Description
NICABOR® is an in-house development by the MTV
Metallveredlung, which provides excellent corrosion
resistance combined with superior abrasive wear
protection. NICABOR® is an electrolytic surface
finish, where solid particles are deposited within a
ductile nickel matrix. This combination provides
components with an excellent protection from
abrasive wear.
NICABOR® can be deposited in an unlimited
coating thickness. Even coatings of large
components and parts with complex geometry as
well as internal coatings are possible in a cost- Fig.1: Cross section through 650 µm NICABOR®

efficient way. Hence, the NICABOR® coating offers

a technically as well as financially excellent
alternative to cost intensive processes like sprayed
or welded coatings (claddings), which so far have
been used under difficult conditions and abrasive
wear.

Properties
NICABOR® is a nickel dispersion where boron
carbide particles - with a mean grain size of
approx. 1 µm - are deposited highly concentrated Fig.2: Piston Rod with 60 µm NICABOR® (grinded)
(approx. 15 %) and homogeneously in the coating
matrix. Boron carbide has a Mohs hardness of 9.3
and is therefore also known as black diamond.
These particles in combination with the ductile
nickel matrix achieve excellent system properties
with very good corrosion and outstanding wear
resistance.
The composite hardness is about 400 HV0.1 and
could be increased to approx. 550 HV0.1 by alloying
cobalt and called CONIBOR. The wear resistance
could be influenced by use of other grain sizes and
concentrations of the solid particles.

Corrosion Resistance
Through the ductile nickel matrix, NICABOR® coatings are very good dynamic loadable and
characterized through an excellent corrosion resistance.
Neutral Salt Spray Test (according to DIN EN ISO 9227 NSS) 50 µm:
≥ 1,000 h without corrosion
Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test (according to DIN EN ISO 9227 AASS) 50 µm:
≥ 500 h without corrosion

Wear Resistance
The wear by friction or strike follows conventionally, while through mechanical energy parts of the
structure were erupted. In this regard baron carbide is the ideal material, because it is the
hardest material which can be produced synthetically economically.
The ductile nickel matrix prevents a quarry out of
the solid particles in extreme situations. Numerous Counter Partner
investigations and tests of leading manufacturers
of the hydraulic and printing industry as well as the

steel production and the general mechanical
engineering were passed even with low coating
thicknesses.
Taber-Abrasor Test (CS10-Roller, 10 N Load,
Nickel Matrix
10,000 Cycles):
NICABOR: ≤ 5 mg Abrasion / 1,000 Cycles Base Material

CONIBOR: ≤ 1 mg Abrasion / 1,000 Cycles Fig.4: Abrasive wear protection of NICABOR®

Temperature Resistance
Heat resistance and thermal shock resistance of
NICABOR® are excellent, i.e. with this layer de-
posited on casting rolls even special steel strips
and hard steel strips could be produced. NICABOR®
is also be used successfully for flat moulds, tubular
moulds and work rolls in the steel industry. Fig.5: Casting rolls for strip production
