1.0 JOB/EXPERIMENT NO.: ME594/02

2.0 NAME OF EXPERIMENT: Calibration of Vernier Height Gauge, Vernier
Depth Gauge, & linear measurements using these instruments.
3.0 OBJECTIVE: To calibrate the venire height gauge and depth gauge and to
measure the given component.

PRINCIPLE:
Height Gauge
This also uses the same principle of vernier caliper and is used especially for the
measurement of height. It is
equipped with a special base
block, sliding jaw assembly and
a removable clamp. The upper
and lower surfaces of the
measuring jaws are parallel to
the base, which make possible to
measure both over and under
surfaces. A scribing attachment
in place of measuring jaw can be
used for scribing lines at certain
distance above the surface.
Specification of a vernier height
gauge is made by specifying the
range of measurement, type of
scale required and any
particular requirement in regard
to the type of vernier desired.
For all these measurement, use
of surface plate as datum
surface is very essential.

Vernier Depth Gauge

1) This is similar to vernier height gauge.

2) It consists of main scale, vernier scale, jaws, and lock nut fine adjustment
screw like vernier
caliper as shown in fig.
3) In vernier depth
gauge, graduated scale
can slide through the
base and vernier scale
remains fixed.
4) The vernier scale is
fixed to the main body
of the depth gauge and is read in the same way as vernier caliper.
5) In vernier depth gauge, graduated scale can slide through the base and
vernier scale remains fixed.
6) The main scale provides the datum surface from which the measurements
are taken. Vernier depth gauge is used to measure depth of holes, distance from
a plane surface to a projection and recess.

4.0 APPARATUS & SPECIMEN REQUIRED:

4.1 Surface Plate
4.2 Vernier Height Gauge
4.3 Vernier Depth Gauge.
4.4 Slip Gauge Set
4.5 Suitable specimens for the measurements

5.0 PROCEDURE
Calibration:
1. With the help of slip gauges as standard, calibrate the gauges.
Procedure for Calibration:
1.) The range of the instruments is noted down.
2.) Within that range, slip gauges are selected.
3.) The measuring instrument is placed on the surface plate and set for
zero and the slip gauges are placed one by one between the
measuring points.
4.) The slip gauge (reference standard) readings and the corresponding
(observed) readings in the measuring instruments are noted down
and tabulated.

2. Plot calibration graph of (i) Standard Input (slip gauge reading) vs.
Output (observed reading) and (ii) Standard Input vs. Error
3. Observe the characteristics like error, least count, sensitivity, etc.

Measurement:
1. Place the work piece and the gauge appropriately and carry out the
measurement of the job.
2. Prepare a report of the measurement and indicate the characteristics of
the work pieces.
