x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 1: Introduction v1.04
OVERVIEW
The x0xi0 kit w/ enclosure adds new features to the top panel and rear panel of the Adafruit x0xb0x, and repalced
the stock plastic enclosure with an aluminum enclosure. This is an advanced project. The kit requires good
soldering skills and a general knowledge of electronics to be able to relate the schematics and board layouts if
troubleshooting is necessary. And most importantly...patience. It will take several hours to complete. If you have built
a x0xb0x you can certainly install the kit. This optional custom x0xb0x PCB's used with this build manual simplify the
wiring of the x0xi0. These are step by step instructions for building the kit, and you will not have to refer to the
schematics. The schematics are only necessary during testing if troubleshooting is necessary. Please do not rush. It
will take many hours to complete the kit. If you are having trouble finishing the kit or find its beyond your abilites
contact me for details on fnishing or reparing your kit. I have a genuine interest in seeing as many of these kits
completed as possible.
The parts-highlighting system used in some places of this document should make it easy to find the correct locations
for all PCB components. Work through each page, installing components listed on each page until all parts are
fitted. Take note of any special instructions and pictures. Any multi-instruction pages should be followed in the order -
Top left, Bottom left, Top right, Bottom right.

TOOLS
(required)
Soldering Iron
De-soldering tool or soldering braid
Solder
Multimeter
Diagonal Cutters / Shears
Wire Stripper (22 - 26 AWG)
#0 & #00 phillips screwdriver
1/16" allen hex driver or wrench
Brush and static-free cloth to clean PCB's
(additional tools)
Oscilloscope
Bench power Supply
PREPARATION
1) A good PCB holder will makes things go a bit easier. It is not compeltely necessary but if you have access to one
it will help.
2) 60/40 .031" Rosin core solder is recommended. 63/37 no clean solder is also ok. Lead free solder is not
recommended.
3) Fitting the PCB's is straight forward but is is highly recommended to follow the steps here. It will take approximately
(14) hours to complete all the PCB assemblies.
4) Connecting the PCB's together and completing the wiring will take approximately (8) hours. There are several steps
that must be completed in specific order; the instructions should be followed in exact order.
5) The testing and calibration procedure will take a few hours as well, obviously more time if troubleshooting is
necessary as is almost always the case.

JUMPER J8, J9
Note! Jumpers J8 & J9 select whether the normally-open conections from the Tip and Ring of the MIX IN jack are lect open or connected to ground.
For normal operation J8 and J9 should be jumpered. In this case both the Tip and Ring of the MIXIN jack are grounded when no cable is plugged in, as the
switched connections are closed (and connected to ground) in this case. The only time you may want to leave the normally-open connection available
(and not groudned) is if you are using the Tip & Ring for inputs or outputs of other modifications and are not using the jack for MIX IN.

10uF or 0.33uF C412 (see below)
6.8uF or 4.7uF C415 (see below)
Note! The value of C412 has changed as of May 2012. Kits shipped prior to May 2012 include a 10uF electrolytic capacitor.
Kits shipped on or after May 2012 include a 0.33uF capacitor.
The change was made to increase the high-pass roll-off frequency of the noise generator. This was done to decrease the possibility of
audible bleed-through from the noise generator when the Level controls are set to lower settings or when the cutoff frequency is set very low.
Note! The value of C415 has change as of January 2012. The value was changed from 6.8uF to 4.7uF. This capacitor is the timing cap for the
new envelope generator. I decided it was more useful to shorten the min/max attack/decay time and give more resolution for faster settings.

Jumper
The latest improvement calls for a jumper wire to be installed. The wire goes from D409(-) to the via next to IC405 Pin 1 as shown.
Any type of wire can be used, wire wrap or light gauge solid wire is probably easiest, although 24-28AWG stranded wire can also be used,
such as the wire that is included with the kit.
Note! Kits shipped after May 2012 may have this wire already installed.
Q409 & Q410 are not used. They should be left empty or clipped out if already installed.

Note! The potentiometers need to be fitted carefully. Before soldering them in completely test fit the top panel to verify that they are seated firmly,
that they are straight, and that they don't rub against the cutouts in the panel. It's best to take time and double check now rather than later.
You may want to double check the fit of the top panel multiple times as you proceed!

Switch
Note! SW413 needs to be modified before mounting. The short legs should be cut off the bottom of the switch.
In most cases this is done already before the kit was shipped out. This needs to be done because this switch is the highest part on the x0xi0 Top PCB,
slightly higher than the slide switches, and should be trimmed for the top panel to fit best.

These two PCB's will be sandwiched together with 3/32" gap between them. To allow for clearance all the leads must be trimmed short. This
includes all elads from all resistors, capacaitors, potenetiometers, switches, etc.
Start with a clean PCB and be patient here, it'll take some time. The next two pages show close up pictures of how each PCB should look.
The best cutters to use are standard electrnoics shears. A relatively inexpensive pair such as the Plato Model 170 or 170LX are excellent.
There is no need for expesive shears.
Note! Note! Note! This step is the single most cause of problems for x0xi0's that come in for service. The leads must be trimmed for the PCB's
to mount correctly, and the boards should be kept clean. If the leads are not trimmed, the stress from the boards being mounted together can
cause problems. Also, in several cases I have found the leads poking through the mylar insulator casuing a short!

a) Cut potentiomer shafts if not done already. VR2,VR3,VR5,VR7, & VR8 should be cut to the same height as VR4/VR6.
Note! Do not cut the shaft of Encoder S2, it is already the correct length.
b) Cut the Encoder shafts for S3 & S4. They should be cut where the flat part of the shaft begins. This will only leave a small length of shaft to
attach to. This is ok. Be careful, it is not just ABS plastic, it's reinforced w/ fiberglass so it's hard and will tend to shatter when cut. Before
cutting mark position 1 so you will know where it is after the shaft is cut.
After cutting it helps to use a dremel tool with sandingn bit to smooth out the edges, although
c) After cutting it may help use a dremel tool with sanding bit to smooth out the edge. This sometimes helps to get a perfect and level fit for the
knob.

x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 8: Mainboard Rev2 Errors v1.04
Some of the latest Rev2 custom x0xb0x mainboard have fabrication errors that must be fixed.
You can tell if you have a Rev2 mainboard by looking at the revision number in the lower right hand corner
There are three errors including two ground plane connections and one via that are missing.
The areas of concern are highlighted in the picture below:
Page 71
x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 8: Mainboard Rev2 Errors v1.04
There is a missing ground plane connection to the collector of Q9. To connect this pin to ground use a piece of
wire and connect the the ground point shown.
Page 72
x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 8: Mainboard Rev2 Errors v1.04
Note! This pic shows an unpolulated mainboard. Your mainboard will be populated already but the wire goes where shown.
Make sure the soldering is neat and not to leave too big of a solder blob as the x0xi0 Top PCB will sandwich to this PCB later.
Page 73
x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Standard Enclosure Section 8: Mainboard Rev2 Errors v1.04
There is a missing via that connects pin 8 of IC11 to the (+) supply on the mainboard (Pin 9). The trace from pin 8
of IC11 ends and there is no hole (via) to connect it to the trace on the other side of the PCB. To connect this pin
to the (+) supply use a piece of wire and connect it to Pad 9 pn the mainboard as shown.
Page 74

Temporarily jumper the power supply switch connections (PWR) so that the I/O Board can be powered up to test the
power supply voltages:
Plug in the power adapter and test the supply voltages. For the ground connection hook the test lead to any pad C.
Voltages should be as indicated below (+/- 0.15V):
Pad D = 12V
Pad N = 6V
J3 Pin 3 & 4 = 5V

Connect J4 between the I/O Board and Mainboard as shown. Wire lengths should be 8-10" (250mm).
J4-2 on the Mainboard should connect to one of the pad C's (ground) on the I/O Board as shown.
This is the connection of the main 5.33V/12V analog supply. Use wire colors as shown if possible.
Note! If a 0.1" spacing 3-pin connecter is available it can be used on the mainboard side.

The are many types of black flat head screws included in the kit for assembling the enclsoure. Also, depending on how old your kit is the type
of screws has changed. Below the various black flat head screws will be described and the locations where they go will be covered. The
enclosure will be assembled in a later section, but this overview is presented here to avoid confusion as the screws start to be used.
First run x0xi0 Custom Enclosure kits include a combination of phillips and socket head screws. In general, the phillips head screws are used
for everything except the top surface of the enclosure.
a) The first parts that we can isolate from the screw packet are the M3 size metric screws. These screws are used to attach the (3) L-Brackets
during enclsoure assembly. These are both phillips head and socket head M3 size screws in the kit. They are included in the small screw
packet. There are (2) socket head type and (4) phillips head type. The socket type are used to connect the L-Brackets to the top panel, and the
phillips style are used to connect the l-brackets to the front and rear panel. These screws are 6mm long.
(The socket head ones may or may not have the writing on the screw head as shown below).

b) The screws that are used to attach the ends of the front and rear panels are phillips head screws. These are 5/16" long and can also be
found in the screw packet. There is a quantity of (8).

d) The screws that are used to attach the x0xi0 I/O PCB to the bottom panel are 1/2" phillips 4-40 screws. There is a quantity of (3) of these.
Also, the two screws used to fill the unused holes are either 3/8" or 1/2" phillips 4-40 screws.
Second run x0xi0 Custom Enclosure kits use all socket head screws (Note! There are one or two kits during the transition to the second run
that may stil have some phillips head screws to be used for mounting the x0xi0 I/O PCB to the bottom panel).

c) The screws that are used to attach the x0xi0 I/O PCB to the bottom panels are 1/2" socket head 4-40 screws.
Note! There are a couple kits that were shipped during the transition to the 2nd run that still have phillips head screws included for these two.
Page 141

Note! As described in Step 2 there are two versions of bottom panels. The first run as shown below has more holes to accommodate more
screws. The second run has less holes as it was determined all the screws weren't necessary.
a) If you have a first run bottom panel the two holes towards the front of the panel labeled NOT USED should be filled using two screws as
shown in Step 2. To secure the screws use (2) lock washers as shown in the pic below.
b) Apply the mylar insulator to the bottom panel. It goes underneath the I/O Board so make sure it goes right up to the far edge of the panel.
The kit may include two smaller pieces to be used side by side.
c) Install the front L-bracket wiht a 3mm screws (if you have a first run kit as described in Step 2 use an M3 phillips head screw here).
d) Insert the three longer 1/2" screws through the bottom panel and place on the plastic washers as shown.

a) Attach the four toggle swithes. Place one or two of the washers on the inside of the switch. Align the switches with the slot facing upwards.
b) Attach the two potentiometers. The 50KA goes on the left, the 10KB goes on the right (as viewed in the picture below). It is important to align
them as well as possible. Clearance with the underside of the Mainboard is tight.
Page 144
x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 17: Misc v1.04
c) The metal tabs and stading tabs on the top side of the two potentiometers need to be pushed down as shown. This is to allow for the
maximum clearance with the bottom side of the mainboard.
Page 145
x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 17: Misc v1.04
d) After bending the metal tabs place a flap of the mylar insulator as shown.
Do not skip this step! The mylar insulator must be placed or the body of the potentiometer can short the pins on the x0xi0 top PCB during
final assembly into the enclosure (see Step 4 on next page).
Page 146
x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 17: Misc v1.04
Do not skip this step! The pins for the connections shown below should be trimmed as short as possible to avoid contact with the two
potentiometers on the rear panel (when mainboard is installed).
Page 147

Many tests have already been completed. Some of these tests will be repeated. Also the remaining test will be completed before
assembling the enclosure.

VCF Out
Before testing the filter output you need to connect the 8" red wire that was left unconnected from Step 9(q) of section 14. Note! Pad
T is already connected to pad S on the mainboard via the pinhead so solder the wire on top as shown.

Standoffs
The top stand-offs are Female-Female types. The bottom two are Male-Female type.
Page 161
x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 19: Calibration & Final v1.04
Standoffs (cont)
The bottom side has stand-offs at the lower left and lower-right front sides. The 3/8" stand-offs are male-female types so they can be joined with the 1"
stand-offs.
Page 162

Standoffs (cont)
Add a washer underneath the standoff on each side as shown in the picture below. This is to get correct height.
Attach bottom left and bottom right stand-offs to bottom panel using the shorter 1/4" black flat head screws.
Note! The more recent kits shipped in 2012 and after include only socket head screws in the 1/4" lenght size. In this case the screws for connecting the
standoffs to the bottom panel should use the 1/4" flat head socket types. However, if using a kit from prior to 2012 there will be some 1/4" phillips flat
head screws included. In these cases these screws are used for these connections to the standoffs from the bottom, and socket head screws are only
used for connecting the top panel.

Organize Wires
a) There is no single way to properly organize the wires inside the kit but they should be organized so that they don't get pinched or twisted.
Also it is a good idea to dress wires away from the power supply heat sinks.
b) The wires from the x0xi0 I/O Board to the jacks on the Rear Panel should be tied together and run along the right side of the
enclosure to keep them out of the way and organized. There should be plenty of wire lenghts if the instructions followed during wiring.
c) The wires from J3 for the microcontroller can be run along the left ide of the enclosure. If the wires lengths that were recommended during
assembly were used there will be enough length.
a) Attach L-brackets to the top and bottom of the top panel using the M3 screws as described in Step 2 of Section 16.
b) Place the top panel and secure with the proper screws as described in Step 2 of Section 16.
Note! The panel was test fitted before the switch caps were glued on. Be patient when placing the panel and pay special attention to re-
directing any switch caps the are in the way
d) Secure to the rear panel by screwing in the L-braket using the appropriate M3 screws.
Page 166

Screw on the side panels to the rear panel using the proper screws as described in Step 2 of Section 16.
Page 168
x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 19: Calibration & Final v1.04
Before screwing on the front panel, stick on the rubber feet and test the unit on a flat surface. Make sure that the unit sits flat and level while
installing the front panel.
Note! The middle holes in the front panel are not the same distance from the corresponding outer edge. It's hard to tell, but the distance
of the top center hold is slightly farther from the edge of the panel. Try the panel both ways or measure before installing.
Collet Knobs
a) The two collet knobs go on the 16-position encoders. Before placing the collar over the shaft take note of the shaft position.
b) Install the collars and rotate around to make sure they fit well.
Page 169
x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 19: Calibration & Final v1.04
c) place the knob over the collar, with the line facing straight up at 12 o'clock
d) Next, place the washer and then the nut. Hold the pointer at 12 o'clock while tightening the nut.
e) lastly, snap the cap on the knob.
Note! If the cap needs to be removed it is easiest to use a very small flathead screwdriver and pry it off from underneath. The knob is soft and
will not get damaged.
Rear Knobs
The two knobs for the rear panel controls are different than the rest. You may need to further modify the potentiometer shafts to get the knobs
to fit flush.
The remaining eight knobs are for the rest of the top panel controls. Five of them have been drilled out on the underside. These ones are for
Tune, Cutoff, Env Mod, Accent, and Volume.
Page 170
x0xi0 Build Manual for Custom PCB's & Custom Enclosure Section 19: Calibration & Final v1.04
VCO Calibration
Note! Before calibrating VCO's all other calibrations must be completed first.
The VCO's are calibrated from the top panel. The adjustments for tune & width for each VCO is as shown in the pic:
Calibrating VCO1
Note! In general for VCO1, the Width trimmer will be adjusted about 1/8th of a full turn clockwise. The Tune trimer will be adjusted about
1/10th of a full turn clockwise. This is very consistent from unit to unit.
Calibrating VCO2
Note! In general for VCO2, the Width trimmer will be adjusted about 1/10th of a full turn clockwise. The Tune trimer will be adjusted about
1/8th of a full turn counterclockwise. This is very consistent from unit to unit.
g) When VCO2 is completed, turn up both oscillators and verify that VCO2 is tuned one octave below VCO1 by listening. If they're beating
slightly adjust the VCO2 CENTS control until they are perfectly in tune. Lastly, play notes from C2 down to C1 while listening to make sure the
two VCO's are tracking perfectly with each other.
