Composer Notes
From January 15 to January 19, 2015, Pope Francis made an historic visit to the Philippines. As
part of that weeklong celebration, the Archdiocese of Manila held an evangelization conference at
the University of Santo Tomas. The archdiocese invited representatives from OCP (Ken Canedo,
Jesse Manibusan, and myself) to attend the conference and perform during the concerts. “Blessed
Are You/Mapapalad Kayo” was composed for that occasion and performed by Jesse during the
concerts. We believe that the song captures the joyous spirit of the Filipino people!
The form of the song is call and response. During the refrain, one voice or group of voices sings
one musical phrase of the refrain – “Blessed are you!” or “Mapapalad kayo!” – and another voice
or group of voices responds with the very same musical phrase. You may divide each of the verses
and/or the refrain between cantor(s), soloists, choir, and assembly or simply have one group of
voices entrusted to the same musical phrase throughout the entire song. There are many events
when one may sing this song, from catechetical lessons (the recording features a children’s choir)
to concert venues to any worship event that features or refers to the Beatitudes. Liturgical themes
of the song include social justice and solidarity with those who live in the margins of our society.
