AWS Weld Strength Calculation

Example

Determine the required length (l) of fillet welds as indicated below:

6mm Fillet

P = 50kN

6mm Fillet

Figure 1 Lug welded to plate pulled by a force of 50kN

Given:
Base metal is ASTM A36 Carbon Steel
Yield strength (YS) 250 MPa
Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) 410 MPa
Consumable is 6018 Electrodes

Methodology:
1) Calculate the effective weld area –
length x (2*6mm) x cos 45°
L x (12 x 0.707) = 8.5L
2) Determine minimum allowable stress from code of construction (in this case, AWS
D1.1), which is either - 0.3 x 410 (UTS) = 123 MPa
0.4 x 250 (YS) = 100 MPa
Note: For shear on effective weld area allowable stress, use 0.3 of nominal weld metal UTS but not more
than 0.4 times yield strength of base metal
3) Calculate P/A = 100 MPa (using lower stress)
50000/8.5L = 100 MPa
L = (50000/8.5)/100
∴L = 58.82mm
