Observation Task 10: Integrated subject areas
Focus: Integration
Procedure:
1. Ask your MST which e.g. maths and/or science concepts the children are learning
at the moment.
2. Find out how she helps them to understand these ideas.
3. Ask about how language is part of this learning. Record the activities and language
used for the math and science concepts on the table below.
4. Get a sample of any documentation of the science or maths curriculum you can
add this to your TP portfolio (ADEC Lesson Plan, teacher’s lesson plan, etc.)
5. Observe a math or science lesson and notice student participation (for reflection).

For example:

Reflection
 What maths or science concept the learners are studying e.g. numbers, addition,
measurement?
 Did the students seem to enjoy the lesson? Why or why not?
 Were students using the new math or science language in English? In Arabic?

An observation of a Math Lesson

The students form the lesson I observed were learning about the “place value” of
the numbers. After reviewing the names of the place values, the teacher asked the
students to create numbers the has the greatest value using different numbers. Then, she
asked them to represent some numbers using the ten-based blocks. Finally, she read a
story about how the Zero got a place value in the kingdom of numbers.

In my opinion, the way the lesson was conducted shows who well planned it was.
The teacher looked very focused and she knew what to do all the team. I liked when she
used different strategies to control her class like: think, pair, and share/ think, pause, and
say. Moreover, I think that the teacher has a strong subject knowledge in math. The way
she was explaining and simplifying when needed shows her ability jump between the
words and that she has a soled vocabulary base.

Even though it was a math lesson, the teacher used many vocabularies that is
related to math but, at the same time can be used in language lessons. Words such as:
greatest, more, less, together, value, before, and after. I think this integration will enrich
the students’ vocabulary and help them in both subjects. Furthermore, the students
seemed very interested and fully focused with the teacher. This can tell us something
about the teacher ability to interact and get their attention. Additionally, the students’
enjoyment has a positive relationship with the effectiveness of the activities that are used
by the teacher.

In conclusion, I think I will benefit from integrating the subject in my teaching

journey. I will try to combine the things that the students should learn in English with
what they learn in math and science. I believe that this will expose them to the context
more in variety lessons. Also, it will make them think about how all the subjects are
related to each other and it is important to be good in English in order to be good in the
other subjects.
