www.itsc.uoit.ca
You’ve never experienced education like this before. UOIT’s
national award-winning laptop learning environment and
wireless campus allows you to connect with your professors
and peers – putting you one step ahead come graduation.
UOIT is a leader among North American universities in
implementing and using course- and industry-specific software
for laptop learning. You will receive a high-end laptop at the
beginning of your studies and your professors will develop
sophisticated course content using a powerful campus-wide
online learning management system.
One of the greatest advantages of UOIT’s laptop-based
learning environment is that all students have equal access
to the same technology, resources and services.
Inside or outside of the classroom, you can make quality
computer-based presentations, conduct Internet research,
work electronically on your own or with other students and
have seamless access to all online resources. You can also
conveniently download your class notes directly to your
laptop. An annual mobile-computing fee covers the use of

your hardware learning tools, extensive technical support,
virus protection, high-speed Internet, printing services,
insurance and a wide range of program-specific software. In
addition, all laptops are refreshed with appropriate software
each year and upgraded every two years. We’re committed

vibrant CAMPUS LIFE

Your university experience is about more than just the
challenges you face in the classroom. From your first day on
campus, and even before, you’ll find activities and opportunities
to get involved that reflect your own unique interests.
A variety of fun activities and informative sessions are
planned to welcome you to campus and assist you with the
transition to university. In addition, the Student Experience
Centre offers a comprehensive first-year student orientation
program throughout the academic year.
Many students get connected through dozens of campus
clubs, including groups that relate to your program of study
such as the Game Development club and the Pre-medical
Society. Other students may pursue a popular interest or
topic like the Poet’s Club, while organizations such as the
Karuna Environmental Movement and the Meal Exchange
work toward a better world by advocating and helping to
address key social issues.
E.P. Taylor’s, one of UOIT’s campus pubs, is located in the
Student Centre and is a popular spot to catch a regular lineup
26
of great entertainment for all ages, including comedy at
lunch and Campus Idol. It even merited mention from the
Harvard Crimson, online edition. “To realize the potential of
an on-campus pub at Harvard, one need only look at places
like E.P. Taylor’s at UOIT,” wrote the Crimson. “With comedy
shows every Monday, pub nights every Wednesday, and huge
all-campus events Friday and Saturday, the establishment is
everything any student could wish for.”
If your interests run more towards the political arena, you
may want to consider the student association (Your SA),
which works hard to serve the needs of all students. If
you’re more the happy host, our UOIT Ambassador program
could be just your thing. UOIT ambassadors are proactive
leaders who introduce prospective students and their families
to the UOIT community by leading campus tours and
providing a current student’s perspective.
We also offer student life programs, which promote intellectual
and personal growth by connecting you to existing campus
opportunities and assisting with the development of new
initiatives. Staff works with Your SA, the Student Centre,
residences, student clubs, academic units and all student
services to enhance your student satisfaction.

You will find UOIT’s campus life is wonderfully enriched by a
diverse student body. Each year, hundreds of students from
more than 65 countries are choosing UOIT as their post-
secondary studies destination. Students from around the
world are drawn to UOIT because of our real-world mix of the
theoretical and practical, and our safe, friendly environment.
Our diverse campus community offers wonderful opportunities
to share ideas with people from a wide range of backgrounds
and cultures. International students are also encouraged to
participate in fun social events throughout the year such as
high tea with the president, holiday celebrations and interesting
and unique field trip experiences.

www.uoit.ca/transit
Located in Oshawa, Ontario, our campus is easy to get to
from all points in the GTA and beyond, whether you decide
to get here by car or by bus. And, thanks to newly expanded
transit routes and the U-Pass, which provides you with
unlimited access during the academic year to Durham
Region Transit (DRT) and GO Transit bus service in Durham
Region, getting here has never been easier or more
affordable. More good news – as a UOIT student, you pay
a reduced fee for GO Transit bus service to and from the
campus from locations outside of the region, such as
Scarborough, North York and Markham.
And, that’s not all. If you want to travel between the north

LOOK AT US GROW
As one of Canada's youngest and most dynamic universities,
UOIT is rapidly growing in reputation and in enrolment at the
undergraduate and graduate levels. To address that growth
and ensure our students continue to have access to an
outstanding learning environment, UOIT has established a
downtown Oshawa campus and added new classrooms,
labs, study areas and state-of-the-art learning facilities on
our north Oshawa campus.
In late 2010, the General Motors of Canada Automotive
Centre of Excellence (ACE) will open at our north Oshawa
campus, providing faculty, staff, students and industry
partners with access to what will be the first commercial
automotive research, development and innovation centre of
its kind in the world. Among its many design and testing
features, the 16,300-square-metre (175,460-square-foot)
centre will be home to a climatic wind tunnel with extreme
weather capabilities.
Another exciting project now under construction is the new
General Motors of Canada Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) Energy Research Centre (ERC), a 9,290-square-metre
32 (100,000-square-foot) training and research facility, scheduled
to open in 2011. The ERC will serve as the premier training
ground for future energy scientists and nuclear engineers
while enabling leading-edge research in the development of
clean and green energy and technology.

UOIT has also taken a step back in time reopening the

Regent Theatre, a historic landmark in downtown Oshawa.
The university took ownership of the theatre in November
2009 and immediately began assessing what refurbishment
and renovation work was needed to restore the theatre to its
former glory. As a student you will enjoy the Regent as a
large lecture theatre and for community and cultural events
during the evenings and on weekends throughout the year.
In addition, our Faculty of Social Science and Humanities
has recently joined the Faculty of Education at our expanding
downtown Oshawa campus. If you are a student studying
within this faculty, you will study in a new 2,790-square-metre
(30,000-square-foot), five-storey building at 55 Bond Street,
which is located immediately to the north of the historic
Regent Theatre, as well as at the refurbished former Alger
Press building at 61 Charles Street.
These are exciting times for UOIT and we look forward to
sharing them with you.

invest FINANCING YOUR EDUCATION

Because your education is one of the most important
investments you’ll ever make, our Student Awards and
Financial Aid (SAFA) office works hard to ensure you have
everything you need to meet your financial obligations. We
are committed to helping you with the financial aspect of
your post-secondary experience and encourage you to take
advantage of the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP),
budget counselling and on-campus and summer employment
opportunities to help offset the cost of your tuition, books
and other fees. We offer a variety of scholarship awards and
bursaries to help you meet the cost of a university education.
In addition, thanks to the generosity of donors, there are a
variety of other student awards available if you are in financial
need and in good academic standing.
OSAP and the Canada Student Loans program provide financial
assistance for those who qualify. For more information about
government loan programs, please visit osap.gov.on.ca.
