We, the undersigned Nevada organizations, ask you to rescind your invitation to
Attorney General Jeff Sessions to speak at your conference in Reno on June 25th.
As you know, Sessions’ policy of separating children from their parents at the border
has been roundly condemned by a chorus of voices, including from all living former First
Ladies, faith leaders across belief communities, pediatric medical associations and civil
rights groups. In addition, more than a dozen governors have announced plans
to withdraw or withhold their states' national guard troops from border service. Seventy-
five former US attorneys from both parties have also condemned Sessions.
Indeed, More than 600 clergy and lay members of the Sessions’ own church are
bringing church charges against Sessions over his policy of separating children
from their parents at the border, even those seeking asylum from violence and
repression in their home countries.
We appreciate that NASRO has a formal chaplain position. Please consider that
the formal accusation charges Sessions with violations of the Methodist
denomination's Book of Discipline, including child abuse, immorality, racial
discrimination and, for his citation of Romans 13 to defend the policy.
You should be aware that past practice has been for authorities at the border to
keep these families together and steer them to immigration courts.
Rolling out the welcome mat to Sessions as your keynote speaker at this
moment would demonstrate your complicity with his actions. Absent a formal
condemnation of Sessions and his policy, it makes NASRO an accomplice in the
internment of children at the border.
We beg of you to reconsider this invitation. Show your members and the world
that you stand on the side of human decency and morality.
