Annotated Bibliography Assignment


You have been working to gather appropriate resources for a possible research project you might have in one of your classes at
Kent. For this hypothetical project, you have found 8 possible resources for your research. By now, you should have created
citations for each of your sources in a project you’ve shared with your teacher.

For this worksheet, you will choose what you believe to be the best 4 sources. These five must include at least one book
(electronic or print) from the library, and at least two articles retrieved from library databases. For this annotated
bibliography, alphabetize your source citations by author’s last name, as you would in any citation format. If there is no author,
then the source is added to the alphabetical bibliography by title. Provide a brief defense of why you chose each source.

Please refer to your Annotated Bibliography handout, and the examples provided. For this assignment, please give an example
quote from each source that might reinforce your thesis or a topic sentence in a body paragraph:

 Summarize: What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If
someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say?
 Assess: After summarizing a source, evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your
bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source?
 Reflect: Once you've summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this
source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research
project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?
 Quote/Evidence: What kind of evidence have you found in this source to support your topic? Find at least one relevant
quote (data, etc.) that you would incorporate into a paper. Include the information needed for an MLA in-text citation.

Summarize: Working with rats, researchers of this article were able to reveal the shifting neural circuitry behind the

Assess: The information in Access Science is reliable. From McGrawHill Education, the articles in this site is clear
from where it has referenced its material from and provides brief and concrete evidence for the readers.

Reflect: This article has been helpful in shaping my argument as it shows an example of how differently the brain
works from the traditional way of thinking. Although it is an experiment conducted on rats, it shows the basic
foundation of how it will work in humans.

Assess: Resources from Science Direct are especially reliable considering that all the articles have already been peer-
reviewed by authoritative organizations in the scientific community.

Reflect: This article provides the foundations for my thesis, as it shows that at voxel level the functional brain
network shows robust small-worldness and scale-free characteristics, while its assortativity and rich-club
organization are slightly restricted to the order of behaviors performed.

Summarize: It talks about how the brain’s wiring makes us who we are

Assess: This book is written by a Korean American multi-disciplinary expert whose research efforts have spanned
the fields of neuroscience, physics and bioinformatics. This especially contributes to showing its authority, as fields
such as Neuroscience are ‘multi-disciplinary fields’ that require understanding of various fields, considering that it is
new to the scientific community.

Reflect: This book shows that no neuron is an island in itself. The flow of neural activity through our connectomes
drives our experiences of the present and leaves behind that become our memories of the past. This is the
foundation for my thesis, and it provides the most fundamental information for proving my argument.

4. Chicago Citation: McGaugh, James L. Memory and Emotion: The Making of Lasting
Memories. New York: Columbia University Press, 2003.
Summarize: The author explains why of all memories, those of emotional arousing events tend to be best
remembered, while answering many of the fundamental questions regarding memories and their consolidation,
along with their relationship with the ability to learn.

Assess: James L. McGaugh is the director of the Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory and professor of
neurobiology and behavior at the University of California. Irvine. He was elected to the US National Academy of
Sciences and the American Academy of the Arts and Sciences, as well as the Brazilian and Mexican Academies of
Sciences. This shows his authority on the field.

Reflect: The connectivity between our circuits that dominate our emotions and those that deal with memories show us how
dependent our minds are to other parts of the brain.
