1) Why did you have to leave your country?  
I left my country for different reasons. After being repeatedly arrested, tortured and subjected to interrogations,
the threats and persecutions were expanded to reach my family. I was clearly told either to leave the country or
to face the consequences of my activities, which would directly affect my family.  
The other reason was that I was no longer able to work as a journalist or publish my work. I have wri⸁en more
than six books and thirty articles since 2009, and all of them have been published clandestinely and for free. I
could not support myself financially if I continued to publish my works without censorship and therefore, for
free. That would force me to stop writing and look for another job.

2) What did you do during the two years of ICORNʹs residence in Aahrus?  
I have published various articles in Danish newspapers and magazines on current issues in Iran and Denmark
on Human Rights and cultural issues. I made a sculpture, ʺThe Tree of Hair,ʺ which depicts the history of the
struggle of Iranian women in relation to their right over their bodies. The tree shows 70 strands of royal hair
collected from Iranian women who refuse to wear the hijab in Iran. I also edited an anthology of Iranian avant‑
garde poetry, translated into Danish, to be published in the coming months.

3) How important is ICORN to you?  
By 2015, almost 100 writers and journalists were killed, simply for practicing their fundamental rights to
freedom of expression. Governments around the world are using more innovative, subtle and indirect methods
to censor and silence writers and journalists. The role of ICORN in these obscure days is nothing more than
vital, because ICORN can simply save lives. I remember Elisabeth Dyvik, ICORNʹs program director,
announcing with tremulous voice the death of an Ethiopian writer who was executed in her country while on
the ICORN waiting list. This heart‑breaking fact tells us all about the importance of ICORN.

4) What will you do after residing at ICORN?  
Some friends from the Aarhus municipality suggested that I apply for political asylum in Denmark and did so.
But in the middle of the process, the new right‑wing government took over. Then the Danish Parliament passed
a law known as L87 in January 2016. There is only one law similar to this in history, and this happened during
Nazi Germany. The L87 presents a variety of restrictive measures in order to make Denmark less a⸁ractive to
asylum seekers. The new law allows police to confiscate jewels, money and belongings of refugees to finance
their stay in the country during the assessment process. Then the Danish government tried to limit my right to
freedom of movement, asking me to stay in Denmark during the appraisal process, and I already had legal
residence in Denmark and the right to travel, going out and going whenever I wanted. Finally I left Denmark to
go to the UK in 2016, where I started my doctorate in Human Rights. I also canceled my asylum application in
Denmark simply because I could not convince myself that it would have been necessary to flee Iranʹs fascist
regime to seek asylum under the Nazi regime in Denmark.

Biography 
Omihd Shams Gakieh is a writer, artist, literary critic and journalist freelance Iranian. He holds a
Masterʹs degree in American Studies from the University of Turin, Italy, and has published several
books, including poems, novels and translations of prominent American authors for Farsi, such as

Ginsberg and Bergstein. He has wri⸁en numerous essays on poetry and critical theory, all published3/5

in various literary magazines and online magazines. He was co‑editor of literary magazines,
including Zendeh Rood , Bidaar and Dastoor . After receiving threats and aggression from the Iranian
authorities as a result of his writings and engagement in the human rights situation in Iran, he fled to
Europe. Shams Gakieh arrived safely in Aarhus in April 2014, and continues his writings and works
in his new safe haven.
