FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF USE OF CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS

ALONG WITH ORGANIC/BIO-FERTILIZERS AND MEANS TO

PROMOTE THEIR USE WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE
FERTILIZERS AND CHEMICALS TRAVANCORE LIMITED (FACT)
SYNOPSIS
INTRODUCTION
India is the third largest producer of oil seeds in the world. Application of chemical fertilizers
has contributed significantly to the huge increase in the world food production. But the adverse
impacts of excessive inputs of chemical fertilizers in conventional agri-cultural practices are
being well documented. Chemical fertilizers also have contributed significantly toward the
pollution of water, air and soil. In agro-ecosystems, the use of synthetic toxic chemical
pesticides affects the soil fertility and growth of cultivated crops. At present we are using
chemical fertilizers in great quantities to compensate the deficiency of nutrients in soil. Organic
products are eco-friendly natural sources, which can be considered as an alter-native to
sustainable agriculture development. The eco-friendly and environmentally safe bio fertilizer
became handy to minimize chemical fertilizer use as well as a carbon sink in such crop fields.
. In India, as a step toward the expansion of native sources, the application of organic waste
materials will be useful for achieving higher production. The impact of organic agriculture on
natural resources favors interactions within the agro-ecosystem that is vital for both agricultural
production and nature conservation.

INDUSTRY PROFILE
Fertilizer Industry:
Fertilizer is defined as any substance which is organic or inorganic, natural or artificial,
supplies one or more of the chemical elements required for plant growth. Carbon, oxygen and
hydrogen are directly supplied by air and water therefore not treated as nutrients by the fertilizer
industry. One of the vital industries for the Indian economy is the Indian Fertiliser Industry.
Indian Fertilizer Industry main objective is to ensure the supply of primary and secondary
nutrients in the required quantities. The Indian Fertilizer Industry is the most energy intensive
sectors according to the context of environmental discussions.
COMPANY PROFILE

Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT)

The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited or FACT Ltd, a fertiliser and chemical
manufacturing company in Kochi, Kerala, India, was incorporated in 1943, by Maharajah Sree
Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. It is the first fertiliser manufacturing company in
independent India and also the largest Central public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) in the State
of Kerala. FACT a Government of India Enterprise has business interests in manufacturing and
marketing of fertilizers, caprolactam, engineering consultancy and fabrication of equipment’s.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

1. To study the efficiency of both the fertilizers (bio and chemical) on the yield of the
Crops.
2. To study the effect of bio fertilizer and chemical fertilizer on bio chemical
Parameter of the plants.
3. To demonstrate the effectiveness of bio fertilizer cultural practices.

THE NEED AND IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

Increased fertilizer use will continue to play an important role in increasing agricultural
productivity given the diminishing land available for cultivation. Therefore, it is important to
understand fertilizer use patterns and efficiency over time, the changing structure of fertilizer
markets, the current policy environment and the role of various factors influencing fertilizer
consumption.

METHODOLOGY
Research Design: Structure question method
Structure Question Method
It is a positivist research method. A questionnaire is a series of questions asked to distributors
and farmers to obtain statistically useful information about the problem.
SOURCES OF DATA

For this study, primary data is collected from the distributors and farmers with the help of
questionnaire and secondary data is collected from books, journals, and websites.

SAMPLING PROCEDURE

In the Non-probability sampling the Convenience sampling technique is used in this study.

Convenience Sampling: Convenience sampling is a non-probability sampling technique where

subjects are selected because of their convenient accessibility and proximity to the researcher.
