1 Description
This guideline outlines basic requirements for bracing of small bore connections to pipes (i.e. vent-, drain-,
instrument- or sample-connections).
The Piping Detail Standard; 37-1A-KST-P52-00002 PDS-509 provides general
guidelines for bracing. PDS-509 Sheet 5 Plate type bracing shall not be used.
This guideline will provide additional details to what, where and how to brace the connections.
Requirements for bracing stated below is applicable for branches 2" and below which terminates with a valve or
an instrument. Connections requiring bracing is stated on the specific PDS details, - typically, instrument
pressure connection, etc.
Reference is made to Sheet 1 of PDS 509 which gives recommendation regarding scope for bracing.

 BRACING TYPES
Main bracing type to be used should minimize length of bracing for stiffness, i.e valve should be routed as close
as possible to header pipe. Some examples (welded to branch-flange and header pipe) shown below.

Alt 1 Alt 2

When header pipe is 12” or above, an additional circumferential brace is required.

 BRACING ACOUSTIC PIPES

Pipes that are modelled in an acoustic fatigue pipe spec and require bracing shall be braced using full
encirclement pads. Acoustic fatigue piping class is CC3, CD3, DC4, DD4 and DG1 and pipes requiring braces
are as required by all classes.

 NOTE FOR FABRICATION / SHOP ENG.

If clamps are used they shall be selected from the Pipe Support Detail Standard:
- For clamps on lines from ½" to 1½": PC-020 to be used.
- For clamps on lines 2" and upwards: PC-022 shall be used.
- For clamps on GRE lines : PC-900 shall be used.
The brace material shall be compatible with the clamps.
Bracing materials for welded bracing shall be compatible with pipe class.

1.1 Cap Support Pipe Bracing Software.

The PDMS software, Cap Support Pipe Bracing, shall be used by the piping designer to model pipe bracing
where required.

1.1.2 Identify flange (1) and header (2):

Notes:

st
Dig 1: Always the 1 flange closest to header branch connection
Dig 2: In most cases dig on the side you want the brace to come

A new option “Flg to Flg” has been added to Form .

st
This option should only be used if other 1 . choice options are not possible.

Additional options for GRE piping have been added

1. for no elbow case
2. for 1 or 2 elbow case
Additional option “Flange to Flange when we have 1 or 2 elbows in the branch”

1.1.4 Create Bracing

RESTRICTIONS WHEN MODELING BRACE IN PDMS:

- Connection and header must be in the same PIPE in PDMS.
- When modifying brace ALWAYS use brace software menu to do this. DO NOT modify in command line.
- The braced item must be at 90 degrees or Parallel to the header.
- Automatic getwork and savework are done

2 Responsibilities and Interfaces

It is the piping designer who is responsible for providing bracing where required according to Piping Detail
Standard and this Guideline. The piping designer also has the responsibility to model bracing into PDMS using
Cap Support Pipe Bracing software.
