Tournament Recommendation Assignment

Part 1:
Read the attached information on different types of tournaments. Complete the advantages and
disadvantages section for each type of tournament. You will need to fill all bullets and may add
more as you see fit.

Based on the information you have read and analyzed you are now required to make a
recommendation for a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament held over 4 days.

For this assignment you must provide a specific recommendation with a rationale that illustrates
your understanding of the advantage and limitations of the different types of tournaments. For
this assignment, assume two different scenarios:
● Scenario 1 - Five teams registered for the event
● Scenario 2 - Ten teams registered for the event

Scenario #1
1. What is your recommendation? (1 mark)

I would do a round robin tournament

2. Justify.explain your recommendation. In answering this question, you are required to

make two to three specific points to support your recommendation. (8 marks)

I believe that a round robin tournament would work well because everyone will be able to play
each other and will get more time to play. If everyone faces each other every team will get the
same amount of games and it will be fair. In a Single elimination tournament you could play
one game or more depending on how well your team does so round robin tourneys just let
teams play more games. Also no teams are eliminated so everyone can just have fun. If a
team is eliminated early then they won't be able to play anymore and will get bored. Finally, at
the end of the tournament you will get the true winner: the team that won the most games
against everyone.

3. What limitations or disadvantages will our class potentially face in implementing this
recommendation? (4 marks)

The problem with a round robin tournament is it could take a very long time to play all the
games. There will also be lots of games that won’t be close due to their being one really good
team. Finally, with 5 teams the round robin tournament will have buys so there will be one
team each round that cant play a game. That’s because there isn’t an even number of teams
so one team won’t have an opponent to face.

4. Insert the draw with teams below. (6 marks)

Game 1 Game 2 Game 3 Game 4 Game 5

T1 - T4 T1 - T3 T1 - T2 T1 - T5 T2 - T4

T3 - T2 T2 - T5 T5 - T4 T3 - T4 T3 - T5

T5 BYE T4 BYE T3 BYE T2 BYE T1 BYE

Scenario #2
1. What is your recommendation? (1 mark)

Single Elimination

2. Justify.explain your recommendation. In answering this question, you are required to

make two to three specific points to support your recommendation. (8 marks)

I believe that a single elimination tournament would be a good idea because that way the
tournament will go faster. Many players will get bored if the basketball tournament lasts too
long and with 10 team it will be a long tournament if it’s played in another tournament type it
will take a long time. This way the tournament will actually end before teams drop out and lose
interest. Secondly, single elimination tournaments are easy to keep track of team stats
because because it is a play until you lose scenario.

3. What limitations or disadvantages will our class potentially face in implementing this
recommendation? (4 marks)

Sadly, since there isn’t the right number of teams (squares of 2 - 2, 4, 8, 16 ect.) so there will
be buys in the tournament. That means some teams won’t be able to play as many matches
and some teams will have to play more matches to win the tournament. For example, in the
chart below Team 1 only has to win 3 games to win the tournament whereas Team 2 has to
win 4. It will also cause problems because some teams might get upset after being knocked
out in the first round because they can’t play anymore.

4. Insert the draw with teams below. (6 marks)

Part 2:
Over the past 2-3 years at Forest Heights or maybe outside of Phys Ed you have ran or
participated in some tournament formats that are not in the attached package. List and describe
at least 2 of them below.
Format 1: Multilevel Elimination
This tournament format is very similar to single elimination as teams/ individuals play each other
in a playoff type style but losing does not mean elimination instead teams/individuals who lose
are placed in consolation brackets (the number of brackets may differ depending on the number
of teams/individuals). Therefore the last one standing in each bracket will win a medal.

Format 2: Knockout/ Strikes

Players are paired against each other and whoever loses gains a strike. The number of
accepted strikes depends on the tournament setup but once you have reached a
predetermined number of strikes you are eliminated. Therefore the last one standing once
everyone else has been knocked out wins the tournament.

Complete the following table:

Pros Cons

Format 1: - teams play more teams closer to - increased tournament duration-

their skill level very long tournament
- winning and losing teams still get to - can be confusing to run
play around the same number of
games
- good use of facility
- time efficient
- medal per each bracket

Format 2: - players are typically not eliminated - teams can potentially play a
the first round maximum of one game
- good use of facility - can take a long time depending on
- true winner strike cap
- duration of time depends on set
strikes, you choose how long or short
your tournament will be

Give 1 scenario for each format where you might choose to use that particular format and why.
Be sure to outline how you would use it.

Format 1:
It would be a good idea to use this format when there is a larger number of teams and a
spacious facility is available. This tournament would take approximately the same time as a
single elimination tournament if there are enough courts are available. All teams will be paired
up and play one game to start. The losers of these games will form another bracket and so
on, this will be the consolation bracket. All brackets will playoff in a single elimination type
tournament where once you lose you are eliminated. Playoffs will then carry on until bronze,
silver and gold are awarded in each bracket and the tournament is completed.

Format 2:

This format can be used with any number of teams but can be long with large numbers of
entries. Since this tournament duration depends on the number of fixed strikes it can be
chosen to format a tournament that needs to be commenced in a day or over a longer period
of time such as a week.First players are paired together in individual matches and the loser of
each match receives a strike. Once players reach a certain number of predetermined strikes
they will be eliminated. Players who are not yet eliminated will be then paired again and
continue to play. Once there is one player left standing and all the other components have
been eliminated the tournament is completed.
