire. This improved my
teamwork because I had to talk to people that I
had not talked to before. In the questionnaire, I
had to explain to them that I had created the CD-
ROM and that they needed to use the CD-ROM to
then answer the questionnaire. I also had to ask
that they leaved any comments that they thought
would be useful in evaluation and improving my
work. I needed to collect their opinions on my
finished CD-ROM. This meant that I needed to
have good teamwork skills to be able to go
through the finished product with them and
answer any questions they had so that they could
give the most useful feedback.
