SUBJECT: Report and Summary of Experiment 3: Step Response

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate step response specifically across resistive, inductive,

and capacitive components in both RL and RC circuits. Before the experiment could be completed, the

team did a pre-lab exercise consisting of drawing up all of the model circuits in PSpice, and modeling the

response. Once these had been verified by the professor, the experiment could begin. The team acquired

all materials necessary for building the circuits, measured the values with the bridge, and found the output

impedance of the function generator as done in previous labs. Next the values of resistance, inductance,

and capacitance from the pre-lab were replaced with the actual measured values of the components used

in the lab. The two RL and two RC circuits were then physically built followed by the two RLC circuits,

using the figures in the lab manual. Measurements of the voltage were taken using the oscilloscope and

reading the signal produced. All values were recorded in the data sheet from the lab manual.

After recording all data on the data sheet, and performing any necessary calculations, the team

analyzed the data against calculated ideal values. The RL data had 11.5% error, and the RC had 3.4%

error. The team was quite content with these values, considering that other teams had percent error in the

hundreds. It was concluded that most of the error probably came from inaccuracy in the measurement on

the oscilloscope since the beam was sometimes difficult to pinpoint on the screen. Graphs of each of the

circuits, as well as a schematic of the circuits and the data sheet are attached below.
