2.1.-DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING REQUIREMENTS

A.-OVERVIEW

The Motor Control Centers for interior services will be made

up of self-supported structures among themselves to form a
complete group. The construction of the Motor Control
Centers for interior services will be per the last edition of
NEMA's standards.

The Motor Control Centers are to be designed in such a way

that they can be extended beyond their free edges with
other sections of the same manufacture.

Each Motor Control Center will have a structural shape base,

which shall allow its installation on channels embedded in
the concrete floor and fastened by anchor screws at the
front and rear.

The structure of the Motor Control Centers will be made of

angles or iron channels, or metal sheet shapes not less than
# No. 12 U.S.G. Rigidity of the structure should be able to
bear the stress of a short circuit and the shipping and
installation stresses, without undergoing permanent
deformations.

The covers, panels and doors will be made of sheet metal at

least # No. 14 U.S.G.

The surface of the equipment shall be blasted with sand or

commercial grade granulated metal or the surface should be
treated chemically and bonded with zinc phosphate. Before
applying the final finish, a dry layer of grey catalyzed epoxy
shall be applied except if another color is indicated in the
Technical Data Sheets.

CENTER

ELABORATED: REVIEW: APPROVED: COPY No:

The Motor Control Center should have in the upper part a

horizontal duct with a transverse section sufficient to allow
wiring between the vertical sections.

Each section should have a vertical duct starting at the

lower part of the Motor Control Center. A usable space
should be left at the entire width and length of the Motor
Control Center with a height of at least 30 cm (12 inches),
this space should be opened at the lower part between the
channels of the base in order to receive the conduits which
enter by the bottom and allow the pulling of the cables.

The wiring ducts and holes where the cables pass should not
have any cutting edges or burrs which could damage the
insulation of the conductors during the wiring or when
vibrations occur during the operation.

C.-BUSES AND CONNECTIONS

The main horizontal bus of each Motor Control Center should

have a continuous capacity according to the Technical Data
Sheets and/or one line diagram, and the vertical buses in
each section will be for 300 continuous Amp, as a minimum.
The buses and its taps will be made of electrolytic copper
with adequate dimensions for the specified rated current.
The temperature rise over the maximum 50°C room
temperature at the connections and bars should not exceed
the 65°C from bar to bar and 45°C from bar to cable with a
total temperature of 115°C and 95°C, respectively.

The connections of the horizontal and vertical buses should

be silver-plated and fastened with non magnetic screws,
highly resistant to corrosion and galvanically compatible, a
flat washer will be placed below the screw head and another
below the nut.

Nuts are to be fastened with a serrated washer.

The bus will be supported by an insulating material

exclusively made of porcelain or epoxy resin with a
mechanical strength to bear stresses caused by the short
circuit symmetric current.

upper part to the lower part or from left to right seen from
the front of the Motor Control Center.

The grounding bar should be supplied the length of each

Motor Control Center, with a minimum capacity of 300
continuous amps. Each cabinet shall be connected directly
to this bus. The position of the grounding bar should, not
obstruct the entrance of the cables at the lower part.

The grounding bus should include two connectors for # No.

2 AWG cables, one at each end and each one and Motor
Control Center for the connection to the grounding system.

D.-POWER CABLE CONNECTIONS

The vendor will supply all terminal connectors for the supply
cables. The gauge of the cables will be given in the
corresponding one line diagram. Connectors shall be of the
mechanical type, with a hexagonal nut. The connectors for
the cable up to # 500 MCM will have a double hole for
fastening purposes.

Where there is more than one cable per phase, a separate

connector will be provided for each cable.

The cable inlets and the supports will be located in such a

way that cables can be routed with a minimum of curves. In
any event bend radius will be less than 10 times the
external cables diameter.

E.-WIRING

The wiring at the Motor Control Center will be NEMA Class 1,

type B, unless another type of wiring is indicated in the
Technical Data Sheets.

All the control wiring within the Motor Control Center will be
with # No. 14 AWG cable as a minimum, with a THWN or
THHW type insulation, except if another gauge or type of
insulations is indicated in the Technical Data Sheets.

ELABORATED: REVIEW: APPROVED: COPY No:

The wiring for external connections to circuits will be carried

until terminal blocks.

Relay contacts, and control selectors, etc., will be wired to

terminal blocks for connection to external circuits. The
terminal blocks should be 600 V., with marked barriers and
strips so they can be identified. A minimum of 4 terminal
points will be left in each block as a reserve in each starter.

F.-CONTROL AND/OR PROTECTION UNITS

The control and/or protection units will be designed to be

mounted within the vertical sections in such a way that all
the components are totally enclosed and isolated from other
units. Each compartment should have a hinged door so it
can be opened, at least, laterally 100°. When the doors are
closed they should be attached to the stationary structure
so that when the unit is removed the vertical buses of the
bars are not exposed.

Each compartment shall have a steel are front door with

hinges fixed to the structure.

Each motor will be controlled by a start-stop push-button

station, located in MCC door.

All available spaces for future use shall be covered with

removable plates.

Each cubicle for removable units shall have guides to insert

and remove each unit in such a way that they can be
replaced or installed with the bus activated. The connecting
surfaces from the vertical bus and from the sliding contacts
of the removable unit shall be silver-plated.

Each section of the Motor Control Center will have a heating

resistor for continuous service, with a cover, 250W, 120
volts, controlled by a thermostat.

G.-OPERATING MECHANISM OF THE CIRCUIT BREAKERS

All the circuit breakers shall have an external manual

operating mechanism.

HOJA 7/11

ELABORATED: REVIEW: APPROVED: COPY No:

It shall be possible to fasten the circuit breaker with a

padlock in the "off" position.

The door shall have a mechanical interlock with the circuit

breaker in such a way that the door cannot be opened when
the circuit breaker is in the "closed" position.

The mechanism can be momentarily overridden with a

special tool.

It shall not be possible to close the door when the circuit

breaker is in the "closed" position, except if the handle is
turned to be aligned in this position before it is closed.

2.2.-THERMOMAGNETIC CIRCUIT BREAKERS

type with inversed time and instantaneous protection
characteristics. They will have trip elements in each phase
and they will be of the free trip type.

shall be made in such a way that it will allow the starting of
the motors.

Except if other interruptive capacities are indicated in the

Technical Data Sheets and/or One line Diagrams, the
interruptive capacities in symmetric amps of the circuit
breakers are to be according to the following Table:

Switch Interruptive Capacity

Frame in Symmetric Amps.

each unit mounted at the front part of the removable unit. A
fuse shall be provided for both primary and secondary.

The control transformer capacity should be sufficient to power

to all control devices connected to the control transformer.

NEMA 4 and 5 starters shall have an auxiliary relay with a coil

for 120 V., to control the coil of the starter.

Reversible Starters
