Lamb, Edmondson and No
W
hen voters go to the polls
on Tuesday they will likely
see names on the ballot they
have never heard of or seen
or know about.
Republicans will have to decide
which of the 23 people vying for nine
different offices they want. Ten of the
23 are seeking the party’s nomination
for governor.
While we like what Mick Cornett
has done in Oklahoma City, we are
concerned about his commitment to,
and understanding of, rural western
Oklahoma. Our apprehension is based
on us only being aware of him coming
to Clinton one time during the entire
campaign.
If rural Oklahomans feel neglected
during the campaign, what can we
expect once elected?

In contrast, Todd Lamb has visited here
multiple times. In fact, we have seen him
in Clinton more than all of the 14 other
gubernatorial candidates combined.
Since taking office as lieutenant gov-
ernor in 2011, Lamb has been in all 77
counties every year.
We like his commitment to interact
with people from all across the state
– including western Oklahoma. That
goes a long way with us.
Even though there are issues we
don’t agree on, we believe the best way
to work through differences is to have
elected officials who are willing to talk
to the people they represent. Lamb has
demonstrated his willingness to do just
that – and that is why Todd Lamb has

earned our support.
The ballot for Democrats has 12
names on it, but only two wanting the
party’s gubernatorial nomination.
We knew Drew Edmondson when
he was Oklahoma’s attorney general
from 1995 to 2011. During that time we
had the utmost respect for him and
his commitment to open government
meetings and records. Because of
that, he has earned our nod as the top
choice for Democrats.
During a visit to Clinton, Edmondson
emphasized that Democrats must work
with Republicans and vice versa for
our state to move forward. We agree.
We like his common sense approach
to that problem – get the two parties
talking to each other by having get-
togethers at the governor’s mansion
so they can get to know each other. He
said, “If you get to know someone, you
can talk to each other instead of yell-
ing at each other.”
Tuesday’s election will also decide
the “medical marijuana” question. As
previously written, we oppose SQ 788
because we believe legalizing marijua-
na for “medical use” is something that
should be done by the Federal Food
and Drug Administration and not at
the ballot box.
Marijuana may have a place in medi-
cine, but we can’t support it until it is
approved by the Food and Drug Ad-
ministration, the agency responsible
for protecting the public health by
ensuring the safety, effectiveness, and
security of drugs.
