Unit One Curriculum Outline
‘How We Express Ourselves’
Dear Parents,
This week Year 3 will start explor-
ing the second unit of the school
year ‘How We Express Ourselves.’
During this unit the children will
gain an understanding of how
‘Nature can inspire people to
express their creativity’. We will
be inquiring into this Central Idea
through the concepts of Perspec-
tive (including interpretation and
reflection) as well as Causation
(creative, emotional and thoughtful
interpretation of the world). We
will also use Reflection to think
back about our inspirations and
reflect on artists’ possible inspira-
tion for their work.
This unit offers an opportunity for a
real celebration of Arts. In specialist
classes including Visual Arts, Music
and Drama, the students will ex-
plore the concepts of self expres-
sion, interpretation and observation.

The students have a jot book that
they will use to record all their
inspirations. Similar real artists,
musicians, poets and authors, they
can jot down things from everyday
life that might spark their creativity
and imagination – powerful words,
sketches, images from newspapers
and magazines, pictures and photo-
graphs – anything is possible! We
will guide and scaffold them through
their process as the jot book will
also serve as a source of inspiration
for their final assessment.
