Introduction

This document has been compiled to help departments implement the 2017 Pearson Edexcel
AS and A level Further Mathematics specifications. A range of possible approaches to planning
the course are provided, these are suggestions only and none are intended to be prescriptive
(there are many teaching approaches and we are only listing a selection here). There are also
separate schemes of work available to aid the delivery of the content. Those can be found on
our website here.

Assessment structure
From 2017, AS Further Mathematics will be a standalone qualification: results from the AS
cannot contribute towards an A level. The content of AS equates to half of an A level, but the
assessment will be at a similar standard to the current AS (and at a different standard from A
level). Both AS and A level qualifications will have linear assessment meaning that all
examinations will be taken at the end of the course.

This de-coupling of AS from A level and the move from modular to linear assessment have
implications for planning and delivery which are considered in this course planner. It will be
for centres to decide which approach is the most suitable for their staff and students.

Course Planners

Models of delivery below offer different approaches to structuring the further maths course.
Since the structure will depend on decisions made by the department with regards to AS and A
level, as well as on how the course itself will be delivered (whether pure content will be taught
alongside applied or before), below different delivery options are outlined.

The following assumptions apply to all course planners and to the separate topic specific
schemes of work:

 We have assumed 39 teaching weeks in each year, indicated where revision is necessary
and taken account of any examination time. Although in practice term lengths vary, we
have assumed autumn term to be 15 weeks and spring and summer terms to be 12 weeks
each.
 Guided learning hours included in schemes of work assume delivery of AS Further
Mathematics to take 180 hours and A level Further Mathematics to take 360 hours.
Since the ratio of pure to applied content is 1:1, the number of hours needed to deliver
AS Further Mathematics core pure content to 90 hours and applied to 90 hours (45 for
one option and 45 for second option). To deliver the whole A level Further Mathematics
course, 180 hours should be spent on core pure and 180 on optional content (90 for
option 1 and 90 for option 2)*.

*Please see Appendix A for more detailed breakdown of guided learning hours

Consecutive delivery

Consecutive delivery refers to further maths being taught after maths.

You will find below different delivery models which you can fully adapt to your department’s
needs.

The advantages and disadvantages of this model of delivery, which you should consider when
completing your planning, are as follows.

Advantages:

 all content in maths is completed before starting further maths therefore any prior
knowledge needed in further maths from maths stops causing issues when delivering
the course in consecutive order;
 the order of delivery can be structured to suit departments needs since the only prior
knowledge to be weary of is within maths and within further maths;
 students take all maths exams in year 12 and all further maths exams in year 13 reducing
the burden of assessment.

Disadvantages:

 some HE courses require students to take all their A levels in the same session;
 some paid for resources are designed to support a two year delivery model so for
delivery in a year books for year one and year two will need to be purchased.

Delivery option 1: AS level Further Mathematics only
This delivery option assumes only AS Further Mathematics will be offered over a year
following AS Mathematics and can be delivered in following ways by teaching:

 core pure mathematics taught alongside both options(Course planner models 1.1);
 core pure mathematics taught alongside each option at the time (Course planner models
2.1);
 a mixture of above.

Parallel delivery

Parallel delivery refers to further maths and maths both being taught together at the same time.

You will find below different delivery models which you can fully adapt to your department’s
needs.

The advantages and disadvantages of that model of delivery, which you should consider when
completing your planning, are as follows.

Advantages:

 The entry requirements of some HE courses demands for students to take all their A
levels in the same session;
 most paid for resources are designed to support a two year delivery model.

Disadvantages:

 there are some prior knowledge topics from A level Mathematics which are required in
order to access materials in AS Further Mathematics;
 students take all maths and all further maths exams in year 13.

Tables which follow include the content of AS and A level Mathematics needed in order to
successfully deliver different components of AS and A level Further Mathematics. We have
endeavoured to order the content of both maths and further maths to minimalise the amount of
prior knowledge needed but it was not possible to do so without some left in different parts to
be taught prior to starting further maths content.
