Census blocks

broadband access
to rural areas
REED CITY — In order to
ease the adoption of broadband
internet speeds in the area, the
federal government is putting up
sections of the state up for bid.
The Federal Communications
Commission is auctioning off
census blocks in areas across
the country, including Osceola
County, to private internet ser-
vice providers that will receive
federal dollars to build out into
underserved areas as part of the
Connect America Fund Phase II
initiative.
Earlier this year, the FCC re-
leased data that showed Osceola
County as second in the country
in the number of people who
lack access to broadband inter-
net speeds.
The FCC defines broadband
as 10 megabits per second down-
load speed and 1 Mbps for upload
speed and currently, more than
5,000 homes and business lack
access.
The bids were put out in
March and the results won’t be
released until early July, Com-

plaint at a local business.
The subject was identified
and returned to pay for
their purchase.
• 6/9/2018 OWI — During
a traffic stop for speeding,
officers made contact with
a driver that was deter-
mined to be under the influ-
ence of alcohol intoxicants.
Marijuana and open intoxi-
cants were located in the
vehicle. The subject was
arrested and transported
to the Osceola County Jail
where they were lodged on
charges.
• 6/10/2018 Civil — Offi-
cers were called to a prop-
erty dispute. Subjects were
advised to contact district
court.
• 6/11/2018 PDA — Of-
ficers were called to a car/
deer property damage ac-
cident. No injuries were

The subject was located

civil matter due to the vehi-
cle being shared property.

made contact with a minor
out past curfew. The minor
was transported to their
residence where it was
discovered that the minor
in question had left a tod-
dler alone unsupervised.
The case is open pending
review.
• 6/17/2018 PIA — Offi-
cers were dispatched to a
personal injury accident.
The driver of the offending
vehicle was cited for failure
to yield the right of way.
• 6/17/2018 Traffic — Dur-
ing a traffic stop, officers
made contact with a driver
not carrying a valid drivers
license.

Sunday 6/3/18
• Officers were requested
to respond to a two-vehi-
cle personal damage ac-
cident on U.S. 131 near 3
Mile Road as the Osceola
County Sheriff ’s Dept. was
tied up on a separate call.
No injuries were reported.
Officers cleared once the
sheriff ’s deputies were able
to respond and take over
the scene and the investiga-
tion.
Monday 6/4/18
• Officers were dispatched
regarding a suspicious
smell at an apartment com-
plex. Officers were unable
to locate the source of the
smell.
• Officers were dis-
patched to a local residence
regarding a suspicious sit-
uation. The caller reported
an elderly man walking
around the outside of her
house. She reported he
came to the front and was
just standing there looking
confused. The officer spoke
with the man in question,
who reported that he was
looking for his inside cat
that had gotten out and
crossed the street.
Tuesday 6/5/18
• Officers located and ar-
rested a 26-year-old male
who held an outstanding
felony warrant for bur-
glary out of the 77th Dis-
trict Court. He was then
transported to the Osceola
County Jail where he was
lodged without incident.
• Officers were dispatched
to Spectrum Health Reed
City campus ER, regarding
an elderly male found wan-
dering in the back parking
lot wearing only boxers
and a heavy coat. When
the responding officer ar-
rived, the hospital staff
had brought the 94-year-old
man into the ER room. The
staff reported the man was
confused and admitted to
having dementia. Family
members were identified
and contact made.
• Officers were dispatched
regarding a bag of marijua-
na found on the sidewalk.
When the responding offi-
cer arrived the caller point-
ed to a bag on the ground
he found that he was sure
contained marijuana. The
contents were field tested,
which resulted in a positive
for marijuana. The bag was
then confiscated to be de-
stroyed.
Wednesday 6/6/18
• Officers were dis-
patched to a property dam-
age accident. The 911 caller
reported a vehicle struck
his neighbors mailbox and
drove across the yard and
into the woods. A male sub-
ject was seen leaving the
vehicle on foot. The 37-year-
old male driver was located
and questioned. The man
was issued a citation for
careless driving and his ve-
hicle towed. Marijuana was
also located in the vehicle.
A warrant will be request-
ed.
• Officers were requested
to assist with a male that
was reported to not be act-
ing himself. Officers spoke
with the male who admit-
ted to having some mental
health issues. Officer deter-
mined he was not a harm
to himself or others at that
time and assisted him in
calling family.
• School Liaison Officer
received a complaint re-
garding a suspicious ve-
hicle subject lingering near
the elementary school. The
58-year-old man was locat-
ed and questioned during
which it was learned he
had two outstanding war-
rants. He was then placed
under arrest and transport-
ed to the Osceola County
Jail where he was lodged
without incident. The man
was waiting in the car with
his dog while other family
attended a school function.
• Officer were dispatched
to a possible case of crimi-
nal sexual conduct. The
matter is under investiga-
tion.
• Officers were called to
local apartment regarding
an open door situation. The
woman reported returning
to her apartment and found
the door slightly ajar and
she knew she had locked it
when she left. The matter is
under investigation.
• Officers were notified
of a large dog on the loose.
Unable to catch the dog, of-
ficers were able to locate its
owner and inform them of
the dog’s location. A one-
time warning was issued
for Dog at Large.
• Officers arrested a
31-year-old male on charg-
es of unlawful entry. The
man was transported to the
Osceola County Jail with-
out incident.
• Officers were dispatched
to take a report regarding
an indecent exposure situ-
ation. Officers spoke with
the female, accused of ex-
posing herself through the
window to her neighbors.
The woman denied the in-
cident. The matter is under
investigation.
Friday 6/8/18
• Officers received a
complaint regarding an
indecent exposure situa-
tion. The caller reported
seeing a male defecate in
the front yard within view
of a school bus. The inves-
tigation has been turned
over to the Michigan State
Police for warrant submis-
sion as it took place just in-
side Newaygo County.
• Officer issued a verbal
warning to a teenage ju-
venile for no driver side
rearview mirror and a MIP
tobacco.
• Officers were dispatched
to perform a well-being
check. The caller reported
seeing a post on social me-
dia that indicated a male
subject may be suicidal. Of-
ficers were unable to locate
the man in Reed City area.
It was later determined
he might be in another ju-
risdiction but attempts to
locate had already been ex-
hausted there as well.
• Officers received a re-
port from a local business
that was receiving several
harassing phone calls then
later told they were just
being pranked. The owner
just wanted to report them
and to have them to stop as
they were disrupting busi-
ness.
Saturday 6/9/18
• Officers were requested
to perform a civil standby
for a child exchange. The
child exchange took place
without incident.
Monday 6/11/18
• Officers were dis-
patched to a larceny of gar-
dening items. The matter is
under investigation.
• Officers were dis-
patched to a local apart-
ment complex in reference
to a dispute among tenants
regarding the speed one
tenant was driving in the
parking lot. Officers spoke
to both side and the situa-
tion was resolved.
