STATE OF MAINE HANCOCK, ss, STATE OF MAINE v. JALIQUE KEENE SUPERIOR COURT CRIMINAL ACTION DOCKET NO. CR-i8- AFFIDAVIT IN SUPPORT OF PROBABLE CAUSE Your A ffiant is Thomas Pickering, a Detective with the Maine State Police, Major ‘Crimes Unit North. Your Afflant has been a Detective since February 2012. I have personal knowledge of the facts and circumstances hereinafter related as a result of my own investigative efforts as well as the efforts of other Maine State Police Detectives, and other law enforcement personnel, which had been shared ‘with me as part of the investigation. The information stated in this affidavit is not all the information we have gathered in our investigation of this case but I believe is sufficient to establish probable cause to believe that Jalique Keene has committed the erime of Murder on June 1, 2018 in Bar Harbor, Maine “Your affiant was contaoted by the Maine State Police Bangor RCC on June 2, 2018 at approximately 11:32 AM, reporting a missing person from Bar Harbor, ‘ME. Your effiant later arrived at Bar Harbor PD (BHPD) and leamed the following information from Maine State Police Sgt, Jason Richards: that Mikaela Conley, date of March 22, 1999, was reported to BHPD as missing; that Mikaela had left in the eftemoon on May 31, 2018 to travel to south to pick up Jalique Keene and a female named Natasha; that Mikaela was last seen in the early ‘moming hours of June 1" at her home by her mother, Danielle Timoney. ‘Your affiamt reviewed BHPD reports regarding this investigation: that Mikaela’s mother, Danielle Timoney, reported Mikacla missing on June 1, 2018 at approximately 1-04 P.M.; that Mikeela left her home located at 27 Eden St. in Bar Harbor; that Danielle reported that Mikaela’s cellular phone was located this ‘momting on the property of the Connors-Emerson School; that a schoo! official ‘gave Danielle a cellular phone that Danielle identified the phone as belonging to Mikzela; that a review was conducted of Mikeela’s phone; that there was a video ‘was identified that was uploaded to Snapchat on June 1, 2018 at 2:19 AM from “Miksela’s phone; that 2 male named Jelique Keene was identified in the video; that the video showed an area believed to be the playground at the Connors- Emerson School.On June 2, 2018, an MSP Canine search team located human remains in the wooded area between the Connors-Emerson School and the intersection of Eden. Avenue and Wesi St. in Bar Harbor, Maine. The remains were concealed urder a pile of bamboo branches and other vegetation. Further examination of the scene revealed clear drag metks indicating the body had been dragged from the arca of the school. The human remains were later positively identified as Mikacla Conley DOB March 22, 1999. Dr. Margaret Greenwald a State Medical Examiner conducted the autopsy cf Mikaela Conley on Inne 3%, 2018. Dr Greenwald reported her preliminary fincings to me by phone following the autopsy. She found evidence of blun: force ‘trauma to the head and face, and strangulation. Moreover, the body had multiple abrasions and contusions on the torso and extremities, indicative both of dregging as well as inflicted injury. There was also evidence of anal penetration with injury with contusions and Jaccrations to the anus aud contusions inside the rectum. In, Jer opinion the cause of death is blunt force trauma and strangulation. The manner of death is homicide. Jalique Keene was interviewed on June 2%, before the body was found, by MSP detectives Jason Fowler and Paul White. In that interview he admitted to being picked up by Mikaela at Logan Airport and driving back to Bar Harbor with her. He stated that he stayed with her info the early morning hours at her home end in that vicinity. He stated that they both entered the nearby Connors-Emerson School grounds around 2:00AM, a fact confirmed by my viewing of surveillance tepes gathered from the school, further discussed below. He stated they stayed together on the school grounds for about an hour during which time they “made out” and had scx. Then she became upset, there was a physical altercation. He showed the detectives the scratches on his back he stated that she had inflicted on him. He stated he left around 3:30 and did not retum. He stated he never saw her again, On June 3", I conducted a walk through with Jalique and then later interviewed hin. At that time, he confirmed that they had had vaginal sex and added mder my questioning that he had also had anal sex with Mikaela, and that this was the first time they had had sex. He continued to state that he left her on the school grounds at approximately 3:30 AM and that he never saw her again. He told me that he walked down to the shore near the Bar Harbor shore path where he waited for her forfour hours. I, working with other detectives, was able to obtain the video surveillance footage fiom all the camera in use at the school. In viewing that footage I was able to observe at 2:17 AM Mikaela Conley and Jalique Keene walking on the walkway that leads from Eden Street to the Connors-Emerson school; ‘Mikaela and Jalique walk off camera in the direction of the Eden St. side of the school where the playground is located. I then locked at other footage fromacamera positioned on the Eden St. side of the building. The footage quality was poor, due to low light conditions and cobwebs in front of the lens partially obstructing the view. It resembled night vision photography. Never the less [ was able to observe a person appearing to be Michaela come into view and be seated on the ground, in an area that would have been very dark. I then observed at 3:36 AMa male appearing to be Jalique appear at her side and after some sort of interaction, he is seen picking her up over his shoulder and walking off with her as sac is Kicking with her fect. 9, then studied additional footage from the same camera taken the next moming in {full daylight conditions. At approximately 7:03 AM I observed person come in. and out of view running a lavm mower. Shortly thereafier J observed on the footage Jalique Keene come from sround a row of bushes into the open holding an spparentiy lifeless Mikaela by her wrists pulled over his hack with her body draped on his back and hastily dragging her across the soreen toward the area vihere her body was later found. [ observed that Jalique was dressed in the same black clothes he was seen wearing earlier when they entered the school grounds andalso the same distinctive tattoo on his left arm that I had carlier observed on the video footage and when speaking with him. 10. The video footage clearly contradicts Jalique’s claim that he left Mikaela atthe school grounds at 3:30 AM and never saw her again. At no point during my study of the surveillance tape did I observe the presence of any other male or female other than described above. ‘WHEREFORE: Your aflliant bas probeble cause to believe that Jaligus Keene has ‘committed the crime of murder I, Det. Thomas Pickering, DEPOSE AND SWEAR, UPON INFORMATION AND BELIEF, THAT ALL OF THE INFORMATION CONTAINED WITHIN THIS AFFIDAVIT, IS BOTH TRUTHFUL AND ACCURATE. Subscribed and sworn to by Det.
