Understanding Camera Lighting Techniques for Moving Image

Assignment title
Production

Aim
This unit aims to develop learners’ understanding of camera and lighting equipment and provide them
with skills needed to use this equipment in moving image production.

Unit abstract
The operation of camera is lighting are fundamental to all moving image production. Whilst people
working in these production areas will specialise in one or the other, a sound knowledge of both is
required as the two have to work in perfect harmony if acceptable results are to be achieved.

This unit aims to develop the skills of camera operators in camera acquisition whether for TV (studio,
multi - camera and outside broadcast), video or film production. Learners will be introduced to the
operating functions of a camera and they will explore the technical requirements for shooting material
for editing into a finished production. Learners will be introduced to the conventions surrounding shots,
sequences and framing. They will be able to explore and use lighting techniques using studio or location
lighting equipment.

Scenario

Seamus Heaney’s poetry is known for its natural, homely and true to country life content. His writing is
admired and showcased internationally. The new ‘Seamus Heaney Homeplace’ Centre in Bellaghy, Co.
Derry is a state of the art interpretative centre that will help to bring Heaney’s life and words to a whole
new audience, elevating him further among the great Irish poets. You have been asked to produce a
moving image piece, which is inspired by the work of Seamus Heaney. This bespoke brief will challenge
you as a creative, to bring Heaney’s written words to life in a moving image piece and provides a
platform to showcase your understanding of camera and lighting techniques in moving image
production.

Indicative Content:

1 Understand theory of light as it applies to camera lenses and lighting
