Dear Editor,
I wrote to you previously expressing my
concern at the changes to the main street
of Ballan. Now I wish to add further to my
concerns, not only at the loss of ambience in
the street but that after many weeks of trying
to walk on stones, the Shire has decided to
put asphalt instead of concrete as the main
part of the footpath to walk on. To date only
a small area of the street has been done but
I would like to express my concern that the
asphalt is a dreadful substitute for concrete.
As a person with a disability I need a firm,
flat surface to walk on and the asphalt does
not provide this. It is uneven and not as level
and a danger for persons like myself. I am
not concerned with asphalt near the gutters
but where people walk; this should not be
the choice of material for a path.
I also pointed out that the roses should be
longliveyou.gov.au saved and replanted to continue to provide
colour in our street. If the shire wants to
know what green weeds look like they only
need to look at what was planted in the

The first call for volunteers occurred after concerns were
raised in 2011 over the use of chemicals in fire training,
including firefighting foams at the former CFA Training
College at Fiskville.
The State Government was worried about the potential risk
of chemical residues affecting the local environment as well
as human health.
The site has since been shut down.

people who have any worries. It would be great for their
peace of mind.”
Mr Young, a father-of-two, farms a property about 3km west
of Fiskville.
His next door neighbour, 33-year old Andrew Wells said
he would also give “some thought” about taking part in the
health study.
The Government held a parliamentary inquiry into the
operations of the training college and offered health checks
to anyone who worked, trained or otherwise had any contact
with the training college.
That initial offer was later extended to include past students Ruth Bowden and James Hay Cr. Paul Tatchell has his cup topped up with tea Marg McKay

The latest call for action simply serves as a reminder for
people who now wish to take up the latest offer.
As was the case with the previous offer, school students and
staff this time will undergo a health check and if need be
they will be referred to a surveillance program.
An independent medical provider may determine it
appropriate for some of the former students and staff to take
part in the five-year health surveillance program.
The program involves an annual medical assessment
including a health questionnaire and a detailed medical
examination and pathology.
