The discussion of the Question of Radical
Climate Change Action sparked some
debate towards the first amendment
on “goals to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions to contribute to global carbon
emissions by 2050”.
Lebanon feels that this was a “good
deadline” whereas Tonga, China and
New Zealand had differing opinions
towards this goal. China perceived the
goal as “vague” with New Zealand stating
that “this is not a reasonable time frame
as we have been ignoring this issue
for ages.” believing it would not make
significant change.
Tonga strongly disagreed against
the amendment as they found that
“extending the deadline, meets nothing”
where ultimately they found that the
Pacific Islands would be nonexistent
resulted from this proposed deadline if
taken into effect.
The Paris Agreement is a testament
towards the commitment of India
towards its goals to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions. A comment from Kuwait
was made to the Hindustan Times
whereby this goal could be seen as
“ambitious at first glance, yet closer
analysis would reveal them to be entirely
achievable, especially for a state with
foresight and stability to implement the
necessary policy actions”.
This cements the idea of how India could
benefit from this opportunity of this goal
and to accelerate the emergence of its
influential economy.

Kuwait and Lebanon believed that the
deadline of reducing carbon emissions
was a step in the right direction, with
Kuwait stating that “it would help the
resolution and reduce emissions as
a whole and encourage developing
countries to pursue this goal.”
While the Indian representative was not
present at the climate change action
debate, the current administration has
shown a clear stance towards change
as seen with its commitment towards
ratifying the Paris Agreement.
