Standard:
S5P3. Students will investigate the electricity, magnetism, and their relationship.
b. Determine the necessary components for completing an electric circuit.
c. Investigate common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity.
Essential Question:
How can I use what I know about circuits to light a house?
Vocabulary: Materials:
--circuit building materials (specifics are up to the teacher)
Circuit conductors insulators --all additional building materials are up to the teacher
1. Students will begin by using Lino to describe everything they know about circuits. Students should include any
previously learned information from class.
2. Show students the STEM Challenge. Have students discuss what the problem is.
Summarizer/Assessment:
Allow finished groups to observe other groups work. Facilitate conversation about the different ways that groups chose to
build and which ideas students like best, why?
Challenge: Design a model of the new PSE that has at least 4 rooms, 2 bathrooms and
1-2 hallways that is lit up.
Criteria:
The house must have 4 different rooms.
2 bathrooms
1-2 hallways
Each room must have a light bulb.
You must have at make either a series circuit or a parallel circuit in your school.
Your design and plan must be complete before building
Your school must have at least one floor
The roof must be removable
Rooms must be labeled
You must have the area and perimeter of each room, hallway and the entire school. The area of the rooms and
hallways must equal the whole school.
Constraints:
You have 45 minutes maximum to design and plan your school.
You have 1 hour to build your design, test and improve
You may only use the provided materials
Use the materials given only
You must work together as a group to finish the project! Show ROARing behavior!
Materials:
Cardboard, 48 inches of tape, glue sticks, diodes, copper tape
IMAGINE / PLAN / DESIGN: Here is our group’s ideas about how to build
the school.
