Question 2 9 marks

See truss above. The truss is connected to the ground with a pin at point A, and a
roller at point B. All other connections of the truss are pinned, and all members are 2-
force members. At point F, a force of 20 N acts downward. All dimensions are given
in meters.
a) What are the Reaction forces in A?

With the Method of Joints

b) Find force in members FD
c) Find forces in members BD and BA

With the Method of Sections

d) Find forces in AC and AD (hint: cut along line a-a’)

Now find the force:

e) in member DC
f) in member DE

Question 4 9 marks

See figure above. Shown is a rigid body. It has been fixed at point A (0, 0). All
measurements are given in meters. Loading Q starts at value Q1 and then increases
linearly to value Q2 at shown coordinates. All forces and moments are given in
magnitudes; directions are as shown in figure.

For the following question assume P1 is 6.0 N and P2 is 8.0 N, both in shown
direction. Couple M is 0 and loadings Q1 and Q2 are both 0.
a) What is the equivalent force-couple system at A?

For the following question assume M is 12.0 Nm. P1, P2, Q1 and Q2 are 0.
b) What is the equivalent force-couple system at A?

For the following question assume P1, P2 are 0, M is 0. Q1 is 12.0 N/m and Q2 is
24.0 N/m.
c) What is the equivalent force-couple system at A?

Finally, assume P1 is 12.0 N, P2 is 8.0 N, M is 40.0 Nm, Q1 is 8.0 N/m and Q2 is 4.0
N/m.
d) What forces (direction and magnitude) should I apply at points B and C to
make the equivalent force-couple system at A equal to 0.0 N and 0.0 Nm?
